hi kat !! depends on how much.... the easiest way, with no questions..is open 5 or 6 bank accounts...with money cards...raise your daily ATM limit to say $2500 usd....then you can hit city bank for 4 million per card per day...so you could pull 24 million a day with 6 cards.... if you needed... its faster than you think...

we still transfer to buy property...but remodel with cards like this...and the ATM raids....hahaha

citibank does charge 10k cop per million....and they give 1 million a pull...so you hit each card 4 times while your in the ATM..

good luck !

Try PayPal....believe it or not it's cheaper than Western Union here in the states. It offers service to and from Colombia.

Thanks saddlespur, we were also wondering about this since we plan to sell our Ecopetrol shares and use the money here in the US. All I was aware of was Western Union but PayPal sounds like a better choice.

Does anybody know how much do Western Union and Pay Pal charge? I've never used these companies to send money so I'm clueless.

Well, in our case we bought the Ecopetrol shares a couple of years ago with their payment plan. Spent like I think $1000 total and now have, depending on the share price and dollar exchange, around $9k. So we want to add that up to our savings and put a downpayment on a house before the share prices go down as many say they will.

Pay Pal it is then, I like the fast(ish) part of it most.

But I think you can withdraw funds FROM a Colombian account TO a foreign account. I think he meant that you can't do transactions if BOTH accounts are in Colombia.

Please correct me if I misunderstood guys.

When I do transfer to USA thru CitiBank, I do need to buy USD from my $ account, I do get a better TRM if the transaction is USD 5 or over, most of the time I do get the lower treatment. :-(

They always ask me if I got or want a USD account.

Moneygram.com gets the money there in 10 minutes and works in both directions, but there are gotchas. From the US to Colombia, the fee is 9.99 for transfers up to 1000., and 2% for transfers over 1000., so the sweet spot is multiple 1000. transfers at an effective fee of 1%. However, the currency conversion never seems to use the TRM...lately there has been around a 2.5% discount to the TRM, although we once received an exchange rate above the TRM...go figure. UK to Colombia seems to be 4%. In the other direction, Colombia to US or UK, the fee is punitive...5% regardless of amount.

Maybe there's a business opportunity here...you could export jam sugar to Colombia and get paid in pounds sterling.

Kat, it really depends on the amount.
The best way is to use a professional money exchange broker. You would get the fastest transfer and better rate.
The are many in Colombia. Pm if you want any details.
