Motorcycle "Myth"

I was searching around the forums. Then I was reading threads about people wanting to buy and or ride a motorcycle in Colombia. Many said they were death traps and what have you. That you will be robbed at gun point etc etc.All though any thing can happen like in any country in the world.Riding a motorcycle in Colombia is fun fuel efficient and a blast. So if any one wants to buy one do not let some here shun you away from riding a motorcycle. There are alot of Motorcycle groups and Clubs out there to for some great group riding.

Pereira then Santa Rosa for a week or 2, depending. I used to ride Triumphs mostly, though I had other bikes, like Ariel Red Hunter, Norton, but mostly Triumphs. Am now in Bogota but leave tomorrow for Pereira then S.R. I looked at Casa Kiwi site, he should know about KLR's, but then looking at the videos of Giann, the roads look okay for road riding, but what about if I want to go off road?? and I am sure there would be good off road here.

I was thinking of riding a motorcycle too. Then I started hearing about people getting killed. About a thousand people a year in Colombia die riding motorcycles. I even witnessed a few accidents. When I was in Medellin last September there was a hoffic accident on avenida Las Vegas. Two young woman got killed on their motorcycles. I was at my girlfriend's job and the girls in the office showed us a picture from the accident that was posted on the internet. In the picture you could see that one of the girl's head got crushed in the accident. A truck ran over her head after she fell off the motorcycle.

I was thinking of . . . . . . but I never did. Then I started listening . . . so I never did. How many die from obesity and obesity related diseases.

Were the girls experienced riders? How powerful was the bike? Was it a bike or moped? Were they riding according to the condition at the time?

When your dead, your dead, whether a crushed head or a broken neck.

Thanks Morpheus for your hard won advice that has been gained no doubt by extensive experience in this matter.

I was just trying to give a little insight. I actually used to ride motorcycles. Through observation, its not too difficult to figure out that its an unnecessary risk to be riding around Colombia

"How many die from obesity and obesity related diseases"

That can be avoided too.

Guys You can die while your talking on the computer from a bullet that went astray from a shooting range. This has happend before.More people die in the US from smoking that died in the Iraq war so far. There is a risk for every thing. You could get in a car accident or hit by a car while walking. So riding a motorcycle of course there will be some risk like any thing you do in life. But some make it seem like if you ride a bike you will instantly die in a blaze of fire.

Peter that sounds like a great idea.If any one will write one that would be sweet.I will once I get the funds to pull for a R-6.

Here is the Yamaha Website.I will try and get the Suzuki one for you to.

For all the riders here we all know how it is to be on a bike.I cannot explain in words. It is well worth it.Plus we don't get to pay tolls in Colombia. There is great on and off road fun in Colombia. You can even go to a track for some racing.

Sure, there are plenty of ways to die but motorcycle riding is suicidal. I rode a motorcyle in Medellin while drunk. I felt safe because it was early in the morning and there were'nt too many cars on the road. If it was my only form of transportation and I had to ride one everyday, i'm sure I would get killed eventually.

Giann says on Dec 30, 2006, 20:52:

Are you serious? You were drunk you were a hazzard not only to yourself but every one else on the road.Motorcycle riding isn't suicidal. There are thousands of motorcycle riders in Colombia with many clubs group rides and such.If you ride drunk of course you will get killed.Hell if you were walking while intoxicated where you can barely walk you would be a danger to.So what is your point Morphus?

Just curious Whenever I see someone riding around on a nice, say, BMW moto in Bogota I think, "Doesn't that kinda make you stand out as rich and vulnerable to kidnapping?"

It's sort of like the few people I've seen with Ferraris and Porsches in Colombia, though I always assume they're deeply connected to the mafia and don't have the same set of worries as the average jose.

