Movistar

I want to pick up one of those really cheap prepaid cell phones to use when I am in Colombia.....I seem to recall that you can pick one up for 20,000 - 30,000, is that about right? What's the best place to buy one (in BQ)?

Shit really? I paid 90,000 for the cheapeast bottomest of the range black and white Nokia. That was Comcel mind you...

The time charges have increased dramatically also. They seem to have caught that North American fever where everyone should be paying monthly.

You can get one for 50 to 60,000 pesos but you need a cedular.

Azul says on Jul 17, 2007, 10:03:

A cedula is not a problem, I just want the cheapest most basic phone I can get.

You can find them in most supermarkets or shopping centers..........Its pretty hard not to bump into a place selling them. You can also get good deals on sim cards off the street that come charged with minutes.good luck!

Azul says on Jul 17, 2007, 19:19:

Thanks curramberochris. It's interesting, I've noticed that sim cards seem to be used differently than in the US. When the battery is dead they just pop their sim card in their friends phone.....seems like they are always playing musical chairs with their cards. I've never even had mine out of my phone :-)

I saw the cheapest phones (last October) at Comcel for 45.000 pesos. You do not need a cedula, but you will need a copy of your passport and two passport size pictures. Same for buying a SIM card also. (unless you buy one used from a street vendor or mom and pop shop)

I bought a cheapie at a big Comcel store last fall. They didn't even need the photos that I brought because they had a little computer cam at the desk. They took my photo with that camera.

It is getting easier all the time to buy cell phones. And it's about damn time. A couple of years ago, one phone store demanded to see the cedula of a chica who had accompanied me to the store. I declined the purchase.

GO WITH MOVISTAR, if you have to correct code, its only 600 pesos a minuite to call the USA and they are MUCH CHEAPER per minuite than the other two carriers for calls within Colombia. A pre paid motorolla model C115 will cost ya abuot 50K pesos.

Semper Fidelis !

BAQ says on Jul 18, 2007, 15:48:

COMCELL SUCKS, THEY ARE MORE THAN TWICE THE PRICE PER MINUITE THAN MOVISTAR.

tomtom33 says on Jul 18, 2007, 16:31:

BAQ, does that take into account that you get 200K worth of minutes on Comcel for 100K? I would not select a carrier based on minute charges. Competition will keep them more or less even over time.

I dropped Movistar shortly after they bought Bell South because of poor service. If most of the numbers you frequently call are one particular carrier, use that carrier. Calls to another phone with the same carrier are the best deal.

I use my VOIP phone to call the US for free.

pedro says on Jul 18, 2007, 16:53:

Movistar is clearly superior to Comcel, last I checked.

Movistar gives 100k of credit for a 50k recharge. They have a fixed rate of 450 pesos plus IVA to any cell (Movistar/Comcel/Tigo) or fixed line. This drops to 79k IVA from the third minute and onwards of your call.

Comcel is nowhere near these prices, they are way more expensive. And you always have to think about what operator your friend has. With Movistar, those days are now over.

que nota!

That would be if you got point to point connections, otherwise if you are using Vonage or companies alike, it is most likely that you are paying a monthly fee, that won´t make for free calls.

But, I'm going to start making some assumptions here.... Which means I might actually end up making an ass out of myself ..........Thu 04 17, 2008 11:34 am

Web, you are correct. I am paying a monthly fee-US$10. I live in 3 places and take my converter with me. And my aging mother can call me wherever I am for the cost of a local call.
