More Modern, Nicer City: Medellin or Monterrey, Mexico

Monterrey is widely considered to be one of Latin America`s most modern, orderly, and attractive cities, and is often compared to Medellin. Do they really compare? If so, in what respects, and ultimately, which is the more modern or nicer city?

My 2 Pesos My experience with both is scant, about three days each.

Monterrey, to me, is probably more attractive, especially the Macroplaza area. In fact, I kind of have it ranked as the nicest overall Latin American city that I've been too.

Nevertheless, I had a great time when I went to Medellin. The ladies were friendly and I definitely enjoyed the nightlife a bit more.

Mexico is more gringonized Medellin is not as gringonized as Monterrey, and has more natural aspect of that Medellin is surrounded by green mountians, although more and more of those stupid high rise torres en el poblado are being built.

Damm, this is a tough one. The cities remind me very much of one another. Both of them have dramatic natural settings with towering mountain ranges rising up behind the cities. Both of them are manufacturing centers and pride themselves on their hardworking people. Both of them have the same type of drivers but hey, it seems to work. I see a lot of near collisions but very few accidents. The people in both seem to be very physically fit - in fact, Monterrey is an amazing contrast to San Antonio. Medellin has a better climate than Monterrey but Monterrey has a better economy. Both cities have affluent areas, El Poblado in Medellin and San Pedro Garza Garcia in Monterrey (actually a suburb). The women of Monterrey, although attractive, did not impress me like the women of Medellin, the most gorgeous on earth. One thing I do like about Monterrey is not worrying about something happening to me - it is a fairly safe city. No, I just can't decide. They're both great cities.

Comparison The comparison stems actually from the fact that both cities, not being the capital of its respective countries (Mexico and Colombia) are the industrial centers of the country, their inhabitants are hard working and "money oriented" and therefore seem to "share" common traits.
Monterrey is more modern and developed than Medellin but the latter has much better weather, women but I guess Monterrey´s mexican restaurants are better, no?

Oh, yes, some good food in Monterrey especially if you like cabrito. In San Antonio, the enchiladas always come with rice and beans but in Monterrey, they seem to serve potatoes frequently.

"Monterrey is more modern and developed than Medellin"

Oh really? Does Monterrey have a Metrocable?

"but I guess Monterrey´s mexican restaurants are better, no?"

And I'm guessing that Medellin's colombian restaurants are better, no?

Now to answer Jelsaads initial question...why Medellin, of course!!!

Monterrey like Medellin? Where is Monterrey often compared to Medellin? I've never heard that until this post.

Geographically they have a lot in common. I think because of the fact that Medellin is literally an incredible city situated in a valley surrrounded by montains, it has an edge over Monterrey which has a similar setting but it is not as pronounced, and lacks the beautiful landscape that Medellin has. The view of the city from Pueblito Paisa is most indicative of this point. Or in your ride "down" to the city from Rio Negro allows you to get an even more dramatic perspective as to how breath taking Medellin looks on the hoizon.

From an economic perspective, Monterrey easily out ranks Medellin. Monterrey is the economic engine of Mexico. It is a common misconception that Mexico City, being as large as it is, and because it is the capital, that it is the economic engine of Mexico. Monterrey is more modern than Medellin in every respect. It also has a much higer standard of living for the average person living there. Stated quite simply, there is more wealth concentrated in both industry and in the average individual.

And ColX....don't start with these silly comparisons. No, Monterrey does not have a Metro. So what? They have a very modern public transportation system with modern buses that run timely and consistently, as opposed to Medellin, which has a series of over crowded "urbanized chivas" that run irregularly at best.

Monterrey is the city that it is because of it's geographic proximity to the US. That fact, is what elevates Monterrey to the level that it is. Therefore, Medellin cannot be, nor ever will be in a position to compare to Monterrey. Geography simply has its advantages

Right on, Gomezman, very good,! Así se habla!

"Therefore, Medellin cannot be, nor ever will be in a position to compare to Monterrey"

I disagree 100% with your pessimistic assertion. You can't tell what the future holds for either city.

Why do people keep saying that Monterrey does not have a subway system? It has had one since 1991. Check it out: http://metrorrey.nl.gob.mx/

don't know squat about monterey.... but absolutely love medellin. after all my travels throughout the world...including much of mexico, medellin is just a jewel.

the ladies are the best the climate is fantastic and the dangers are ones that i learned to deal with, years ago. they exist, but are not a deterrent to living there.

actually, now, i prefer living in the mountains close to rio negro over living in medellin, but that's just me. i tired of the pompousness of poblado where i lived for a number of years.

but, what do i know, monterey may be a show stopper. it sure is a hell of a lot closer.

Well, Kernow, in Monterrey they think everyone in the south of Mexico sits on their fat asses all day while they are hard at work building a dynamic prosperous Mexico. It's not just about money.