Harley has a saying:"If I have to explain, you wouldn't ....... understand" with regards to Harley riding but it is applicable to all bikes. Even at the Rally of All Rallys for Harley Riders, Sturgis,SD, you see more and more Japanese and other non-Harley bikes participating there..btw, you never know when someone will take a photo of you while doing something like picking your nose in public...check out the Harley biker with the HD bar and shield doorag on the right side in the middle...hahahah....

Giann..is that in front of the HD dealership in Bogota?

Lowell says on Dec 31, 2006, 08:32:

My Moto I thought that I'd chanced things enough a long time ago with regards to Motorcycles. With the crap that I used to pull, I should have been dead many times over. I must of had some real strong angels riding with me. The street meant wheelies, curves and speed. The dirt meant tear it up and get some air too.

For years while living in LA I rode a chopper and a Honda Scrambler. All the time without a helmet. I also rode off-road bikes for years (with helmet) and did a bit of racing. Later I had a 400 Husky for playing in the desert. It's great to be back in the saddle.

Riding here is a different ball game as many people (cars and motos)move or go without looking first. Lots of pot holes...... Others seem to want to prove a point of being ahead of you, passing and cutting you off in dangerous situations. I mostly ride for recreation, so I try to avoid peak traffic times. I also realize my reaction time isn't what it used to be and I always have to remind myself of that as my craziness behind the handlebars is still there.

I really like to ride on dirt roads and I'm looking for someone to do that with. I also don't know which areas (Mafia....)to stay out of. That'll come later.

Getting the license was an experience. The physical, mental and reaction test was a bit difficult as I still have a hard time understanding Spanish spoken rapidly. I passed the first time, even with them refusing to talk to me in a manner in which I could more easily understand. Not like California where you can take the test in various languages and they TRY to help you.

If I'm able to post a picture of my moto, you'll see that it's a bit of an attention getter. I get looks and comments every time I go out. I enjoy the attention. But, I aware that I need to be cautiuous about being robbed of my moto.

Man, motos have sure changed since I stopped riding years ago. real good suspensions, alarm, interchangeable easy repairable parts, more power from less cc's..................

ENJOY!

I don’t seem to be able to post my picture. Will try later.

Is There Any Harley dealers in Medillin? I will be there next month and would like to get a shirt from them while I am there(if they are there). I get one in every city/country that I go to and yes, I actually own a Harley. I love riding, no matter where it is. There are certain risks that you assume with riding and you accept that and go on. I would rather die doing what I love doing than die worrying about what I shouldn't do. We are all gonna get it one of these days so, why not have a damn good time doing it!
As for Stugis, SD, I did it this year and that damn place was INSANE! Insane in a good way of course!
Check this site out...This was my experience there. I hope that none of photos offend anyone...If bare flesh offends you, don't look!!

The Colombia Harley T-shirts from Bogota sometimes can be found on Ebay. I have paid anywhere from $6 to $35 for them on Ebay. Try a search using harley colombia and harley bogota. Might take a bit for one to come up for sale though. I have pretty much bought all of them that were offered for the last couple of years.

Not if I don't have control its not too difficult to figure out that its an unnecessary risk to be riding around Colombia

Getting killed is preferable to: Walking with a limp, not walking at all, having your IQ lowered 100 points, spending your life in a wheel chair.

An 18 year old girl was given a new moto. Her family was poor but her brothers had done well and could afford the gift.

She was driving with her mother as a passanger, failed to see a car, or the car failed to see her. She was killed and her mother will be confined to a wheelchair for the remainder of her life.

Great,, her mother goes home to an empty house,, or maybe I should say she will be wheeled into an empty house.

Nope,, no riding in Colombia. I've worked too hard and live better than the President and I'm not about to throw it away on something UNNESESSARY and I have NO CONTROL over the driving habits of others.

I wonder what I'd be thinking in the Hospital after a moto accident ? Well, crap, there goes the rest of my life and for what ? Miss out of finishing my latest project,,

This is the new ceiling being installed,, finished about two weeks ago and the installation was beyond my expectations.
