I've always wanted to go play tejo but my cousins say I shouldn't even go because it's not for "ladies". Same thing goes when I want to play pool. The only time I did it was in that shopping mall in El Poblado that has the pool tables and bowling alleys. =\

But seriously, I played tejo with girls. I actually double dated with my wife, and her prima and one of my buddies. Some of the tejo clubs are pretty male dominated though.

Mine occurred in December. After repeated pleadings of "please take me to a tejo place" my friends found one in a not-very-nice area of Bogota. We bought the obligatory beers (15 or 20, I think...the owner gave us a break from the normal requirement of 30 because I was a Gringo, it wasn't very busy yet, and we were only going to be there for a short time). It took a while, but with sufficient lubrication I finally scored. It was one of the greatest moments of my life -- and I still have the little red paper triangle to prove it.

I digress, but to answer your question: Yes, there were a fair number of women in the place, and a few of them were playing the big boys' game rather than the half-length or kiddie length version. Also, there are at least three different sizes of metal disks, so use whatever feels most comfortable.

Tejo is similar to horseshoes - sort of. Socially, very similar. Bowling might also be comparable. It is a working man's sport. Drinking is literally required though. Generally, the purchase of a case, or a half case (30 or 15) of beer is expected.

The size of the tejos are a diverse as bowling balls. They all have the same basic shape, but come in all sizes and weights. An average tejo probably weighs about 2 pounds, more or less.The smaller version of tejo is called simply "mini-tejo". It is much more family friendly - for obvious reasons, and the tejos used in mini-tejo are proportionally smaller than the big boys version. I like playing mini-tejo more than the regular tejo. It isn't as embarrassing, nor as dangerous, if you miss the stop / clay.
