I have lived in Medellin , Bogota, NY, S.F., Dallas, Atlanta, Salamanca (Spain), plus a little town in the midwest I now call home. I've been pretty happy everywhere. I guess I'm too dumb to be unhappy. My home is where my wife and children are. I sure miss Medellin, but I also miss the others (some more, some less). Have a great life in Bogotá! Best to you.

Can you try persuading the other 600,000 Colombians in the US to return with you? I am curious why you say everyone knows that it's not easy living in the US? I find it very easy and so does my wife. We must be just too ignorant to know any better.

Hi dear Lola

I understand your feelings. If you are an open person that in the past enjoyed people around you, I do know that a development and industrialized country could be hard place.

I do like to talk to anyone on the street. My point is that every person is interesting. With that ideas I lived in PR and US and looked at least the homeless people to talk. It was a nice experience, especially because I found two big families that supported me and my husband with their frienship.

Bogota is great now, just imagine to walk with you family for some of the various parks there, drinking a cup of Colombian coffe, or perhaps taking the transmilenio and traveling faster.

I wish to know more about you, just email me anytime. I have a family here, husband and my 10 yrs old daughter. Gringos here are not nice when you say you are feeling bad in the US. Utopia is a great guy with a black sense of humor.

The other hand is that if you have political asylum, at least you saved your life and meet your hubby, isnt?

7 Years ago your life was so much in danger that you had to flee Colombia to save your life and seek political asylum? and now, because you are not happy, i guess the threat of your personal life is not there anymore? Sorry, doesnt add up....either the threat never existed, or you are willing to put your life back in danger to be happy......political asylum visas are like a light switch, i see..

Unfortunately I have caught the other end of someone with the same view. My girlfriend wanted to return because of her desire to live free with her friends and to enjoy the social life of Cali. The social life is more free while here is more focused on being successful. As far as education is concerned, you control who you associate with. there are uneducated people everywhere and educated people everywhere. Hopefully you will find yourself when you return. My girlfriend did enjoy her return to her original life style. Good luck.

Bogota???....mmm.....enjoy it!!!!! There is nothing like going back home, whatever you can get in other country, better status, money, career, job nothing is gonna change that desire to go back.....Personally i dont like bogota, i used to live there and what i have is 70% of bad memories and 30% of good ones...pollution, guys trying to sell you what they just stole, cold neighbors that dont even say good morning 'cause they think you are a robber, people that wait to sit down in a bus like for 5 mins after you get up of that chair ("'cause of the virus"), raining raining and raining, there is always somebody trying to take advantage of you, there is always gonna be a bogotano telling you know that cachacos are better than costeños anyway thats part of colombia enjoy it!!!!!!

Maybe you want to have a safaty valve in the US incase things don't work out? Maybe the problem is you. While I miss Colombia, I still love it here and so do most foreigners I know.

She doesnt seem to whine any more than most native Americans just seems life has not gone her way, as that applies to alot of native americans as well....how many times have you read on PBH about foreigners, including US citizens, that complain about Colombia, Colombian food/weather/the people/etc.....and then try figure out ways to violate the Colombian immigration laws, so they can stay there illegally and work......exact same thing as the OP, just in reverse....so i would not criticise her for what alot of Americans do as well....I just cant figure out the political asylum angle of the post...doesnt make any sense....but, some immigration official must have agreed with her case for some reason....the OP hasnt responded to my question, not that i would expect it to happen,,,

Colombia is very beautifull, Bogota is gorgeous, I visited Armenia recently and it's almost like heaven.
Colombia is very good and in some cases it could probably be better than the states, but this is only for the chosen few, THE ONES WITH THE $$$$, or EUROS, if you don't have that don't come B.S. ing me with all that stupid stuff.

Lola,

I am an american.......... Born in the USA. Ive lived my entire life here in the USA. I can't wait until the day comes when I have enough money to retire and move to Colombia. IMO it is the most beautiful country in the world. Please dont let the comments of the people on this board upset you. They, like many Americans, think that the USA is the best country in the world and that EVERYONE in the world has to LOVE it or LEAVE it.

I personally beleive that most people here are brainwashed. We have been taught since birth that Americans have unlimited freedoms. That is the farthest thing from true.

