Mompox (sp?), been there?

I was reading about this town that is a UNESCO world heritage site on the Magdalena river. It sounds realllllllllly isolated and hard to get to. Has anyone been? how did you get there, and what was the journey like? What were your impressions of it. I pretty much want a reaally slow cheap place to relax and write, and would be going alone. What were the people in the area like? Did you feel welcomed? It doesn't sound like many people make it out that way

Mompox Yes, you spelled it correctly. The one and only time I went to Mompox was in 2000. It is isolated, and not as easy to get to as other places, but definitely worth the trip. We took our car, but eventually, you have to cross the river (I think it was the Magdalena, if I recall correctly) on a ferry. The ferry ride is about an hour long, and then, once you are over the river, it's not that far away. I thought it was a pretty place to visit, and if relaxation is what you're looking for, you'll find it there. It is a hot spot for tourists, but mostly during Semana Santa, really. It has a lot of churches, and if memory serves me correctly, I think Simon Bolivar was there on a few occasions back in the day. The hotels are small, clean and very affordable. The center of town is very picturesque and there are maybe one or two really good restaurants. I liked it there a lot, and hope to go back someday. If you go, you absolutely must try the cheese!!! It is out of this world...don't go crazy, though...it tends to mess with your system. The people are nice, they seem to like the tourists. One thing though; Mompox is HOT!!!!! Make sure you get a hotel with air conditioning.

Good luck and have fun!!!!

kikolina0920 ... covered it very adequately. I made the trip about the same time and you do cross the Magdalena. If you are into colonial architecture it is worth the trip. HOT as hell and overnight is enough, IMHO..
