Missing US Passport

Should your passport be lost or stolen while in Colombia, here are the procedures you must follow.

File a "denuncia" with the Department Police and get a copy.
Take that copy to DAS and get it registered and stamped.
Call the nearest US Consulate, or if in Bogotá, go to the embassy.

You will have to go to Bogotá to get a new passport. The process takes one day, and goes much smoother if you already have new passport photos and a photo copy of your old passport. The US Embassy will accept you at 8:30 am Monday through Thursday at the American Citizens Service Gate (located on the right side of the complex as you face the Embassy.)
Your first process will be to fill out the application and pay $97 for the new document. Then you will be instructed to return at 3pm to get the new passport.

Most importantly...even though you now have your new passport, the DAS most likely has no record of your arrival date in Colombia, and that is a big problem. Make sure to show up for you departure flight very early with the copy of your denuncia and be ready to explain to the DAS supervisor EN ESPANOL what happened. Most likely he will have to call the airport where you entered the country to confirm with that DAS office that you entered legally. The confirmation phone call determines if you can leave Colombia or not.

If and when you return to Colombia, make sure to have the number of your old passport, a copy of the denuncia, and a good attitude.

Claro Kat I had a great time, even though my passport se fue. It was a very intense experience that created many problems, but at least I did not have to go on vacation con Mono JoJo.
