I know that mona generally means blond in Colombian slang, however I have seen time after time that women with fairer skin however with all the other dark features typical of a Latin American woman are still called "mona". Why is that? I am confused.
Just curious.
I attached a pic of Milena a friend of mine who is often called "mona" as well as one of myself. (second) and a family member of a friend-the third one.

bufalo says on Jul 26, 2007, 18:04: I noticed the same, things tend not to be so "black and white" like in the states and other parts (what a relief that is). It seems if someone even has a hint of blondish hair or light skin, then they are "mona". jaramillo says on Jul 26, 2007, 18:42: Negro, negrito, or mono, etc., do not necessarily have racial connotations. Mono, in parts of Antioquia, can be used to call a kid "Hey mono, ven acá". You can call your blond, green eyed girlfriend, "negra" or "negrita" if it pleases you. I've seen it countless times. The same with "negro" for a friend, regardless of race. In Medallo, "Qiuvo negro" doesn't mean you're greeting someone dark.

Cerealkiller says on Jul 27, 2007, 03:58: Well because "mona" in Bogota is used to refer to blonde or light haired people. It doesnt have to do with the color of your skin, if youre not blonde then youre not mona even if you have snow white skin. Although I have been called mona many times and im a redhead... ColombianoGringo says on Jul 27, 2007, 10:10: I agree with CK and billyb. In Colombia(at least cacjhaco Colombia) mona is usually used to refer to light complected, blond women although bleach blondes seem to count. None of the women in the pics would be considered mona. The word mono/mona can also be used to signify cute, but when someone is refered to as "esa mona" or "la mona", it is usually a reference to hair and skin color.
