Bogota, April 6: A middle-ranking leader of Left-wing insurgent group Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) has been killed in an operation by the security forces in central-western province of Caldas, Spain's EFE news agency reported.
Edinson Aldemar Montoya Arenas, alias El Pollo, was killed Saturday during an army operation in El Vergel, some 200 km northwest of Bogota.
A pistol, two grenades and several rounds of ammunition were retrieved from the slain guerrilla.
According to officials, Montoya Arenas was the mastermind behind several abductions and extortions.
"The insurgent, killed in the combat, was in charge of the group's extortion network. He was involved in kidnappings and drug trafficking," an army spokesman said.
The FARC has been designated as a terrorist organisation by the US and the European Union.
