Moving to Colombia

Hi every one,

Let me start by saying that I am pleased to have found a place where I can get some feedback and information about Colombia.
My husband, two kids and myself are planning to move to Colombia by the end of this year. We intend to live in Chia, which is close to Bogota and Zipaquira where my family lives. I am Colombian but have been abroad for more than 15 years now. Obviously, a lot has changed in the past years but I am some what concerned about the security in general specially for my husband and kids (all blond and blue eyes). We want to live a normal live, be able to enjoy life, work and move freely from one place to the other. That is the reason we are going there after all. I would like to have some feedback from Colombians and foreigners who have lived or live in the Chia - Zipaquira area. We are looking to find a house in a "Conjunto Cerrado" in Chia. Any recommendations ? I know that there are lots of construction projects being sold at the moment. What about kinder gardens and (international) schools etc.

Many thanks !

did you teach your kids the language? if you were smart your kids know castellano and should have no problem, there are many blonde hair blue eyed colombians, the dead give away is in the accent. in bogota i saw many that i thought were fresh of the boat gringos but were colombians who happened to have fair skin and light eyes. i would suspect that your husband, if not latino, would have a harder time blending in once he opens his mouth if he has an accent.

Moving to Colombia (Blanca Rodriguez) Also moving to Chia. Contracted to have house built and scheduled to move in sometime in 2006.

Am retired school teacher married to Colombian(16yrs). She has been away that long and has some of the same concerns as you.

Please be aware that returning Colombians with non-Colombian spouse need to be careful how you transfer funds into the country.

These Companies can Help You. I use to run a Distribution Center for Hitachi Transport System America, Ltd. in Collage Park, Ga. Near the Atlanta Airport. There is also an Import/Export office there. Their Headquarters is located in California near LA. http://www.hitachitransport.com/

Another company that could handle that for you is Nippon Express. http://www.nipponexpressusa.com/home.html

Also check your local Yellow Pages for local Import/Export companies that might cut you some slack for using them. I’d get some pricing from the companies above first and then ask a local company to beat their prices. I don’t think anyone any more will just drop off a container at your house and let you load it. There are just to many laws about what you put in the container, like no chemicals. All contents also have to be documented. Also the company is responsible for the condition of the contents so things inside will have to be professionally secured inside the container. The type of Import/Export companies above can handle things like this, all customs paperwork and arrange all transportation needs.

And yes, count on somewhere $ 5,000.

Moving to Colombia Thanks for the TIP.

The house you are building is that in a conjunto cerrado or in your property ? We are looking at various alternatives but we find it difficult to make a selection from here based on info on the web. We have looked at Tejar del Rio and it looks pretty well though the houses are not bigger than 140 square mts.

Any other tips and recommendations are welcome !

Pedro Gomez has two projects in the area. Click on Proyectos en venta and click first on Encenillos and enlarge the map. You can see the project overlooks Chia.

Go back and click on Macadama. These new buildings will be located over the hill from Encenillos between Sopo and La Calera. This is a beautiful area. Both neighborhoods will have security.

If this link doesn't work just search for Pedro Gomez.
