MT overcome by Flu Like Symptoms

I checked into La Casa Medellin yesterday after driving around for an hour trying to find the hotel. Mitch is out, I drop my luggage off in my room and hang out on the premises. After some time PepeA shows up and we finally meet. We talk for awhile as I wait for my friend to pick me up at the hotel so I can run some errands.

After about two hours the girl at the front desks tell me my driver drove around for two hours but could not find the hotel, so he returned home. I have the girl call me a cab. He arrives in 10 minutues, he a young guy. I´m off to Itagui.

I´ve been exhausted since my arrival in Medellin. At first I thought it was due to my lack of sleep. Well, after I arrive in Itagui, I sit down for dinner with friends and my new family. I´m not feeling to good.

At about 8pm, I feel like SHIT! I need to lay down. I go to my ¨novias house up in barrio por venir. I lay down on the bed and then I am struck with a high fever. I´m COLD, when it´s hot outside. My whole body is aching. I have a severe cough.

They send for a few blankets to cover me with. I am burning up. They give me a few pills and wash it down with some hot water with lemon and I do not know what else. I begin to sweat profusely. Everyone takes turns tending to my needs. My clothes are soaked. I am given some extra clothes to wear.

After about an hour I begin to feel better. I just lay there wrapped up like a mummy, as the kids said about how I looked.

I wake up this morning and everyone´s gone to work. I walk down the hill and breakfast is served upon my arrival. I eat, and want to take a shower. A friend drives me to the pharmacy where I am given a shot on my behind. I feel like a kid again. I am given a some pills to take every six hours and something for my cough, to be taken every eight hours. I arrive at my hotel and take a cold shower.

I´m feelling better, but still get the cold sweats every few minutes.

Hopefully I am up for the party tonight. I have errands to run for now. No more walking for me, I´m calling me a cab.

MT - sorry to hear this. There is a strange travel virus going around. Lots of fluids... I always take "airbourne" in mass amounts before and after every trip. Hope you are feeling better..

MT, sorry to hear it.

See if you can find a big hot bowl of sopa de hueso, nice and greasy. It works wonders for a fever and a delicate appetite.

Failing that, a couple of extra squeezes of lemon in your rum and coke should hopefully set you right.

que nota!

No - this is the virus going around now. There is a quarantine where I am ... creating a big problem with vacationing travellers. MT - again - I always recommend big doses of Airbourne before any trip, during and after (tastes good too). I started to feel fever for only one hour - then it went away. This is a virus I think that was passed in airplanes...now shared in vacation spots! I would personally nurse you back to health my dear, but I am in totally different country ..Puurrr

Hola CatGirl,

Mi esposo y yo are leaving for Colombia in three days. We've had yellow fever vaccinations, but I'd be interested to know what AIRBORNE is and where I can buy it.

Muchas gracias in advance for your help.

CatGirl says on Jan 25, 2008, 10:21:

Marysol - no problem. You can purchase at any drug store and grocery store. It was originally created by a school teacher. It is specifically designed to boost your immunity when you go to public places. It is effervescent - you drop it in about 1/4 cup H2O and drink (orange, lime, lemon, grapefruit) - I take about every 8 hours for a few days before trip. Then follow directions. It is not expensive either - make sure you buy about 3 - 4 of them. Also make sure you get Original Airborne - there are new copies out there. Just ask which one is orginal and made by preschool teacher ;) - if you need more information than this - i can look at my package for company, but it is very popular - especially with high risk populations (children and elderly)

MT - the name of virus hitting southern travellers per CDC is norwalk virus here is the link to see if your symptoms are similar. http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/diseases/submenus/sub_norwalk.htm
Take care - what you need is GOOD WOMAN - jaja...anyone have good woman to help MT and nurse him back to health? please sned quickly for this man is trying to make Medellin sister city to Chicago - support him! Purrr

Hi again CatGirl,

Please ignore the first part of my question. I found Airborne's website, but the product isn't available here in Canada. Do you know if it can be bought in Colombia?

Cheers.

CatGirl says on Jan 25, 2008, 10:24:

Marysol: I just looked t see you are in Canada. Airborne should still be there, if not try to get it if you stop at any US airports. If worse come to worse - take Mega doses of Viamin C 1000mg minimum and some B complex...wish U luck

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly, CatGirl!

I phoned a couple of stores here, but they didn't carry Airborne.

However, we have a stopover at Houston airport, so I'll try to find it there.

¡Salud!

Marysol & Waterdg: Sorry I do not have any idea for this in colombia. But again, there are other ways to keep your immune system strong - vitamins (especially C and B complex), wash your hands and keep the antibact. hand sanitizer with you (although not as good as hand washing) and good sleep.
Not to WORRY or create a problem. There is not some kind of problem specifically in Colombia with this....it appears to be more with the airplanes/tourists travelling to the south (of US border). Since it is very contagious this is the only problem.
Unfortunately the symptoms - mimic typical hangovers! headache, nausea, vomiting you know what comes after this jaja. The big difference is with the fever, chills and slightly swollen glands, but lets not go into mass hysteria ;) - it is not life threatening - only very inconvenient and very contagious..
Enjoy the party!!
