Re: Salary Certainly employment can be very difficult to come by in Colombia. As for the trustworthiness and work ethic of the men, best not to generalize.

300 dollars a month would be pretty good for the average Colombian. I think the minimum wage is somewhere around $200 or so, and lots and lots of people earn no more than this.

Parate....... Tengo una pregunta para alngmxb3. A Colombiana you know comes to "your" country to look for work twice per year. Exactly where do you live? And what type of visa allows for a Colombian citizen to go to another country to "look" for work?

she says colombia is very she says colombia is very difficult to get work. YES this is true

and that men in colombia are not to be trusted, they lie and do not want to work. Yes, this is true in a majority of cases.

Tell me is this true and what is the average salary a normal person works for in colombia.(can 300 US maintain a family). Average salary, who knows.

$300 per month, yes a Colombian FAMILY can live on this. They will live well in a rural town. There will NOT be much left to spend for clothes, entertainment, or durable goods such as a nice pot. They should NOT have any rent.

Plus: They might be able to save up enough to buy a USED moto. Better yet they will probably have a key holder in their house.

I am not living in a strate 5 or 6, My style is so simple, like so much people here in my status, professional people with Kids in good schools,, I put all of this in my comment because is the situation of people here in general, People that put you can live with $300 dont live in the real life. Pastygringo, Lisa Zee, You know like me how is the real true.

I don't often agree with Rubito but even my foreign ass knows that $300US is a sufficient monthly stipend, depending on your lifestyle. How do I know that? I've lived with a family who survived on not much more than that!!!!! They lived perfectly well.

I normally (Ha, Ha) don't comment 150-200k

I've asked several relatives. The food costs for a family of 4 is about 70 to 80K per week. I'd say the LOW side is $250K per month.

I live in a rural area and there isn't a big food store. Most are produce stands, fruit vendors and a various number of small stores.

Some food, especially the U.S. equivilent of canned or convience food is MUCH HIGHER than the equivilent purchased in the U.S. I don't think this EXPENSIVE food is better, it is worse but time is money.

Colombia Yes, U.S. No If you have more money and less time, get someone to cook it for you!

The reference was to the U.S. Ha,, hire someone to cook in the U.S. No way unless you're well off. Even then they normally eat in restaurants.

Hiring someone to cook and clean is inexpensive in most of South / Latin America. Rural cost of a "domestic" is 150K Pesos per month. Watch someone’s baby while they work, $100K per month. Some domestics work for $80K per month. Kind of explains why grandmothers watch the daughters kids.

This brings up a point. The Rich all have domestics. Three wouldn't be uncommon. Their children have never so much as lifted a finger when it comes to household work.

What is rich on the lower scales ? I know for a fact that one household has a full time (5-1/2 days a week) domestic. They have one child and she has never been required to work. They are both school teachers.

This should become interesting. A guy brings home his wife and not only finds out she knows nothing about housework, misses the domestic and feels she has just moved down one or more levels.

COP rate and prices Ok...now we've got the COP rate (2220 COP = 1 USD). So, what are some prices on items in Colombia? How much to dine out for 2? A shirt? A pair of shoes? A bicycle? (Curiosity only, a prostitute?) What's the age of sex in colombia anyhow? Just wondering about prices of any possibly relevant item. I went to Patzcuaro/Guanajuato this past summer. Things were really cheap there...

Prices from Antioquia (medellin)

Food: anywhere from 6,000/10,000 (both) pesos for almuerzo to 100,000 pesos at a nice fancy restaurant. Generally you'll spend about 25,000 +/-5,000 pesos each for a nice meal with wine.

Shoes: Cheaper than in developed countries, especially if you go to the markets where they don't charge IVA, look at the US prices and knock off $10-20$$$ maybe more.

Shirts: anywhere from 2,000 pesos at a market to 10,000 pesos for a t-shirt to 25,000 pesos for a nice replica of Atletico Nacional jersey. Of course, you can go to Guess and Pepe Jeans etc... and buy the current moda for lots of money too.

Prostitution: never tried, never will. In my opinion, it's a disgraceful thing (waiting for the rant at me for this...)

In general, stuff in Colombia is cheap!

Prices Well, thanks RedMan. I appreciate it. I realized I was thinking of Mexico prices and not Colombian prices and I needed to compare apples to apples. The huge prices in COP form are going to take a while to get accustomed to but I'm sure I'll learn. [DELETED]
I'm still looking forward to visiting Colombia and learning as much as I can before my trip. This site has certainly enlightened me on some things about Colombia....

manINred says on Mar 7, 2007, 17:41:

no problem, a trick is to look at the colombian price and divide it by 2 and knock off 3 zeros, and that's your US price. Example, if you see something for 10,000 pesos, it's 5 bucks, or something that's 200,000 pesos, it's 100 bucks, etc... It took me a few days to get used to, but you'll manage. The damn colombian pesos actually screwed me over because I got to Chile and had no clue what was going on!!!!

And whatever the case, there's plenty of prostitution in Colombia, cheap too probably. I've never heard of buying a girl from a family, that wouldn't fly with anyone i've encountered, but perhaps if you go more rurally that sorta thing happens. I doubt you'd have too much trouble anyway meeting a woman, they're open there and not sexually repressed. Just treat them well and you'll be flying!

Looks like wages went up. Last I checked NYC was still the place with the highest salaries on Earth and here the average family makes $2200-2400USD a month after taxes.

As of 2000, 3.7 million people were employed in New York City, with Manhattan as the main employment center with 55.6% of all jobs.[2] In 2006 the average weekly wage in Manhattan was $1,453, the highest among the 325 largest counties in the United States.

That equals 75,500 per year minus 1040 standard deductions of 5,500 = $70,000. Federal Income Tax = 14,000 or 61,500 take home pay divided by 12 = 5,100 per month after federal tax. Minus another $300 per month for the privledge of living in New York, EQUALS $4,800 TAKE HOME PAY or DOUBLE your highest estimate.

$4,800 per month is MEDIAN (ie: average) For a SINGLE person. Who knows what is possible if they are married and BOTH WORK !!!
