Yes. Why do these people find me. I have no idea. Oh well, good to tell the stories.
I meet all these people in Medellin in the Centro. Near a hostal I think.
Gringo one.
I am sitting in a bar with my Colombian friends and this gringo guy walks up and asks us where we are from etc.
Lets call him "Bob". So then we asked him where he was from. Here are the quotes.
Skippy: "So, Bob where are you from?"
Bob: "Ummmm.... you know I'm from Miama and I got a 30 ft boat."
Okay, nice to know dumb ass, and nice to mention how rich you in front of Colombian people who work their asses off to survive and support their families.
Real class.
We sat around and listened to "Bob" brag about his boing and uninspiring life in Miami until we couldn't take it any more and left.
Gringo 2
Let's call him "Frank".
Again, I was sitting in the centro with my Colombian friends.
Frank walks up and starts talking to us. Again the exact quotes.
Us: "Where are you from FRank?"
Frank: "ummmmmm. That's hard to say because I've been to 22 countries in the last six months."
Again. Nice to say in front of hard working Colombians who barely make enough money to see Colombia let alone Internationl travel. Classy.
Besides that, who cares if you've travelled or about your stupid boat.
Advice.
If you want to have a boring mind-numbing evening be sure and spend it with a bunch of rich gringos trying to out joust each other where they've travelled, the size of their boat or what ever.
If you want to have a great evening. Hang out with some Colombians in a simple bar enjoying a few rums and experiencing this wonderful culture.

Sounds like the ignorance of San José, Costa Rica is headed further south. "Don't tase me, bro!!!!" 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

miamimike says on Aug 14, 2006, 16:21: Usually When I see what appears to be another Gringo I cross the street to avoid him. I avoid the Zona Rosa like the Bubonic Plague where I may be more likely to run into one and the stupid boasting that commences about how big his Boat is, how many Corvettes, Harleys, How many Head of cattle on his Ranch ect that he has. Along with the White Penny Loafers I will include Pointy Toed Cowboy Boots(snake/lizard skin lol)and those Huge Dinner Plate Size Cowboy Belt Buckles along with a Cowboy Hat. These 3 items of Clothing spell trouble 99% of the time and I avoid 'em like the plague! I go to see the Colombian Culture why would I frequent places where I hear English spoken- I can hear that in the USA, why travel to Colombia? LOL On Sept 17, 2008: Senator John McCain said, as he had many times before, that he believed the fundamentals of the economy were "strong."Hours later he backpedaled, explaining that he had meant that American workers were Strong. 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Lostgringo says on Aug 14, 2006, 17:17: Different Gringos I was drinking with a friend one night who works at the American Embassy. I had talked to him about where I lived and what is was like here in Victoria, BC. Anyway, one afternoon he went drinking in Colombian bar. There were around 4 colombians at another table gunning him off. Finally, they asked "are you American?" No he answered I am Canadian. Oh they said where in Canada. He said I am from Victoria. One of them said "oh I hear it is nice in Victoria." bla bla bla. We had a great laugh over this. He explained to me that in many cases Colombians are not fond of Americans. And he sensed this was true in this situation. So my question is this, "Are all Gringos created the same." In Canada we are sometimes reserved. Boasting is seen as bad behaviour. I am not saying it doesn't happen I am just saying it is in bad taste here. Is that a common practice in the USA or just Miama??? lol. Rickman says on Aug 14, 2006, 18:20: I am getting really tired of seeing poor and stupid tourists in Colombia. These guys are usually the “backpacker” types that have no money so they have to stay in hostels. They like to go around taking pride in their poverty by criticizing the tourists who have money. Well, CONGRADULATIONS on being poor. If I was stupid and had no ambition I too would be poor. Really, what you have (not!) accomplished in life is very easy to have. I am so so soooooo sorry that I have more money than you and enjoy staying in nice hotels. Of course, the Euro-trash-backpacker types like to think “how smart” they are since they have seen the “real” Colombia. To translate this, they mean to say they have lived like a poor stupid Colombian does who has no money. Great! I wish I too could learn to sleep on the floor and bath in dirty water. That would be a great experience and would make me “smart” like the dirty backpackers. When I travel I like to be around clean people who have enough intelligence to figure out how to make money in life. If you cannot afford to stay in at lease the Dann then I think you should stay in your home country and not travel at all. The funny thing is I probably travel a lot more than these dirt-balls but I stay in top-notch establishments instead of flee infested hostels. Yesterday I saw a group of Eurotrash walking around Medellin. They all had backpacks, looked like they had not bathed in a week, the males had not shaven in a while, the females looked like future bagladies, several had the mandatory piercings, etc. I am sure I do not have to give more details to describe these gypsies. I later found out they were from England and wondered just how far things have sunk in the motherland? I really would suggest that the backpackers all go home and stop embarrassing their home country. What must the Colombians think when they see these people? I am sure the poor Colombians who they call “friends” think they are great since lowlifes like to be with other lowlifes. But I assure everyone reading this that my friends who live in Poblado think as little of the backpackers as I do. Bottom line is if you do not have money to travel then stay at home!!!! That gringo you see driving around in the rented BMW is me. Do not sneer and make faces at me. I earned my money from hard work. Do you know what work even is? All those Medellin girls you see flocking to me may like me because of my money but I am sure they also like the fact that I can carry on a conversation from going to a top notch U.S. University. I am also sure they like me because I can take them places with class and culture without looking at an empty wallet. I do not think I am better than you because I have money but for all the other reasons as well. I am rich and damn happy!!!! And in the end I will always get the chicas! That is how life works.
