You must be INSANE to move there!!

Ok miami in a few words is just a city to travel once in a while to enjoy a few drinks while your wife does a bit of shopping. With its artificial beaches and overpriced shops and restaurants the city is by no means a middle class American city -though much of its people live below the poverty line according to US Census numbers--
While it is worth a shot visiting it is BY NO MEANS, and I cant stress enough BY NO MEANS worth staying there for a period longer than what a normal vacation should last.
The city depends on tourists to survive, you will see thousands of young highly educated hispanic new immigrants(tourists??) fighting for a job at Burger King. It is definitely not worth moving there. I found the place to be more of a third world version of the US. In a few words, disorganized, dirty, poor and somewhat third worldish. The income disparity is huge, there are folks living in ridiculously over-priced places while most people hardly make a living. Rent is cheap in Kendall, gables, little haiti and further west towards the gator infested everglades and the other surrounding areas packed with all sorts of new immigrants. A house will go for about $750 a month, dont expect much though, education is free though not college; a car is a must, a decently priced vehicle that wont break down on your way back from the dealer will go for about $4000. All and all you will need about 3000 to barely make it with a family of three, if i was you I'd put all my kids to work at fast food joints and you have nothing else to expect except a waitress job in South Beach or Coconut grove, pop that balloon mam',the place is a rathole.

mrs gomez ditto the above.

if you're coming to florida, miami is NOT heaven. all the bull shit that splatters around the web and the news is just that, bull shit.

just another version of suck city.

it sounds like there's you, your husband and child. better off, orlando where there are many more descent jobs and less violence. let it be known, now miami holds the position of most violent city in the u.s. so, think again.

we live in daytona beach. my paisa wife, paisita daughter and me. it's a bit on the boring side, but it's clean, the folks are nice and it has good, safe schools.

miami is only good if you're a capo, someone who's ripped off their latin american country, or just another con artist. avoid it like the plague. contrary to the above poster, i don't even find it nice for a visit. we have a lot of family there and i just feel sorry for them.

peace

I think it is worth passing by

Come on, it sure is worth checking out, you must if you are on your way to the keys or Naples. South Beach is midly entertaining, but then again that is it.

I couldnt agree more other than that with the previous reply. I cant see how on earth could anybody conciously make a decision to live down there? I knock on wood......

Orlando is packed with corporate jobs, but still is second on my nasty-florida-cities guide. Only cool thing is Disney and a few clubs.

In florida move to naples, tallahasse, pensacola or gainesville. When I was in highschool I visited Daytona for spring break and...nothing to see.
My best advise, stay away from the sunshine state.

Tallahassee, Gainsville, Pensacola, come on. Miami is way more interesting than the hick towns. I live in Orlando and don't care for it much, I used to live in Miami and love it. Mrs. Gomez loves to party, loves Latin music, so why would she want to move to one of those towns. Miami is the place to be, plus it has direct flights to Colombia. Did you guys even read her post about what she enjoys? If she has enough money to live in the UK, Miami is going to seem cheap.

Whipstatic says on Jan 4, 2005, 16:55:

Point Taken, she could be a latin party animal
We sure think from a profit maximization perspective, kinda the boring Florida view, but she did ask about costs and living expenses and that right there means....
"shoot, what if my $10000 severance pay wont cover the first two months in Miami?"

Plus you should know that a shot of cuervo, scotch or grey goose is not cheap and you do have to tip the bartender. I read her postings and seems like she used to work for a hotel or something, unless she did some "extra curricular" activities I dont see how you can afford miami "easily". Living la vida loca isnt cheap, and cut me a break...Miami is a rathole, feel comfortable there? all righty then.

No Clue

There are a lot of thieves, former dictators,prostitutes-artists, narcos, vice city wannabes and people of that sort buying.
I heard Montoya bought an apartment there, but then again he married the daughter of a narco dude, I'd say not very reliable people buy there.

kernow62 says on Jan 4, 2005, 17:13:

Read some of Mrs. Gomez's posts, she IS a party animal.

Of course I feel comfortable in Miami. I've lived in ratholes, real ratholes, Miami is paradise. Ever wake up with two or three rats on your bed at night? I have. You pull the sheet really quick and flip them up into the air. Our house in England had an abandoned bakery on one side and a canal on the other, rats were everywhere, I've tangled with them too and have scars to prove it.

