Good Movie Very good movie. A little depressing, but realistic. Worth watching. Also, plenty of Colombia slang you can pic up from this movie.

Can you recommend other Colombian movies or
movies with Colombian culture/content. There must be a truckload of Salsa movies out there ;-)

Maria Full of Grace Yes, great movie. And the lead actress was just nomiated for an Oscar; first time for a Colombiana.

Two thumbs up from me (and yes, it is depressing).

YEP,I recommend these col YEP,

I recommend these colombian movies:

La Estrategia del Caracol
Bolivar Soy Yo
La Gente de la Universal
Los Niños Invisibles

Unlike most colombian movies, or Hollywood movies about Colombia, they are not about the same tired themes as always (drug trafficking, violence, etc).

Here's a link that will help you find out more about colombian cinema:

Maria full of grace is a good movie, it's realistic and yea depresing too but it made me feel really sad not because of the film but from previous experiences with that life style it's too close to home if you know what i mean it hits really hard if you've ever been involved in that type of business.. i would recommend it for sure! the film that is!

i would also recommend:

la vendedora de rosas
la virgen de los sicarios

they are in the same genre as "maria full of grace"

and i'm with Colombianox "la estrategia del caracol" was probably one of the best colombian films i ever saw! very funny!!

Pantaleón y las Visitadoras Another movie, filmed in Peru, it's about a bunch of prostitutes (yea... I know), in a boat on the Amazon, but it's not a bad movie and Angie Cepeda is just way too hot... I think she's from Barranquilla...

Well, I certinly DO NOT recommend those movies at all! They are the most filthy, negative, anti-colombian pieces of garbage I've ever seen (besides the Hollywood "colombian" themed movies)!

Those movies do nothing but highlight everything negative about colombian society, I can't understand how people in Colombia would even make movies such as these that only serve to reinforce negative stereotypes about our nation and people!

Thanks guys ... I'm hunting online as we speak .... I mean as you suggest ;-)

I figure this would be a "smart" way of getting an idea of culture and life there in general and whatever part of society the movie is about ;-)

I just finished watching the movie. I thought it was quite good. If this movie was released one or two years ago I probably would not have watched it. If I did, I would have just passed it off as another story about drugs and Colombia.

Now that I have an interest in Colombia and have been learning about Colombia through this site and my novia, I can better understand all the little stories. Very glad I watched it.

Good luck to Catalina Sandino Moreno.

One thing I will say is that there are certain people on this website who are quite funny. The first discussions of this movie prompted very strong negative remarks because it was another story about drugs. How could Colombians be involved in such a project. blah blah blah. Now that the film is successfull and the lead has been nominated for an Oscar, the film is great. Funny

Maria... I saw that movie, actually, I bought it when I was in Colombia for the last month. When I was coming back, I saw the girl that plays the best friend in the Airport. I heard that she was on her way to New York for the Oscars.

The movie is well worth it. I love it.

Trying to find movies I have tried to find this movies in the US before along with a documentary called resistencia with no luck... where have you found them?

I will watch the movie, but I am a little scared of being depressed by the depiction of one of the ugly faces of Colombia. Colombia is so multifaceted and a lot of times we get represented by the drug traffic way too much.

"La virgen de los sicarios" is actually adapted by Franco-Colombian film-maker Barbet Schroeder from a novel by Colombian author Fernando Vallejo. The author was born in Medellín, where he also was raised, and then studied cinema in Italy. He received the Romulo Gallegos Prize in 2003, one of the most prestigious prize of Literature in Latin America. As Schroeder comments about his film: "I wanted the viewers to feel, like the characters, a kind of progressive anaesthesia towards violence, like anyone who wants to continue living in Medellín". I would have to say that although the murder rates are down significantly, most Medellin residents tune out the violence in their city. My wife was not aware of the actual statistics until I showed them to her.

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.
