Middle class Colombians and their great love for all that’s American.

I’m looking at the names of these clubs (BELOW) in north Barranquilla and noticed that many have English names. Froggs Leggs, 7 Eleven, Beer Company (used to be Mundo de Cerveza) Underground, and Privilege, how fokin pretentious is that?
What’s with middle/wealthy Colombians and their lack of fokin pride. And this chit is worst in Bogotá, Cali and Medellin.
Listen, I love New York City, but you will never see me wear a NYC T-shirt in Barranquilla, I'll wear that chit in Miami, but never in curramba.

Plus: I noticed a NEW Coldwell Banker office in the NEW office building across from the NEW exito and NEW central shopping mall, La Victoria in Pereira.

While the barranquilleros from estrato 3 and below only go to clubs with local name, such as “corroncho hijueputa, MamaGallo, and CaraMonda etc. cus they believe any club with English names only play musica de marica.

Odds are that the Toyota is made in the U.S. Toyota has these plants in the U.S.

This is an old list so maybe there are more today? Probably not less.

Buffalo, W. Va.; a power-train production plant;

Fremont, Calif.; a joint-venture assembly plant, New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., which is co-owned with General Motors

Georgetown, Ky.; two assembly plants;

Princeton, Ind.; an assembly plant; and St. Louis and Troy, Mo.

Huntsville, Ala., engine plant.

Toyota (Hilux) has an assembly plant in Colombia but new cars cost more ?? Maybe it's the taxes??

Interesting isn't it,, no plants in Michigan and I'd bet NEVER in N.Y.. I believe Toyota was looking for workers that WORKED. What a concept !!!

Sweden does not believe in services? This does not seem correct. Which leads me to believe the term "services" does not have the same meaning. I'm being kind here.

Let's see what the CIA fact book has to say about Swedish Servies.

GDP - composition by sector:
agriculture: 1.1%
industry: 28.1%
services: 70.9% (2006 est.)

OH MY GOSH,, almost 71%

Elmo, this is right on topic for me. I was on Rodadero beach in Santa Marta yesterday afternoon, chilling, and got to thinking about what you would make of it.

We all sat down in beach chairs, and the soundtrack coming into my right ear from the nearest bar was 70's and 80's easy listening. Nothing but English language. Kenny fokin Rogers, John Lennon, Bryan fokin Adams and the king of easy listening himself, Mr Phil Collins.

So I think you exaggerate the "musical purity" of the coast. Like any city in Colombia, it depends which part of town you're in.

At the same time, there was a viejo circulating on the beach who would sing impromptu while selling those musical shaker things. This old guy had most of his own teeth and skin like leather from being out in the sun. He was a born performer and could make everyone in the group laugh with his antics. If things got desperate, you always had the option to call him over to drown out the easy listening music for a short while.

Getting back to the OP - liking things with foreign names doesn't automatically insinuate lack-of-pride. Indeed, I see being upset about people liking things with foreign names as being far worse than liking things with foreign names. Throwing a temper-tantrum because people from your country like things that are not from your country reeks of a strong sense of insecurity, to me, at least.

When was the last time you heard an English/US guy bitch about the word "fiesta" or "patio" existing in the English language? Or of "tardy" meaning "late"? Or of "kindergarten"?

Desi-I certainly would agree with you on the Cell Phones (nokia). My Logger friends in the Pennsylvania swear by Swedish Stihl Chain Saws as the cadillac of Chain Saws. On the cars, I've owned 6 Volvos in my Lifetime(currently one of my Cars is a 740 Volvo Wagon). All great cars and soooo easy to work on if they do need work. Not the same story with my VW Diesel New Beetle. That Diesel beetle is a mechanic's Nightmare when it does require engine work due to it being so compacted. Which is less trouble free Rubito, a Mercedes or a Volvo? I've only owned pre-1993 Volvos with the legendary B230 Red 4 cylinder Motors(the Best ever) and my 2 two Mercedes were both pre 83. I was fussy about the maintenence in both makes and all went over 100,000 miles with NO problems. My current Volvo wagon(1989) has 244,000 miles on it, compression not much different then the day it was made.
I read where an Egyptian Taxi Driver logged in over 1,000,000 miles on his 1983 (?)Mercedes 300 Turbo Diesel, quite a feat anywhere in the world as City Taxi Use is classified as "Extreme" Use so its quite a testament to a motor/Car that logs this Mileage. Still, the All Time High Mileage King Worldwide is Irv Gordon who has logged 2,500,000 Miles(verified by Volvo) on his little Red 1966 P1800 Volvo; he had it in Miami at the Volvo Ocean races two years ago and I saw it; hard to belive its condition AND the fact some of the Moving Engine Components were still ORIGINAL and functioning perfectly. Talk about over-engineered,,, More On Irv and his P1800 Volvo:

"Gordon hit 500,000 miles in the late '70s"---had to laugh at a Statement Irv Gordon made in Miami when he was here for the Volvo Ocean Open races and he was meeting with Area Volvo Fans, he stated "I knew I had a special car that day when the Odometer turned over at 500K miles" I guess he had good reason indeed for that comment,,,LOL

Rubito, I partly concur with you.

That stale Iberic mentality of caste, nobility and race has dominated us for centuries.

