PBH / colombia (travelguide, pictures) / post

My step children apparently need to read more PBH

I think my step kids should read PBH more. They got on a plane this morning for a 5 week visit to Colombia and you'd think that they had been sentenced to a 5 year stay in a Siberian gulag. Talk about a depressed group! Originally their mother thought they should spend 8 weeks there and they negotiated her down to 5 weeks but right up until the end, they were like prisoners on Death Row waiting for a call from the governor. I felt like telling them, Geez, you guys are Colombians! You should be happy you're going home and will be able to see your grandmother, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.

Every other Colombian in the US is sucking on the economic teat for all it's worth while moaning nonstop about life here. Meanwhile, these guys love it here and they don't even want to go back for a visit to Colombia. What's up with that? Heck they were even giving the lame excuse that they would forget their English if they went back to visit Colombia. I've concluded that they need to read more PBH where they can learn how lucky they are to be going back to Colombia and how horrible life is here in the US for Colombians. Looks like I've screwed up big-time!

Never underestimate the guilt-trip dammnit I just wrote a huge long response it timed out on me.

I am like Desi's kids. The only reason I went to colombia last time was that my mother paid for it and I was so broke and desperate for a break from life that I would have gone anywhere. Why? well visiting Colombia isn't exactly fun. It involves wearing uncomfortable shoes, being on display, being grilled on every personal aspect of my life under the sun, and beng passed off like a relay baton from family-member to family member. It is also very uncomfortable becuase I am invariably confronted with parts of the culture that I dislike a great deal, and no one living there gets it.

The reason why I am going on my next trip is that my favouriote aunt is getting very old and will likely not last many more years. I also do want to give my cousins a chance. We haven't spent much time together since childhood and I am curious to see what this new generation is like. I also realised that colombia is very close to some amazing places like Machu Pichu and the Amazon. Places that I can visit for my own pleasure and enjoy on my own or with other international travellers.

UTC it is extremely importantn that your step kids have fun seeing things aside from their relatives. Capture their imagination. Make sure they go to places like Cartagena, (whisper Pirates of the Carribean in their ear) Cartagena was the real-thing (sort of). If the kids get stuck at home with cheek-pinching relatives they will grow up like me and have great trouble going to colombia.

Desideria (Moderator) says on Jun 7, 2005, 12:41:

good advice, adri I think the main reason my kids don't want to go to Colombia is that every time they have been there they have been couped up in grandpa's house with grandma clucking like an old hen around them (she liked to show them off as trophies to her snotty friends...blonde, blue-eyed, white-skinned children ...mis nietos:))). On later trips, they didn't get to go anywhere because it was always "too dangerous" to show your face outside the house, especially if not guarded, chaperoned and escorted by some older relatives.

My daughter managed to get herself a Caleño boyfriend on the same night of her 15-year-old party and I did have some hopes that maybe she'd be more interested in Colombia after that. No dice, we stayed for two months and the youngsters spent all their free time in each other's company, supervised of course, by either me or the boy's mom. God they were cute together! As soon as we got back to Stockholm she started seeing all her old friends here again and forgot this cute Caleño very soon.

My son won't go to Colombia because he likes to clubbing and move freely around the town (like most young men do)and he feels that he wouldn't be safe there. He doesn't think they play his kind of music (don't ask me ) and that he doesn't really have much anything in common with Caleños in his age group.

I am trying to get them to go and stay a couple of weeks at least (maybe longer) when I'm there myself and they don't have to stay with their uncles or cousins. That was the main reason for taking over the house in Cali, converting it to a B&B and having always a place for myself and my kids to go to and stay, a place of their own.

I'm planning to take them to Cartagena and Bogotá at least, besides Cali. Probably an Avianca airpass for three or four cities would do the trick...they have never been anywhere except in Cali.

Cheers,
Desi

UC didn't want to go??? that's nuts! How long have they been in the US, a little over a year or so? I don't remember... They don't know how lucky they are. Plus being able to travel like that too, shoot. How many people really get that kind of chance to do that. That goes for just about anyone. I was born in Europe and have traveled all my life. I have reletives that have barely traveled out of their state for a vacation.

They may have a different outlook on things when they get back. They may change their minds and want to stay (I know I would). My wife and step-daughter are looking forward to coming to the US and getting to visit all kinds of places here.

BTW, enjoy the quietness with your wife.

Age I think age has a lot to do with it. My nephews here in Bogota hate going to see their cousins in Houston and Boston as they find those places boring. Everytime they go they can not see the moment to come back. I think they simply miss their friends, their way of doing things, their freedom of knowing the place, knowing what to do and where to go. They like going for like a week at the most, going to amusement parks and back. My niece hates shopping and she always complains that her American cousins only like going to the mall, again and again.

"Moaning nonstop about life here" Well there are some Colombians that are moaning about life here. But I think they are few and far between. They are not prisoners here either. Their passoport, both American or Colombian will allow them to return to Colombia. I would not even want to speculate about how many more Colombians seek a life here versus Americans who seek a life in Colombia. Although you would not believe that is the case from reading the space cadets stories on this web site.

These kids may not be so stupid after all. Seeing the uncles and cousins versus all the other important stuff that a wealthy guy like yourself as to offer them in beautiful Texas. And their friends, and the games,,,,and who knows what else. Look UTC, a vacation lasts a week or two...three on the outside. Anything more than that is excess. It's too much. Time to come home

I think the only person who is really upset about them only being gone only 5 weeks is YOU!!! I would rather have 8 weeks of peace and quiet than 5. Are you doing a form of blame shifting. Look Utc, enjoy the quiet, the wife being away, and all that. Go for broke. Have a great time and forget about the wife and kids. Who knows, maybe you get to love the solitude so much, you will not want them ever to come home?

By the way, they will give the paisitas a run for their money.

Those are the Mexicans you never see in San Antonio or Chicago either for that matter. To this day Mexico does not realize some of the benefits it has incurred from the occupation of the French and Maximillian.

My opinion changed once I had the oppotunity to assist a US cheerleader with her German lessons during one vacation ... the additional lesson I learned is that vacation adventures are a great pasttime. Once old enough to drive (18 in Germany) I traveled Europe extensively ... I must have gypsy blood in me.

They don't like beaches or sports but would be fascinated by Cartagena's Old Town, Bogotá's museums and art exhibits, colonial towns like Villa de Leyva and of course, the magnificent scenery of the mountains. I doubt that I could get them go to the Amazon because my son-in-law is scared of snakes.

I'd also like to take them to San Agustin and Tierradentro, but it might not be a good idea since they would definitely feel aprehensive about the guerrillas and the outside chance of being kidnapped. It's all these limitations to moving around freely and going out unescorted that are stopping them. Besides, they feel that I've been nagging them to death about the necessity of going back and will not go to Colombia just because.
