PBH / colombia (travelguide, pictures) / post |
I wasn't sorry to see the "Idiot Gringo" thread locked and would not have been sorry to see it deleted. I guess that I'm just becoming less and less tolerant in my old age.
There are people of every gender, color, religion, and national origin that I do not care for. It may be less politically incorrect for whatever reason to single out Gringos or men for ridicule. But I just don't care for any of this garbage.

jh816 says on Aug 15, 2006, 07:51: Why the attitude? Good post. Yes, I'm sure there are a lot of tourists in Colombia that do not paint a great picture of the rest of us. As an experienced resident, if you want to tell them that displaying their wealth freely may not be safe then do so in a civil way.

bufalo says on Aug 15, 2006, 08:29: Someone might not like the way tomtom33 dresses, acts,,,,whatever, but to say he shouldn't is a bit....???? I agree with strober, I mean I try not to stickout too much (impossible at times) but on the other hand I am what I am. Should all the Middle Eastern people give up their robes and headgear when they move to NY? What about the asians who had surgery to make their eyes rounder so they fit in better? One of the reasons I travel is because things are always different, even if there are some I don't like (not referring to tomtom or anyone else, just ingeneral). I'd also be like telling the colombians in NY to stop eating arepas, turn down the music....etc. "If you don't like it - lump it, take it down the road and dump it." - Archie Bunker played by Carroll O'Connor 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

jh816 says on Aug 15, 2006, 08:34: Cultural respect?? The fact that you do not choose to adopt every aspect of a culture does not imply disrespect. Sure you're a guest, learn the cultural specifics of the country and try to not break the cultural mores, but this doesn't mean blind assimilation. Example: When I travel to the Middle East, I make it a point to not do things like showing the soles of my shoes or waving/touching with my left hand, but I wouldn't adopt many of their traditions.

tomtom33 says on Aug 15, 2006, 11:38: Replies Brody, I am not the guy in the boating business. I am retired and spend 100% of my time in the monkey business. I don't make much of an effort to blend. My street name is "Papa Noel," and everyone knows me. However, I never discuss my wealth mostly because there isn't much to discuss. I ride the bus and eat in cheaper restaurants, although I do like to splurge on good eats on occasion. I also don't drink or drug and rarely stay out late.

Miguel_Clavo says on Aug 17, 2006, 22:19: How sorry a persons life must be for them to have to bitch about how other people dress in Colombia on the PBH website!!! Gawd, i hope i never get to have such a pathetic life as they seem to have. Who gives a flying f#ck how other people dress? Who died and left these arrogant, pompous pieces of shit the Fashion Police?? Who do these clowns think they are?? The funny thing is, that in about 20 years, most of these same POS's will be the object of the next-generation of PBHrs, who will whine and bitch about how the current PBHrs dress and how stupid they look and act!!! Quit hating on other people and get a life, or at least, mind your own f-cking business..Dont like the fact that some other person has a boat/plane/kayak/moped/bicycle??? So f-ing what, i am sure you will get over it...or get one yourself, if you can..I bet these people pray everynight so that everyone else turns into their clone overnight.....then they would be in fashion and attitude heaven, right?? "I would rather die living life, than to live a dying life."........ Oh, and my PM is always ON. Great Bumper Sticker: "Home of the Free, Because of the Brave" 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

chupacabra says on Aug 18, 2006, 11:44: I was a backpacker for 10 years of my life but I was in style and I always bathed even if it was in the river. This is a funny post. Really, I don´t think us backpackers take too much offense from this kinds of posts. Not all of us are poor but for those of us who are, it just takes alot of bravery to do something on that level without an escape route. My hat goes off to all my fellow backpackers.