I assumed Mrs. Gomez might be moving with her husband who might have an income. Miami compared to the UK anyway you want to cut it is cheap. Hell it is even cheap compared to much of the US. Those other towns you mentioned are cheaper perhaps, but that's because nobody wants to move there. Although I know at least one Colombian family in Tallahassee, they had their pickup truck stlen last week, while my mother-in-law was visiting. There is also a large Hare Krishna (sp?)community in Gainsville with quite a few Colombians amongst them.

On the other hand if she is going to live anywhere on a hotel salary unless she is management it will be tough.

It is tough I bet to live on tips and having a family to support.
I have to say you cracked me up with the rats thing. You could be right about Miami and the UK. I do apologize for that, you are very right about it literally being a rat hole, but when I use the expression I dont literally mean a rat hole, it's a language thing. It's like when grandma says he/she's all bent out of shape, or colder than a weller'ass, that sort of thing.

but you must really not know much about the US. Miami isnt the only tropical paradise. I will name three FYI,
US Virgin Islands, ST CROIX
HAWAII
Puerto Rico (I think it's considered US)
San Diego (just in case PR isnt part of the US)

FYI & while I'm at it FYT. Where in my post did I say Miami was the only tropical paradise in the US? I never even mentioned tropical in my post. How the hell did San Diego become tropical?

If you think Miami is run by narcos, then you should check out PR and US Vigin Islands, a good percentage of the drugs entering the US go through those two places.

I also said literally when I talked about rat-hole to differentiate between that and your idiomatic use of the term.

Ms. Gomez-.I agree with Kernow-Make it Miami Ms. Gomez...a few points.
As to the first post telling you to move to Houston, forget it. The Colombian Community in Miami is much larger than Houston. More importantly, based on your love of salsa, merengue, cumbia, you did not mention, but I imagine Bachata too, if you go to Houston, you're sunk. The latin American community and all the clubs are mostly geared to the Mexican/Mexican American community. Now if you like, Nortena, banda, or cumbia Mexicana, you will love Houston.

Bottom line, Miami and New New York are the 2 best places for this type of music. I'm in Chicago, and we have the second largest Puerto Rican community in the country, we have much more salsa clubs and alike than Houston and we still don't have the feel of Miami

HOUSING AND MIAMI (South Florida)
Miami proper is not the nices place to live, but..I don't know many people who live in Miami. North Miami, Miami beach, North Miami beach, Hollywood, Hallandale and in general most of "north Dade" are good places to live. South Miami and Kendall is ok. Coral Gables too. You also might, should definitely look into Broward county. Most of Broward County, the county just north of Dade county is very nice, and reasonably price. Sunrise and Plantation in particular are very reasonably priced. Lot of nice restaurants and shopping centers.Good publice school system You can't go wrong.

Look get a broker with a rebutable South Florida realtor and you will find many nice place in very nice family oriented neighborhoods. You can private mail me for more info. By the way, my family (parents_ had a condo there, in Miami Beach for many years. Miami was like my second home until recently.

Whatever the case is, Miami is and always be America's dump. Nobody cares about it, it is almost a challenge to see an American in Miami.

Now there is no need to bite my head off for my comment, remember is the land of the free, freedom of speech is there in the constitution for if you swore allegiance to it you must have seen that part somewhere at some point.

It's one thing to be a "start up" but at least make your argument intelligently---as you do quite well. To describe South Florida in this manner just isn't fair. I admit, you generally earn much less than you would up north, but it's also a nice place to live.
Not only that, but because Florida has a huge tourist industry, it has no state income tax and that is worth something

0 funny, 0 helpful.

Whipstatic says on Jan 4, 2005, 18:06:

Ok that is just retarded
Florida has no income tax but...their sales tax is higher, their property taxes among the highest in the nation and they do have the gas tax. Add it up and...yes you end up paying more. Also companies compensate you more in States that have income tax. Now if you ever travelled outside Florida you'll see that gas is cheaper and people are nicer, in fact out of Miami you'll see Americans for the first time.
My wife is from Hamilton county, FL and I do like some of the cities that I mentioned before, but I just dont like Miami and I have met lots and lots of people who have left Miami and are much better off than they were in that rotten city. I love the Florida Keys and Naples, and a bunch of small towns where I've had my scapades (read destin, panama city you name it), but let's just not drag it any further, the city of miami sucks and it drags Florida along with it, starting with your governor, another Bush moron.

