Minicipio de "RIONEGRO" "Colombia"

I would like to know how many of you have taken the bus to "RIONEGRO" from Medellin.
This is a very beautiful area, and the weather is the best; all year round in the 70`s.
Rionegro is becoming a party town on the area of Llano Grande.
I want to tell you that "RIONGRO" IS ONE WORD, not two.
Just like it is Colombia and not Columbia, It is Rionegro and not Rio Negro. Just look at the buses and busetas.
This is just a friendly observation.

But, I'm going to start making some assumptions here.... Which means I might actually end up making an ass out of myself ..........Thu 04 17, 2008 11:34 am

Hahahahahaha, funny right! jajajajajajajaja.

Robert Jorge says on Oct 17, 2007, 01:51:

Lisa, it is ironic, therefore funny, when somebody corrects another person's spelling, and then misspells the word in the very sentence that they are pointing out the correct spelling.

Brians says on Oct 17, 2007, 04:43:

RJ she spelled it wrong in her first quote. Anyway yes Lisa I love it there. I actually went there my very first Sunday in Medellin years ago. It was just such a neat place to hang out. The ride from Medellin is beautiful and the climate is perfect. There are some new massive fincas and real estate there has skyrocketed. My wife's family has a Finca in Santa Fe so we we thinking of getting on in Rionegro. I have been waiting for the prices to either fall or peso to fall and as of yet no luck.

if you're visiting rionegro on fri or sat, be sure and check out san antonio (two words) it's a great party place. nice folks, nice atmosphere, etc. it's on the side of rionegro where you enter from llano grande,, where you turn to enter rionegro at the end of tutucan. also, very close in is carmen de viboral. there's a wonderful catholic school where the priests have started a weaving program, producing the finest rugs, throws, etc. avail anywhere. carpets and textiles were my business for near 40 years and i couldn't recommend these products more. the prices are great and the quality is unsurpassed. give it a check.

come christmas, por venir, the edge of rio negro on the way to the airport, hosts a candle exhibition the likes of which i've never seen. it's candles burning in paper bags like they do in sante fe new mexico, yet on a scale unimaginable. truly one of the great surprises of colombia. there are literally millions of candles burning. i couldn't recommend this distraction more. about a week-ten days before navidad is the best. por venir on 'normal' days, is a not-much-to-mention place, however, it's christmas candle exhibition is world class and an event that one will remember all their life.

rionegro, itself, is a nice pueblo/city, but really not much on a cultural level. i do, however, recommend visiting the mercado...the way the vendors display their fruits and vegis is really nice. also, surrounding the mercado are funky bars and 'working girls' there to service the truck and chiva (bus/trucks) drivers. prices are cheap. not like lleras. jeje

As it turns out, the official name of the municipality is "Santiago de Arma de Rionegro". So I guess the delectable Lisa Zee is correct. Here is the town government's web site: http://www.rionegro.gov.co/

dwmte7 says on Oct 20, 2007, 06:25:

umpteen years ago....my wife and i were up in rio negro.....whoops!, rionegro, after having spent about a week at a 'hip' retreat behind the airport. kinda like a very small gaviotas where they have seminars, eco walks, wholesome food, self exploration, an observatory, as well as much more. clearly, especially in this epoch, a get away for the rich. it's still there and if the cost 20 years ago is any reliable indicator, it's through the roof now. kind of a 'green' campestre. anyway, when we were back in rionegro, we ate at a restaurant located on the second floor of a building which faces the park. if you're standing in front of the church, it's on the left side of the park. it's still there. the foods good, the meseros are as old as me and they allowed my wife, the dominitrix of decorating to take over and rearrange everything. she's one of the loveliest, most opionated people you could ever meet in your life. she has an opinion on things she's never even heard about. all that aside. it was that day, in that restaurant, that i proposed. fitting, since she was a couple of months pregnant.

we went straight away to the parochia of the church, and solicited an audience with the priest, as it is a tradition in my family, on such an occassion, to make a declaration of intent infront of a priest as to the direction that one's life is about to take. he wasn't el sacerdote superior, rather much younger, but honored to have been chosen, to preside over this solemn tradition--albiet new to him--and in small spiritual way, become a part of our lives.

make note, that i wasn't in the least interested in getting married or even in having a relationship, as previously in my life, i had proven to be a complete failure at marriage/relationships because of my predisposition to daliance. i confess, and looking back, i do so not with pride, that lust was my weakness. i was a horn-dog, a hardon looking for a place to express itself. and as in so many other areas of my life, my grandfather had pointed out to me, "....son, a stiff dick got no conscience.' aint that the truth.

well, that was twenty years ago, my wife was 35, and until i came along, a virgin;; what could i do? i was forced into the corner of 'honor' that is unless i just wanted to be a prick and split. that, at my age, i couldn't do, so, eating the fruits of my own conduct, i married stella, a couple of months later at a tiny adobe church in las flores, envigado. it's called santa barbara. it's a replica of a 16th century church built by the spanish priests.

what happens next in my life was fodder for mental suicide. but that's a whole other, very long story........ i might suggest to you young fellas, put a slicker on the shlonk, and don't get cought with your 'third' eye in your drawers. or, you might get caught in the honor/prick delima, where choices aint easy and the results are definitely not cut and dried, and can easily last the rest of your days.