I personally am leaving. I am going to live in Colombia where my heart is. Where I can raise a child who learns what true respect is. Who can appreciate other cultures and people. Who arent self centered, spoiled brats who think that everything is all about them.

divina22 says on Jun 15, 2006, 14:48:

I also live in the US. It's without a doubt a SUPER COUNTRY. I love the safety, the good wages and how organized everything is.

But I was recently in Colombia and saw that there is still so much poverty. And those streets and sidewalks, my God, when will they ever fix them?? But I felt so happy there. The truth is that now I feel a bit depressed, I miss the family, friends, the scenery, the atmosphere, etc.

I want to go back as soon as possible but I started a new job here in the US and they will only give you a week off after your first year on the job!! JUST ONE FREAKING WEEK AFTER A WHOLE YEAR!! That seems so damn stingy to me!

Does anyone here know how one can go about getting a good job in Colombia, perhaps in american companies located there?

HERE'S SIMON!!!!

Take your pick You can live in the US and make good $$$ and have all your little toys, but suffer in other ways, or you can move to Colombia but you will be a lot worse off materially. Everybody wants to have their cake and eat it too!

Where the hell does that something-for-nothing mentality come from anyways? Everybody wants the good things of Colombia but don't want to sacrifice anything that's good about the USA for it? For that matter how is it so many MORONS on here post about how good the USA is but refuse to admit that there are negatives against the positives of living here? What are they teaching you freaks in school these days? :P

adrimm says on Jun 15, 2006, 21:22:

I think it's becuase people have a hard time seeing things in grey. Things are either good or bad, and never a mix of both.

It is similar to how so many people completely blacklist the entire country of Colombia as a travel destination; those of us who have been there realise it's not quite so simple as that.

And the bullets flying.
I

I like to be in America!
Okay

ROSALIA:
I like the city

When you will shut up and get gone!

ROSALIA:
Ev'ryone there will give big cheer!

ANITA:
Ev'ryone there will have moved

el hijuepu, thank you for your message to Lola, you said it.... better, much better that I could ever have. "Respect", "Appreciation for other cultures and people", "Un-self centered" people, the young generation here is so spoiled rotten. Unfortunaletly youth there are loosing all mentioned above. Who's to blame? the virtual world we live in now has allot to do with all this filtering to Colombian youth. I wish instead more of the good american things would pass on to the youth of Colombian and other countries than advertisement on style, sex and materialism. For example remember the slogan "Keep America Beutiful", "Don't be a litter bug" well why can those things catch on there, where people are concious of their environment, keeping it clean, unpolluted, things like that, for others to come.

Anyways, thanks for your sincerity and I wish you and Lola, much love, happiness and success in all you do there, enjoy life to your fullest, wherever your heart may be.

tequendama Thank you for you kind words. I agree. The US has many great things. Unfortunately, as you mentioned, the things that are the most important to me such as respect and values have become lost in the materialism and the elitism.

The first time I visited Colombia, I remember hearing all of the "horror stories" about Colombia. But I took them with a grain of salt. And when I was there, I was very impressed. Young children addressing their seniors with respect (Señor/Señora). The professionalism of the people working behind the desks in places of business. Their willingness to help. The smiles on the faces of the people. People who don't even know you, yet they are willing to open the door of their home for you. People who don't have much money at all, yet they never pass the opportunity to offer you a meal. This is the Colombia that I love.

you have a lot of good points about life in the US but I think that you blew it with your comment about waiting for your child to be born before you leave...if the US is such a nightmare why would you want your child to be born there...better leave now and have your child a pure Colombian citizen and not tainted with an United States citizenship...

el hijuepu says on Jun 19, 2006, 09:22:

mzzmerized Lets be realistic. There are obvious benifits to being born in the US instead of Colombia.

Rubiazo says on Jun 19, 2006, 15:46:

Maybe it's because if the kids are born here they can still be very easily naturalized in Colombia and then will have TWO citizenships. In that case two is always better than one!

I'm actually thinking of getting Italian citizenship just so I can get a Schengen passport and then if I ever want to work in the EU I don't have to suck some beauraucrat's dick and jump through hoops for a work visa.
