monster steak-Arthur, beat this

This is the monster steak they serve at la cabrera restaurant, $13 USD gets this plus about 8 side dishes.

In a sad attempt to make this somehow related to colombia, Arthur, beat that!

hmmm, what am I doing wrong with these photos?

It's BsAs art, a well known restaurant. We split that 3 ways and I could not eat more than half my portion.

Even the food court steak in Buenos Aires is as good as most Canadian steak houses...

I miss the great steaks of BsAs, the size of your head for $10. Last time I went, though, Sabot (on 25 de Mayo) seemed to be closed :( THAT is a great restaurant.

Maybe long-term porteños get tired of steak, salad with egg, empanadas and provoleta. It would take me years to get tired of eating steak. It is funny that the priciest restaurants serve the same food as the food court places though. Parrillada at Las Brasitas rocks too!

In BsAs I liked Cabañas las lilas (but it was pretty expensive - not rated the best either I hear). Also, liked the dinner at the El Querandi (tango show). El Viejo Almacen (another tango place - mediocre food). So MT votes for Sabot and Pod for La Cabrera. Opinions re: what is the best steak house in Bogota??

Man Tequila says on Jul 23, 2007, 19:44:

Not sure Sabot is still open. I like Cabanas las lilas -- my novia wanted to go there -- great service, atmosphere and food, but not cheap. I even like La Cabelleriza, which is where this pic is from, though Portenos likely consider it touristy and medicore value. It is quite hard to get a poor qualty steak dinner in BsAs... Although I am fond of chimmichurri (chipichipi in Colombia) and salsa criolla, I also like mustard, grilled onions, HP sauce (Í'm pretty sure this differs from salsa hijueputa), horseradish, peppercorns and sea salt, teriyaki sauce, jerk sauce and Bearnaise on steak...

MT - how can you taste the steaks once you've put all that on it? An excellent steak doesn't need anything other than salt and pepper. But a nice bernaise sauce every now and then is a nice treat.

I agree an excellent steak needs nothing. I often eat steak with salt and pepper only. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy some sauce too. I would use mustard OR onions OR hijueputa OR horseradish... The fact steak stands on its own does not preclude a little variety. Besides the steaks in BsAs can be four inches thick, no lie...

The side dishes are good too. Especially the provoleta. It's like barbecued brie, soft and gooey and tasty with bread. Morcilla and chorizo are always good too. Asparagus is good, I like it with butter, or served "tapas" style wrapped in serrano ham...

pad thai and tikka masala...now you are talking....

There's a steak house on 93 that's been open about a year....anyone know it? Damn the name slips my mind...near that tropical cocktails place, several people told me it was the best for steaks (but I didn't go myself, I was all steaked out).

I think "1492" in the Zona T serves a very good steak, nothing like BsAs, but very tasty, tender, cooked properly (no more than med rare). Really great friendly service there too. (that's something you rarely get in BsAs).

I love a good steak, but not every day! What BsAs desperately needs are some more ethnic (mexican, asian) "fast" food places (I don't mean taco bell, but I don't want a formal place either. You know, Wok kind of place).

Some guys I know opened a burrito place here, they are doing very well. I keep telling them they need to open one near me in Palermo.

I miss Argentina.

I hate what Colombian's refer to steaks. I could not find a nice thick steak in Cali, Bogota or Medellin.

Hay, Pod the last time I was Argetina they had this mustard sauce (rich, yellow) that they put on Steaks or Chicken. God that was good. Not sure what it was called. Have any idea?

I also miss the empanadas in the morning. Thanks for the picture, I can not stop from looking at it.

Well everybody: If you want fresh beef, slow wood fire cooked in Colombia - go south from Bogota to Villavicencio. I can't remember the street name, but it is the one that goes to the 7th Brigade and also goes to the Terminal; just outside of town. 9 mil gets you a huge hunk of carne de llano, with potatoes and yucca. There are 3 big roadside pavilion type restaurants to choose from, with about a half dozen smaller ones within a mile. They all skewer basically a quarter of beef, and let that skewer slow cook over an open, wood fire. The meat is so fresh, I have actually seen guys butchering a steer in the morning outside of the restaurant. The downside is it is hotter than hell, there are street dogs around, and the flies can get incredibly thick. I thought I found heaven when I went to eat at one of those places. My wife hates it - because of the stinky street dogs and flies. I will wager that the beef is as good as any other beef in South America. 2.5 hours from Bogota.

BEWARE of gold diggers.

Mostaza is a mustard sauce... sometimes it is just mustard, at the better places it is a mixture of mustard and cream (which is nicer).

Robert Jorge, I would appreciate it greatly if you could find the name of restaurant or the street name because I would like to visit that place one day.
Pretty soon, I'll try to post the best steaks in Bogota.

OK Mopirri. I don't know if this is the actual street name, but the road, "via Puerto Lopez", comes to mind. It is a major road taking you out of Villavo. Just ask any taxi driver to take you to the 7th Brigade. 2 miles before you get to the 7th Brigade, you will see the restaurants on both sides of the road. The best carne de llano restaurant in my opinion is on the corner of the round-a-bout. You can't miss it if you simply ask to go near the 7th Brigade. I think the name was "Cabre Estero."
