Recently my topic "I WANT TO LIVE IN COLOMBIA - ANY ADVICE" was posted at http://poorbuthappy.com/colombia/node/6701. Unfortunately, it was closed because of some people not behaving verbally but thanks to those who replied. It was much appreciated.
I'm 26 years old. Having lived in Canada for the past 18 years and living a comfortable life so far I feel though that my life is passing me by and I am missing the most important thing and that is to be happy. I was born in Bolivia, lived there for a year, then lived in Medellin for 6 years (I guess living regulations were different back then in the 80's). I don't have any family in Bolivia although my parents were also born in Bolivia and their parents were born in Colombia. Most of them have now died but I have a lot of uncles, aunts, cousins in Medellin.
I love Colombia and its customs a lot. I am aware of the life Colombians live having lived myseld there as a child and having experienced its violence - back then in the 80s anyways. I have seen people shot in front of my eyes back then but things have greatly improved since then. What can I do? I simply love Colombia and I miss it. Now regulations today to live there look so complicated, sometimes I think it's harder for us to become Colombian residents than the other way around.
What would your advice be??? I am currently saving $$ to have 2 years of expenses covered. I have many family places to stay in Medellin. The only problem I feel having is with the D.A.S. I don't want to go to the DAS after 6 months to renew my tourist VISA on a monthly basis, that's what a relative of mine is doing and paying $50 000 pesos every month. How can I become a resident? I don'y want to marry a Colombian woman and then get divorced just to get my residency papers just like some people do. I am also confident in finding work because I have good credentials and I speak and write very well 3 languages, English, French (grew up in Quebec) and Spanish.
Also, do you have any advice about how to find work with a multinational company in Colombia? Any job related websites available for Colombia like www.workopolis.com?
Desperate. Thx.

Dan says on Jan 17, 2005, 14:20: Visa You mentioned renewing a Tourist Visa after 6 months... 6 months is the MAX that you can spend in Colombia as a tourist. After that, you go overboard and end up getting charged a fee if/when you leave the country. Just ask sydneygirl... she is going through the same ordeal and it doesn't look good to you in the eyes of DAS. As far as residency, just look at this site: www.minrelext.com for visa requirements. this way you can look for a job, find out the requirments. Without marriage, it would possibly be done if you own a buisness. Try searching this site for info, I'm sure there is some there. God Bless America! 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

ixent (☼Travelguide writer) says on Jan 17, 2005, 14:50: teaching english? If you've lived in Canada for so long, presumably you consider yourself a native English speaker. If you get an English teaching qualification, you should then be able to get a job from Canada and then the corresponding working visa. (You can't get a working visa by entering the country as a tourist).

viewpoint says on Jan 17, 2005, 15:05: Jimmyto You are making a bigger problem of this residency issue than it really is. Contact the nearest Colombian Embassy or Consulate and explain your circumstances asking for thier assistance or direction. A citizen of of the caribbean, central or south america has favorable residency and citizenship rights in Colombia. All you hear about is the difficulties from on this website from posters from foreign countries outside Latin American and the caribbean.