Our great mayor just raised it from 8.75% to 9%. Florida is nowhere near that rate.

Property taxes are no higher than Chicago. We just sold our Condo in Miami Beach...Collons ave....

Gasoline here...wrong again. Average price for unleaded Regualar is always above the national average here. Right not it's $2.01 per gallon. That's 87 octane the lowest grade. The highest grade (93) is 2.25 per gallon. I am sure Florida is cheaper

Whipstatic says on Jan 4, 2005, 18:21:

I lived all my life in the South and we never ever see gas higher than Florida's unless you travel up north or West to CA. I am also concerned with your numbers because you didnt check Florida's. I remember seeing folks crossing the border from Florida everyday to buy milk and groceries at the gas station, that is just retarded. They pump and fill up across the border too. Florida is expensive as hell.

Mrs. Gomez you can compare the relative costs of various US cities, though why I am even mentioning this I don't know, after all you asked about Miami. Well as you can see Miami is quite reasonably priced. Compare it to NY for example, then for perspective realise that NY is cheaper by far than London.

someone here said you need $3k/month to live well with your hubby and childm but that seems low to me. I have lived on that in a smaller town further north. But can not imagine Miami on less than $4k/month.

As for clubs, you will have a great time based on your musical tastes as you describe them.

I think a real estate agent would be a good start.

And hey, tons of Colombianos in Miami, as well as the work ethic - nothing gets done after noon on a Friday .......... manana!

Life in Miami from a Resident Senora Gomez-I have lived here in Miami since '96 and everyone has their own perspective of the city-but one thing for sure-you either love it or Hate it! The city has the rating as the Poorest big city in the US but in the last few weeks it was also rated as a number 1 Place to live. Different Pollsters rate on different criteria. One thing for sure-it is COSTLY--the only cheap(er) rent you will find is in Opa-Locka, Liberty City and Overtown.Gunshots will be heard nightly in these neighborhoods. And the houses are not cheap-even there-Dumps sell for $100K+. A Colombian friend of mine recently moved from the Golden Isle area recently-her rent was upped to $1500/monthly(2br-2ba)not a luxury apt. either. She moved to 54th st and 2nd ave.-pays $900/mo. now for a 2br-1bath apt. this is the Little Haiti area FYI. Another Colombian friend of mine rents at 183rd st. and Biscayne(adventura)pays about $1800/monthly--luxury level-2br-2bath)Car Insurance--I pay $1500 yearly for VW New Beetle-with a spotless driving record. Car insurance very high! Condo&house insurance--very high. The Good--No sales tax and you get the $25,000 homestead exemption if you buy your condo/house--you pay no taxes on the 1st 25K of valuation after living in the dwelling for 1 yr. Lots of clubs and partying-- Great Beaches anything you wanna do-its here. Lots of good restaurants-expensive, mediam and low price-your choice. Jobs-tight unless you are skilled-I work in the Medical Profession so I could work 24/7 if I chose to--I don't. Close to the Keys and Everglades park. Very Nice. Miami can be dangerous-very dangerous it would be disingenious to tell you differently. Go farter north to south palm beach county and west of Palm beach--in port st. lucie--2br-1bath concrete block homes still can be had for $75K-the drawback there-no jobs-many retirees and DEAD as far as nightlife. Check out herald.com--they have an online real estate classified section with a lot of listings. FT. Lauderdale Also:sunsentinel.com---Man Many colombians live here and won't LIVE any place else. Miami,Great for some folks-not for everyone.

Lauderdale house/condo prices have escalated approx. 30% in one year(2004). If your family likes sports-no lack of of that pastime here-all the pro teams are represented(though some not too good). Traffic can be horrendous in rush hour and the drivers are absolutely lunatics. Miami last year was rated as the No.1 place for the WORST drivers in the USA.And still with these problems, people still flock to move here-depends on your priorities. Good Luck!!

