Moving to Colombia

Well, my fiance and my 5 month old son are in colombia now, she lived and worked in the u.s. with me for a while and then went back to colombia, i am planning on moving to colombia by the end of the year, i have been there twice. Once for two weeks, and then again for a month. I called the colombian counsulate in chicago and she told me that i can just go down there on a tourist visa and after me and my fiance get married, i can apply for a parent visa i believe it was, which will allow me to stay for two years. When that two years is up i can apply again which will give me three years, and if i apply after that i will become a resident. So im getting the appropriate paperwork together, saving a little money, and traveling down there hopefully by december or early january. If anybody thinks this dont seem right (as far as visas, legally and that) let me know. We werent planning on staying there for too long though, possibly no more than a few years. Thank you, Dan

DAS won't give you a tourist visa for six months right off the bat. When you enter the country they'll probably give you 60 days and then you'll have to renew it with DAS before it expires.

You'll have to get married before your tourist visa expires and then you can take the marriage certificate along with a notorized statement from your colombian wife requesting the visa to MRE in Bogota.

You'll also need a couple of passport type photos.

Give them a call at 520-1146, 520-0729, 520-1041 or 502-0431 and ask them if you need anything else before you go down and wait in line.

TEMPORARY VISA FOR PARENTS OF A COLOMBIAN NATIONAL: When a foreigner, you, is the parent of a Colombian national, you can apply for this type of visa. This visa it’s valid for 3 years, multiple entrances are allowed If want do something besides being a stay-a-home-dad such as study or work. All necessary docs. must be provided.

Be prepared for a lot of paper work 90% must be notarized. Personally I would go for a spouse visa and after three years you can apply for permanent residence. I THINK the parent visa requires five years.

IMHO CALIPRO's advice is the path to follow.

"Credidi pretio parvo emere et magno vendere tibi in animo fuisse!" .
