This is excellent news but they spelled it "Columbia"....

Colombia is experiencing a much speedier image recovery than I ever dreamed was possible. I remember a couple of years back NG published a real sour (yet sobering) article on Medellin, how times change.

Yeah, things are looking up, but would you pay over $4000? Not I!

That article was not well-received. I know several people in Medellin who were outraged and wrote to the national geographic about that terrible march 2005 article. Uribe wrote to them as did the alcalde of medellin. Ironically this was after the Bloque Nutibarra Cacique demobilized, and homicide rates had been plummetting, so the article, given that, was even more disingenuous.

Disingeneuous and very outdated.

Nueva York Bombero - I don't think $4,000 is that steep for a 22 day tour... I mean, I find this is pretty much in line with the prices for similar Costa Rican ecotours...

For people not interested in doing research and viewing maps, I guess it's good. I find planning trips/ itineraries/ etc. part of the fun.
I'll be in many parts of Colombia in 2 weeks and I'm staying longer than 22 days.
$4000 is not the price tag for me.....

It seems ecotour´s upcoming tour is for five days at a (their?) reserva near Santa Marta including one day birding in Bogotá. It includes a 3 hour horseback hump to a rustic cabin and costs a whopping $4300. Geemanee that´s steep! I wonder, do the reservas shown on their google earth page belong to them or do they just arrange access. They show a lot of reservas I´d like to get to but not for $8´000.000 pesos plus per pop.

Sorry if it's not very clear. EcoTurs arranges visits to the reseres of ProAves and it costs between 55 and 85 dollars a day full board at the reserves (less for Colombian nationals and researchers).
The typical PBH reader will arrange their own transport, and maybe ask for a guide from the local communities to be arranged. The tours that cost around $200 a day are specialist tours with top-level guides and a driver/internal flights etc. They're not intended for the average PBH reader, but hopefully people will be pleased to see that Colombia is starting to attract this sort of tourist as well.

Good clarification getting better. And I think it is great news also. (except for all of the 55 year old, bird-watchin' hippy gringos that will be in Colombia) jajajaja

The one thing gringos know about other gringos, is that they sure know how to fuck up a good thing once they discover it.

It's the "way of the gringo."