Broward is more reasonable. West Broward(parts) are more reasonable for sure. If a person bids their time and checks out some foreclosure fixer uppers they can be had and can be great investment potential. Car insurance drops approx. 50% just by miving over the county line from Dade to Broward. There are some great deals still in 55 and over complexes because they have not appreciated as much due to the fact no one under 55 can buy and live in these complexes. Therefore you have eliminated probably 90% of the buying market out of these units. Definitely much cheaper then Dade-many Colombians live in Pembroke Pines--huge population there. Better schools as you mention and a lot less crime. My next move--Its getting to the point I cannot handle this Dade Traffic--terrible. Sunsentnel.com--check it out!!!

My local Colombian joint in Miami Beach is, or was, Antojitos de Mi Tierra, kind of an unpretentious place that had a decent menu. I hadn't been there in more than a month, but now I see it's been changed into an asadero.

Miami Herald

Grilled or stewed, meat makes the meal at Sancocho's

By LINDA BLADHOLM

food at herald.com

Though it's name for a Colombian stew, Jorge Suarez's new South Beach restaurant, Sancocho's, is an asadero or grilled-meat joint like the ones in the highland region around Bogotá where he grew up.

There are rustic wooden tables out front and more seating inside, where the aroma of grilling meat wafts on the air. The seasoned, char-grilled steaks, pork loins, shrimp and chicken are served sizzling hot on metal planchas (plates) set on tablas (wooden planks).

Sancocho comes from the Spanish verb sancochar, meaning to parboil, and is based on colonial Spanish cocidos (meat and vegetable soups) and pucheros (pot-au-feu-type soups). Corn, yuca, potatoes and other Colombian staples go into the stew pot with meat, chicken or seafood. Suarez adds beef ribs, cooked until falling off the bone in a broth seasoned with cumin, paprika and oregano.

He learned to cook from his mother in the town of Fusagasuga in the mountains 50 miles south of Bogotá. She supported her seven children by making empanadas, and he helped sell them at the bus station. The ones he now makes are based on her recipe, with a filling of grilled chopped beef, potato and hard cooked egg.

His first job out of school was as a cook at the camp of a huge coal company, where an American engineer encouraged him to come to this country. In 1985 he followed that dream, landing in a Chicago suburb where he had friends from home. He started as a restaurant dishwasher and by 1991 owned a place of his own. After a visit to Miami three years ago, he purchased a vacation condo. He moved here for good last month and bought the restaurant, formerly an Italian placed called Janji.

One of the more interesting starters is aborrajados, fried sweet plantains slit down the middle, stuffed with guava paste and white cheese and baked until warm and oozy. Mazamorra is an Andean-Indian specialty of hominy corn boiled in milk sweetened with panela (brown loaf sugar).

Specials of the house are char-grilled steaks (New York strip or rib eye), garlic-grilled chicken or shrimp and the bandeja paisa (country flag platter): rice, beans, plantain, an arepa, fried eggs, grilled steak, chicharrones and sliced avocado.

He concocted his best special, called matrimonio, in Chicago to stop an argument between a husband and wife over what they were going to eat. He pleased them both with a combination of grilled, thinly sliced chicken and beef. Meant to be shared, matrimonio comes with salt-encrusted roasted potatoes, fried batons of yuca plus rice and plump red beans.

Wash it down with refreshing tropical fruit juices or guarapo (sugar-cane juice) and end with silken coffee or coconut flan. On weekend nights, Suarez adds burritos, tacos and fajitas to the menu for post-club noshing. Or stop by in the morning and nurse a throbbing head with a bowl of restorative sancocho.

Linda Bladholm's latest book is Latin and Caribbean Grocery Stores Demystified.

Place: Sancocho's Colombian Grille.

This city is not perfect but by all means is one of the most exciting places to live in the US. To all of you that hate it so much you are only showing signs of envy towards Miami. Miami is full of hard working people that like to live well and have fun. If having fun and enjoying your family and friends is bad so be it. Crime is another story. For many years Atlanta was the darling of all and I recently found out that they been hidding their true crime statistic to cover up. So Miami is not perfect, let me tell you that I rather live here than with you people that carry so much hate in their souls.
