Moving From NYC

Hi all,

I've been in NYC for more than 14 years and wish to relocate with my 10 y.o. daughter to a city south of NYC. As you may guess this is decision with major implications, as I'll be selling my house, will have to look for a new job, find a school for my girl, etc.

Any ideas?. These are basically the conditions of the place I'd like to move to:

1. A small to medium size city (i.e. a population no greater than 2 millions)
2. A place with good weather conditions and no major natural disasters (no earthquakes, tornados, hurricanes, forest fires)
3. East or West coast is ok.
4. With fairly good job opportunities -I'm planning to work in the Childcare industry-.
5. Cheaper than NYC (any city would be cheaper than NYC, I guess..)

Thanks a lot,

Adriana

adrianar... given any thought to florida? it's great for kids, costs about a third of new york...for anything...or less, and it's got palm trees and beaches. too, there's plenty of work of all kinds.

you can e us (wife and i) and we'll share what we know:

Florida! is a great alternative. Beatiful weather and beaches... you cant beat it! South Florida is growing so fast that Im sure you will have no problem finding work. West Palm Beach is a good mid size city. You should really look into it.

Portland? May want to check on the seismology stuff, but it really is a lovely city with fairly moderate climate.

Thanks so much for your comments and suggestions!

I've considered Florida, but the hurricane season is a real concern. I think it wouldn't be much of an issue if I were by myself.

How about the Carolinas (South or North)?.

nah, they're 'old south' hold outs... florida has better options. we have hurricanes, but they're exciting and we live through 'em.

my wife's a paisa and she deals with it.

i live in west palm beach... hurricanes aren't usually a big deal here, like they were last year. the thing about florida, though, is that public education pretty much sucks everywhere you go...large classes, no money for education...i think we rank about 47 or 48 of the states. north carolina has a lot more going on, in that sense...

Has this threat something to do with Colombia?
Or am I here at the wrong place in the: "I want to move from NYC to NYC south" forum.

Don't go to Florida Bkcarolina is correct. Florida ranks among the lowest in all 50 states for public education. I'm originally from N.Y. and lived in West Palm Beach for 7 years. Now I live in PA. If you really must move south. I would highly suggest to look at a suberb outside of Atlanta. You might be in for a little culture shock when you move south. Yes, they do things differently there. And they really don't care how things were done up north and they are not shy to tell you to your face. I would also take care of any outstanding debt before moving since you will make less money down south. It's just the way it is. Things are cheaper but so are the wages in comparision to NY.
Best of luck.

Certainly public education is also a major concern (probably more than the actual hurricanes!). About S. CAROLINA: I'VE NEVER been to Charleston, but it sounds like an interesting place, with some cultural life. Perhaps public education is fairly good?. I got the feeling that housing can be more expensive than in Fl. but still cheaper than NY.

Sorry Chaparon B. Not sure if you're at the wrong place, but I just happen to be Colombian, so I guess indirectly has something to do with Col. -Is that what you mean?-
