My friend's Colombian wife in the USA

One of my friends got married to a Colombian girl in May 2007. She is 27 and he is 55 years old. She came to the USA in August 2007 on a student visa. I was not surprised that they broke up last month. However I was shocked at the reason. This girl really loves him, the age diiference was not a problem. They broke up because she had a difficult time adjusting to the American culture. She complained about his long hours working and exercising. She also discovered that she was not "white". They faced a great deal of age and racial discrimination. It is sad that many places in America had a problem with them being a couple. Maybe he would have been better living in Miami.

She didn't want to look like a bad person. So she did what any colombiana does when she's doing something selfish - she justifies it with every unselfish excuse she can conjure.

This chica has just picked out the stereotypical reasons why she feels couples break up in the US and are using them to justify her breaking up with him.

"Darling, I really really LOVE you but you're just working TOO hard to support us and you're keeping yourself in shape for me is driving us apart."

As for the racial discrimination mierde, nowadays, one in 9 americans are now of African American descent, plus there is a huge population of latinos, indians, pakistanis, etc etc etc.......inter-racial marriages don't even raise an eye brow anymore.

She probably just stole that excuse from a telenovela.

She's not a saint, she's just selfish and self-absorbed. He's better off.

Let some other poor schmuck deal with her.

People have pretty good instincts, generally speaking, and most know deep down if they are headed for trouble relationship-wise. Very few "victims" would ever admit to that. But I think it is true.

My friends in Toronto who like it best are the ones who achieve succes by learning the language and being proficient at it, staying there long enough to build solid friends/work opportunities and finally (and for some, hopefully) getting residency and later citizenship. RJ-I would think so! No surprise the Breakup Rate would be much higher in a marriage where Two People don't share a common langauge/culture. How can they communicate? Even in the USA where 2 people share the same langauge, the Divorce rate is probably 6-7 out of 10 in this day&Age! . That said, What do you think the % of breakups is between these couples who don't share a common langauge or culture? I agree with Rubito that most colombian immigrants head to the US or Canada for economic reasons ($$$$). Many don't fare so well, but many do. Let's face it. Colombia is a beautiful country but the main reason for the outflow is that professionals there are not making enough money. You have tons of supereducated colombians between the mid 20's and late 40's just leaving Colombia because the professional salaries in Colombia are pathetic. . We never really left colombia because we didn't love our homeland or because we'd rather be up here freezing our puchecas. To be honest, I had a very decent existence back home. We never really thought this was paradise, it's just a matter of what is more convenient for you at the moment, where you have opportunities ($$$$), a couple of family connections and the freedom to set up a business if you have half a brain.

If the salaries went up and more opportunities became available in colombia, you would have quite a few people going back.

Hell, I know a few that did. One of them is in Bogota, making 12 mil a month, another one is is Medellin, he is a chemical engineer, oversees a production team of 100 people, doing well. I also know many professionals working for 1.5 millones a month, many of them in my family..... :(

I have to object to what was said.... that a good looking colombian woman will never amount up to more than a spic whore. Rubi, can't you just feel the heel of my shoe hitting your family jewels? Come on!!! Up here, I know plenty of colombian women who have careers and are doing well, hell I am one of them. Some of them speak good english, some of them have accents but they are doing very well. I also know colombian men who are doing well. One of my Colombian friends here in T.O won the Bill Gates award for being one of the top 10 microsoft employees worldwide. Works out of Toronto, speaks English with a heavy paisa accent. Started out by doing receptionist work and fetching coffee, worked his way up.

i think if you are realistic and are willing to eat shit for a while while you work your way up, you can make it.

The truly SURREAL thing is that once I read the subject of this thread (and a few postings within the thread) I had every reason to imagine that the 27 year old Colombian chick was none other than a girl I know of from Queens, NY & West Palm Beach/Jupiter, Florida. Last I knew she was living in the Palm Beach County area of Florida with some 50-something to 60-something year old grey/white haired, pale, porky, Irish restaurant owner. He has money. She has been in the United States for twenty years, and just recently obtained a United States Permanent Resident Card (never had her own place, never had, etc., etc., not the independent self relying type; different life situations make for different realities...). Her 40-something year young mom (part manager of a restaurant in Queens) has been an "illegal alien" for decades. The Queen's restaurant is of course partially owned by her mom's "husband" (actually her life subsidizing boyfriend of many years), a much older Caucasian male who originates from northern Spain. Patterns...

Meal tickets and life support systems. Agendas, benefits and opportunists. Cliches...

Buy aye, maybe this particular relationship between the 20-something year aged, "needy", so-called "latina" and the older, fat, white, Irish restaurant owner is truly a match made in Heaven? You know, selfless, undiluted, "true LOVE".

Last I knew the 50-something to 60 year old Irish man had kicked her out of his home (day after Christmas) due to having discovered too many deplorable/disgusting things (ceaseless lies, cover-ups, dishonesty, non-disclosures, dealings with other males, deceptions/manipulations, more lies, etc.) about the Colombiana's character, or lack thereof. Hhhmpf...The Irish man may have taken her back or she could be living via the provisionings of her mom and/or her so-called step father (or someone else may be subsidizing her existence)? Then again, as 'MIAMIMIKE' assures, she just may be "back in Miami". Bottom line is that 'RUSSIAN FRED's' post completely reminded me of a specific Colombian (Colombian American?) chick.
