MONTOYA Sets Record at New Hampshire Motor Speedway Friday.

LOUDON, N.H. (AP) - Juan Pablo Montoya will have a hard time playing the role of darkhorse if he keeps driving like this.

The former Formula One star will make his debut in NASCAR's Chase for the championship from the pole after setting a track record at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Friday.

Montoya turned a lap at 133.431 mph on the 1.058-mile oval, breaking the mark of 133.357 set by Ryan Newman in 2003. It's a good way to start the 10-race Chase, but Montoya cautioned it's just a start.

"If it was a 10-lap shootout, I'd say 'Hey, we're pretty good,"' Montoya said.

The Earnhardt Ganassi Racing driver will have plenty of company from his fellow Chase drivers on Sunday. Tony Stewart, who won the regular season title, will start second. Kurt Busch, who started his run to the 2004 title with a win at New Hampshire in the inaugural Chase race, is third. Denny Hamlin qualified fourth, with Carl Edwards fifth.

Busch is only too happy to be surrounded by fellow Chase competitors when the green flag drops for Sunday's 300-lap race. His bid for a repeat title in 2005 ended three laps into the fall event here when a non-Chase driver knocked him out.

"Your Chase can get ruined pretty early," Busch said.

The Chase is already off to a sluggish start for Brian Vickers, who edged Kyle Busch for the final spot last week at Richmond. Vickers qualified 26th, last among the 12 Chase drivers.

Four-time series champion Jeff Gordon will start 10th, with Kasey Kahne 11th. Three-time defending champion Jimmie Johnson qualified 16th, just behind Mark Martin (14th) and slightly ahead of Newman (18th). Greg Biffle qualified 22nd.

Despite grabbing the second pole of his Cup career, Montoya hardly considers himself the favorite. He pointed to Martin as the driver with the circuit's fastest car, but added there's a certain freedom that comes with the start of the Chase.

After sweating out the last few races in hopes of making the 12-driver cutoff, Montoya can get back to focusing on winning races. He's one of four drivers in the Chase who have yet to reach Victory Lane this year.

Montoya said he's not going to take any unnecessary chances Sunday. There are nine races to go and one major mistake would leave him playing out the string. He's worked too hard since making the move to NASCAR two years ago to risk the whole season on just one race.

"You've got to be very smart," he said. "Most of cars in the Chase are going to be there. To gain points is going to be really hard, but to lose points to them is very easy."

from what little I really know about nascar....
I think he can do it.
It's no 'given' for sure.
But, at times, when he was in the lead, he had more than a 2-second lead, which they tell me, is incredible.
It's really up to 'the team'.
And, making sure they have 'good tires' on to stay in the lead.
It's incredible, what happens to those tires during a race.
I'm not sure.... they get 'new tires' maybe 2 times in a 500 mile race?

If their whole team gets the job done, then Pablo has shown recently that 'he's arrived' near the top.
I think he could very well be the champ this year.
They've got ten races, I think, to go and he's emerged at just the right time.

GS--I actually drove a stock car for 2 or 3 years without sponsorship. Well, my local pub gave me free beer to put their logo on the car, which saved me a lot of money.....Even back in the day the tires for a local amatuer track were 110 bucks a pop, and cut like butter with any contact. The difference between the stickers (new tires with the Hoosier sticker on them) and those that have a few races on them (inconeivable for the pros) is incredible. The guys in NASCAR are paying about 400 bucks a pop ($1,600 per pit stop) and change them maybe 8 to 10 times per race. It boggles me little mind.

I've been following JPM since his days in CART (just after marrying my paisita) and love his agressive style. He has real balls for leaving F1 and going to "redneck" racing, and has changed the whole image of the sport. That said, there's a lot more to it than just the tires, like suspension geometry, etc. but I won't bore with the details.

Once again, go JPM..

Oh, BTW, my little picture is our tent at the Hungarian grand prix back when JPM was with Williams. We were surrounded by Germans, who of course, were Schumi fans. I bought the flags just to fck with them, and we made friends with a group of firemen from Dresden as the lil paisita speaks German also, and they spoke reasonable English with me

go ahead and 'bore us'.... geometry is never boring.
Most people don't see anymore than the cars running in circles.
Just like CG was commenting about his colombian wife's boredome with baseball.
There's so much going on, that a person can't SEE, unless they played the game.

8 to 10 times tire changes??? no shit?!?!?