That is very interesting and lovely story. You have a very good sense of humor.
I am curious to know if you think that the difference in cultures is one of the biggest problems in a relationship with a N. American and a Colombian, even if they are intellectually comparable?

john_stark says on Oct 20, 2007, 10:45:

Damm, DW, some of it has to have been good.

Robert Jorge says on Oct 20, 2007, 11:18:

LMAO ....that's the first time I used that combo of letters. It does mean "laughing my ass off" , correct?

Very good story dwmte7. I look forward to someday meeting you and having that drink and chit-chatting. I have a lot to learn from worn-out old war babies like yourself. I guess you could call my parents war babies too. My dad was born in the Saarland in 1938. Mom in Detroit in '42. I'll have to ask her about the time stamp on her birth certificate.

dwmte7 says on Oct 20, 2007, 11:24:

i never said it wasn't good...nor did i say it was bad...rather, a real bitch at times. my lady is absolutely wonderful, a good wife, hard working, frugal, diligent and DEMANDING. is it a difference in cultures, sure, the opionionated and the open minded. i'm easy going, take it as it comes, and mom is so full of oppinions that some times it's hard to keep track of what exactly is her present posture.

do i love her, oh yes, deeply, i'm so devoted. it was she who changed my ways...or rather made me want to change my ways. it's because she is who she is that i don't go out with other ladies, and that, my friends, is a first in my dalient life.

i think problems arise when people aren't willing to agree to disagree. latina, gringa, china, russo, italian, irani, no matter where one is from...if folks aren't willing to meet in the middle of the bridge, sooner or later, there will be conflict. ours started early on. here it is near 20 years later and mom still wont speak english. we speak spanish at home. pity, especially when were living on this side. it's she who suffers. there, no problem. i speak either with the same indifference. i tried, in the beginning to get her to come half way across the bridge but that was to no avail. i just got tired of the warfare and since i learned spanish, you might say she won. but there's no more war in my house, and my daughter has both of her parents under the same roof.

This is a nice success story, the younger PBHs should come to you for advise
I like to hear a man talking like that about his wife. Well you sure did well with the cultural difference, I find it a huge barrier, even I have lived here for over 20 years, it causes many problems. Hence I keep insulting people without knowing it, and I could go on.
I remember Rionegro on Sundays when it had the farmer`s market in the plaza. I used to get car sick from all those curves, and the funny thing is that I still get car sick, this is why I only went to Medellin like 3 times in 8 weeks that I was there, this summer.

Without going into details, I just hope she's giving you copious amounts of you-know-what.

dwmte7 says on Oct 20, 2007, 20:01:

to be stark, john....i'll leave those details to the memoirs of the fates i.e klothos, atropos and lakisis...they know what i need and don't need...however, i might add that it appears that i had far more than my share in my most cavalier, reckless youth and from all appearances, they tend to err on the side of minamalism (sp)

damn, friends, that's stiff measure. to get me off on all we waded through over the years is gonna press me hard. i have a propensity for frankness and not concealing the rude truth. that means i'd have to pull down my drawers and lay it all bare. not sure that i'm ready, quite yet, to step out on them waters. bare in mind, that i, like you, don't walk on the water, rather must wade through it....sometimes it gets way over our heads. now given all that went down, that's no petty trudge. you'll have to pester me a bit to get me to muster up the guts. im not saying i wont, but i'm wide of feeling comfortable at steping out on that journey.

goin down, er, south...ya'know, i'm not sure that as folks get up in the years, the forgetfulness that seems to be concomitant with that gain is a result of using Al's Heimers... it's just that--i've discovered in myself--one just get's tired of shleppin around all that mental baggage that in earlier times seemed alright or necessary or a sign of education/intelligence or what ever. now, my daughter says, "daddy, you don't remember" i remind her, "no sweetie, i choose not to." I think the human being can store more rubbish in the mind than can be put in a 40' ocean container. and that's just the worthless crap. the important stuff seems to take up the universe.

as for the movie, hadn't heard of it other than seeing notes in the thread headlines that mentioned the name. i didn't open any of them, as i knew nothing about it. something like the thread about "bra sizes". not to up on that so i haven't gone there. all i know about bra sizes is one works on a large gal and another on a small gal. not much more.

i must admit that there's a number of movies higher on the list of 'wanna sees' than 'cholera' especially since it's opras' favorite....allow me to assure you, being her favorite, is by no means indicative that it is mine.
