Moving Back

If you are a Colombian citizen and are planning to move back after 40 years overseas, what items including cars, home furnishings, etc can you bring into the country without paying import taxes? Also If you spouse is not a Colombian citizen what are their rights to real estate property in Colombia? Also what are the rights to survivorship?

Bring almost everything Bring everything you've got, except your motor vehicles, which are not allowed to be imported.

Since you're Colombian, you can move back to Colombia every few years with everything you own without import taxes. Just label all the boxes with a "baggage" sticker.

What to bring You can bring a full container totally exempt from import duties. You have to contact the colombian embassy wherever you live to get the paperwork done before you ship the container.

You can't bring your car though.

Don't know about the rights of your spouse regarding real estate. I don't think foreign marriages are recognized in Colombia for such purposes. That's why many couples marry in both countries, in Colombia and in the other country.

TO EXPATRIATE: Bringing a Container to Colombia after 40 years Can you please elaborate a bit more about: "Just label all the boxes with a sticker"?

I am also thinking abour retiring in Colombia, and I will be bringing a 40ft container going by ship to either Barranquilla or Santa Marta.
Thanks!

I believe the "baggage sticker" applies only to Colombian citizens, right, Expatriate?

Just my opinion...

Baggage sticker If one of the married couple is a Colombian, make up a bunch of stickers, or use a felt pen, and write the word "baggage" on all of your boxes of personal belongings. That is what my Colombian wife did when we moved from California to Cali two years ago, and we paid no import taxes.

If you're a repatriating Colombian, you're allowed as much baggage as you want to bring, every five or seven years, I forgot exactly.