Colombian society is still trudging its feet because it is wearing the shackles of Spanish colonialism. "El grito de independencia" was nothing but a cry to keep following the ways of the spaniards albeit as a new nation (read: keep f**ing ourselves in the spanish tradition). It was a half assed independence if you ask me.

We will never be colombians until we stop clinging to whatever few drops of spanish blood we have coarsing through our veins to feel worthwhile. Until we develop a backbone, we will have Hollywood putting a huge mirror to our collective faces and telling us what we are.

Colombia will never really be a "free" nation until we accept ourselves as we are and stop looking for outside answers to our internal turmoil.

But here is where I disagree with you. The skinhead phenomenon Bogota has very little to do with spanish colonialism, and more to do with a bunch of disillusioned young punks looking for something to emulate. I have never bothered to investigate the skinhead culture, but I do know it does not hail from the Iberic peninsula (after all Europe stops at the Pyrenees LOL). It strikes me more as an anglosaxon/northern/recessive gene European phenomenon that has absolutely NO place in our criollo society.

Colombia for better or worse inherited a lot of the Spanish mentality of old, and is still struggling with that. I would see those groups of racist fuckers as simply a symptom of the old colonial mentality which hasn't quite died yet!"

Alright, here we go. I disagree with the skinheads "belonging in Colombia as anywhere else" argument because Colombia, as Colombiche already mentioned, is predominantly a mestizo nation (80% non-white). Therefore the existence of these hate groups that promote racial purity here is absolutely ridiculous. I understand why such groups would rise in mainly caucasian societies such as Germany or the US, where many whites feel threatened by the increasing minority populations, but not in Chibchombia because whites are the minorities here!! And the Spanish colonial mentality does not correspond with the agenda of these racists, remember, the Spaniards actually mixed with the indigenous population since they did not bring over many women.

I doubt the skinheads in Colombia have anything to do with the original ideology of those groups in Europe. It's just another excuse for a bunch of kids to hang out together and cause trouble, and to differentiate themselves from (and compete with) all the other troublemaker groups out there. Something that El Tiempo has pointed out is a growing phenomenon in Bog. I like to call these hooligans "baby FARCs" Theme and Variations. . . it's the same problem that has always held back Colombia, just at a smaller local scale. . .

By the way, on my last day in Bog, which was yesterday, some teenaged girl tried to pick my back pocket (I never put anything back there anyway). I just looked at her and she giggled a bit and walked off. This was on Cra 15 and 80 near the Unilago in the late afternoon where there's a lot of pedestrian movement at that time of the day. Truth to tell, I didn't feel comfortable from the get-go waiting for my date in that area (it was her brilliant idea). I must have had the "papaya" look because frankly on last days, my mind is more on the flight home and the J-O-B than on dealing with the right-now, something which has admittedly tripped me up in the past.

My Bog trip was nice and although some people will insist the city is safer, I don't feel it's safe enough for my taste. I think Medellin is safer. I will leave Bog to GIB and all the other bad-asses who want to play there. :-))

I read the article of the skinheads in Bogota who stabbed some musician outside Gotica. I agree with Simon and Colombiche, I dont think it has to do with european colonialism, I just dont see how they could be related.

I read an article in El Tiempo a couple of months ago on names such as Leidy, Jennifer or Jessica and how english names in Colombia are usually given to children from poorly skilled backgrounds. Some employers dont even bother interviewing people with such names because they feel these names are not contributing to the company's prestige. And it has gotten to such a point that if your name is jessica and make a phone call to an office, chances are you are less likely to get through the person you asked for, than someone with a less "exotic" name.

They walk around in cloud nine.
Listen, I travel both Colombian worlds, I know what the fok I’m talking about; I have families in both sides. The “well off‿ Colombians take their kids to MacDonald’s or just order from Pizza Hut and their kids run around on skateboards and go to pricy clubs such as froggs leggs, 7 eleven and the underground etc. When they’re not in upscale clubs they’re home in their computers lurking around to snatch a gringo just like aunt Conchita did; now living over seas and demonstrating next to her gringo husband against undocumented Mexican workers.
Poor girls have no access to internet and many have no desire or a way to pick up gringos or will ever come into contact with one during the course of her daily activities so they’re happy with Wilson (bus driver) and his 12 inches.
Poor kids don’t go to MacDonald, they barely have enough for a fokin empanada never mind the 9 mil for a happy fokin meal .
Skateboards??? jajajaj if they happened to find one laying around in front of some nice building in north Barranquilla, where the fok are they’re gonna skate, they aint got no paved street or fokin sidewalk and if they do have sidewalk and a paved street there’re gonna bust their bony ass in one of the many pot hole.

I thought 'charro' was known over all of Colombia, and indeed commonplace as a proper Spanish word!

I guess it's just a paisa term. It basically means 'funny', as in amusing or also as in strange/odd, like it does in English. When I used the word 'fastidioso' to a Mexican, she didn't understand me, she asked if it meant something that it didn't (like cansado) and I have no idea why she didn't understand it. Perhaps it only means 'annoying' to paisas/colombianos?

'De pronto' also isn't used interchangeably with 'tal vez' everywhere in Latin America.

Morphus, I don't go to it but I do see the effects of McDonalds and similar entities in society everywhere I go: of people who have no attention span, are grumpy, cronically obese etc... and the repercussions of this affect me directly.
