I think it´s a long shot but I´d like to buy a place in the Santa Marta area. I´m looking at spending $10000-20000 with a $5000 down payment. Is it possible without working in Colombia?

You will need to have residence here for about 6 months BEFORE most banks will open an account for you, then another 3-6 months of HISTORY with the bank before they will consider extending you credit. To get the dredit, you MUST PROVE a steady monthly income and a HISTORY of that income. Semper Fidelis ! |

TioJoe says on Oct 28, 2007, 02:36: $10000-20000 with a $5000 down payment -- equates to a 5 to 15 thou loan with a few additional expenses. Hell put it on your credit card and save yourself a lot of aggravation. The home buying process is complicated enough with out trying to get a loan from a Colombian bank to add to the confusion.

Tinto (Moderator) says on Oct 28, 2007, 15:45: Re the link above about www.prosper.com - unless they've changed the rules, you must have a U.S. social security number to borrow or lend. I participated as a lender for a brief time about a year ago and decided it's a better deal for borrowers than lenders. If you have very good credit, you can borrow up to $25K USD at 8 - 10%. That's not bad for unsecured, low-documentation loans.