I only keep track here on the internet... and occasionally when I stop at my parents' house, they are watching it.

Yeah... I hope Juan Pablo RUNS AWAY with it, at this point.
I don't think the red necks like him too much, because of being latino.

A little preview from msnsports :

Blue Chip -- Juan Pablo Montoya
Montoya has been the class of the field since he showed up at New Hampshire this weekend. He won his first pole at the track and topped the speed chart in all three practices. Montoya posted a career-high 12th-place finish in his fifth start on the one-miler in July. He's completed 99.8 percent of all laps raced at the track and has an average finish of 20.6.

On winning the pole: "It was really good. We really nailed the lap. These Chevy motors just run so good. (Earnhardt Ganassi Racing) and everybody has just done such a nice job with the cars. When they're this good they become pretty easy to drive, to be honest, and handle great."

....by 0.093 of a second.

JPM leads for 104 of 300 laps.
That counts.
I don't understand, but it does.

JPM is looking good.
Even the gringo announcers admitting, he had the fastest care ... throughout the day.
And, that he was the most aggressive driver.

At one point, during the last 3rd part of the race, he was back as far as 16th.

And, ... as opposed to what you have read here on pbh... JP seems pretty happy, of course, and like a decent guy.

from the associated press:

LOUDON, N.H. (AP) - Mark Martin held off Juan Pablo Montoya on a late frantic restart to win the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship opener at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

It is Martin's series-best fifth victory of the season and spoiled what could have been a blockbuster day for Montoya. Making his 100th career start on his 34th birthday, Montoya led every practice session while setting the stage for his second career Sprint Cup Series victory.
Instead, Martin used pit strategy to take the lead, and after leading a race-high 104 laps, Montoya had to chase him down.

He came up short in a three-lap sprint to the finish, which ended under caution when AJ Allmendinger wrecked on the final lap.

Montoya's Chase run hits big bump in Charlotte

Associated Press

Updated: October 18, 2009, 12:26 AM EDT

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) - Juan Pablo Montoya's magical run is done.

The Colombian driver likely saw his chances of winning NASCAR's Chase for the championship evaporate on a frustrating Saturday night at Lowe's Motor Speedway.
A series of mishaps sent him to a 35th-place finish, dropping him from third to sixth in the standings.

"It happens," Montoya said. "It's one of those racing things and you've just got to move on."

Maybe, but his hopes of becoming the first foreign-born driver to win the Cup title likely ended during a restart early in the race when he nudged into the back of Clint Bowyer. Mark Martin then slammed into Montoya's right rear quarter panel, sending Montoya slipping through the field.

Montoya didn't blame Bowyer or Martin, but Jeff Gordon, who was ahead of them.

"Every time the 24 restarted, everybody packed in the back," Montoya said.

Montoya kept asking crew chief Brian Pattie if he could pit, but Pattie told him to wait until a caution came out. Montoya didn't have to wait long. He spun out at the entrance of pit road.

His Earnhardt Ganassi crew ended up bolting a piece of red sheet metal over the quarter panel to keep it in some semblance of shape, but that fell off shortly after a restart. Despite assurances from Pattie that things would be fine, Montoya had lost too much ground and finished four laps behind winner Jimmie Johnson.

"We had one of the fastest cars (but) there's not much we can do," Montoya said. "We worked as hard as we could, we did all we thought was possible and here you go. Today the best we could was 35th."

Montoya trails Johnson by 195 points heading into next week's race at Martinsville. And Montoya wasn't the only Chase contender whose title dreams fell by the wayside on a chilly night at the 1.5-mile oval.

Denny Hamlin spent the last week beating himself up after an ill-advised attempt to cut off Montoya on a restart at Auto Club Speedway ended up sending him sliding across the infield and into the pit road barrier. He finished 37th and dropped from sixth to ninth in the points.

___________

It appears to me, ... at least for now,... the other drivers in Nascar will do whatever it takes to keep "a foreigner" and especially Montoya,... from winning "their race/sport".

I like the guy.
I hope he kicks their ass next year.
If this year is any indication...
NEXT YEAR WILL BE EXCITING.

THESE GUYS help one another.

If Juan wins, it will be all of his own doing.
I really think, on the Nascar Track ... it's all those f*kn rednecks vs. 'one nigga'.

I think the authorities that be, as well as the drivers are against him winning.
I HOPE NEXT YEAR HE KICKS THEIR ASSES!
