Hey Guys!
My mom wants to send little Xmas gifts with me for a friend's kids in Cartagena (3, 12, 17 are the ages). I do not know want to lug stuff around with me so I'm thinking money in a card. What do you guys think would be an acceptable $$ amount each kid, without being tacky, for a lower/mid income family?

Mononoke28 says on Dec 19, 2008, 07:18: I know you don't want to haul gifts in your suitcases but when you're a child in Colombia and even more so, a teenager, you want to get something from whatever country your family members are coming from. That way you get to show off and brag about it with your friends even if it's just a baseball cap. It's a big deal. Diana 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

They take up almost no space and they'll appreciate it a lot more than cash. I'm so hip, I have difficulty seeing over my pelvis. 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Mononoke28 says on Dec 19, 2008, 07:38: TJ Maxx is THE place to go, I love it, brand names at 50%-75% off. I remember when my dad visited us the first time and my favorite gifts were the little things things he put in a box, a walkman, a Cindy Lauper tape, candy, gum, and fruit flavored chapstick. I didn't care for the bigger gifts, but that little box was just awesome! Diana 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

babygirl says on Dec 19, 2008, 08:21: I tend to agree with you guys on the cool gift from another country part. I was going to hit up the Guess & Tommy Hilfiger outlets. Guess wallet for 17 yr female, Tommy shirt for the 12 yr old boy and the little baby is so easy. I think I just might have to look at taking my larger pack. I hate checking luggage and I had only planned on taking my carry on pack. Best quote of the week... "should I be taking this pill with wine?" Canadian Girls Kick Ass! 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Mononoke28 says on Dec 19, 2008, 08:31: TJ Maxx is a regular store that sells brand name stuff for less. They get the leftovers from other stores and outlets and that's why they are able to reduce the prices. It's like a Ross or Marshall's type of thing but nicer. Diana 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

miamimike says on Dec 19, 2008, 23:56: If you are visiting Miami, check out the Flamengo Plaza in Hialeah! Its the Supercenter Area of Thrift stores! They have the Red, White and Blue Veteran's Thrift store and right next door is the Salvation army thrift store as well as many others. If you cannot find it cheap here, it doesn't exist! A Bogota ladyfriend comes here and buys a ton of used clothing and resells it "as new" in Bogota. She tells me she will KILL me if I ever tell any of her friends she buys used stuff to resell as new in Bogota~ LOL I also taught her how to clean the white&black size and care clothing labels with lighter fluid and a toothbrush to make them look like new(old jewish trick). The lighter fluid also works well on neck and cuff stains in making them look like new to sell or give as gifts to friends and family. I also showed her how to shave the small lintballs off Wool Sweaters with a Lint Razor. I do this with used clothing in prepping it for sale on eBay. Just check ALL the Pockets before you give them away to make sure no $$ Bills are tucked away. :>) No hay Peor Ciego que el que no quiere Ver o Sordo que el que no quiera Oir--Soy Yo, Sarah Palin, Wasilla Alaska. 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

All for about $70 CDN. Now I just have to fit it in my pack. Guess I shouldn't wrap this stuff eh? Best quote of the week... "should I be taking this pill with wine?" Papi de Alejo says on Dec 21, 2008, 05:16: Babygirl, if you can manage it, bring some good quality wrapping paper. It should be real cheap where you are and better by far than anything that is economically available in Colombia. And it will be very much apreciated there. Live simply... Love generously...
