Movie About Colombia's Beginings

I just watched an American movie titled the "Patriot" with Mel Gibson. It is the story of the American Revolutionary war that precluded the U.S. independence. The movie and actual story was barbaric at best, but it seemed true to life. It gave a fairly accurate account of how the Revolutionary war transpired with England. No one person stood out as the principal hero.

Is there any kind of movie that gives accurate accounts of Colombia’s quest to become the Republic of Colombia? I have seen some Colombia movies on the subject, but most of the movies are no more than a poetic story of Simón Bolívar which is not what I want to see. Nothing against the great “Libertador, but I want to know more about Francisco de Paula Santander, Antonio Nariño, Tomás Cipriano de Mosquera, Don Jose Manuel Restrepo, and other such people who helped make the Republic of Colombia. I saw these names and pictures along with other early leaders of Colombia during a recent visit to the national museum in Bogotá.

I know that Colombia has a great history and knowing how Colombia got to today from yesterday will make understanding a lot of the tribulations that happen daily more easy to deal with.

I'll bet that Caracol or RCN probably have historical telenovelas or films..

Great topic Rikito, that's funny, I've also thought similar things while watching 'The Patriot'....I like how you think! There was a series on Caracol TV Internacional a few years ago about Colombian history but I can't recall what it was called, something like 'Reviviendo Nuestra Historia'. It did feature all of the founding fathers you mentioned. I dream of one day seeing a high-budget, sweeping, epic movie about Bolivar. That would be awesome!

HERE'S SIMON!!!!

The only Simón Bolívar film I have seen was a late sixties film (around 1968 or 69), starring Maximilian Schell as Bolívar. The film was a joint effort between Venezuela and Italy, I believe. It was...hum...very dated and not all that great. I think there was an earlier Mexican film about Bolivar as well. They are both probably impossible to find. There's always the Colombian film, Bolivar soy yo...

Hoy se nota en la floresta un ambiente de alegría. ¡Y el rumor de ranchería es mas dulce y sabe a fiesta!

The thing is...I do not want a film that has Bolivar all over the place. Let me be a little opinionated. No doubt that Bolivar was great and did great things, but if he was anything like the U.S. founding fathers his reputation was a little murky at times with literary and poetic license taken in describing his epic life. One thinks that he made every decision, was at every battle, killed every one of the enemy, and leaped tall buildings during the commercials. The other founding fathers of Colombia played important roles as well. Bolivar could not have done what he did without them. It's that part of Colombia history that I think would make a good movie.

Of course in Colombia, if you do not have murder, rape, incest, nudity, matricide, fratricide, infanticide, bestiality, drugs, impossible music, bad scripts, and poor lighting during the first 30 minutes of the movie why bother? Who wants to see a movie without all of that quality theatre in it.

It is not life that matters, but the journey.
