miami layover

Some quesions for you Miami residents.

I've got an 8 hour layover in miami this sunday. Having never spent any time there, I'd like to look around a little instead of wandering around the airport. Any recomendations on places that are 1. easy and quick to get to, and 2. worth visiting on a Sunday morning/afternoon.

(It looks like the "J" bus runs from the airport to south beach. Can anyone confirm this?)

i recomend south beach you should go to south beach, its not too far...i would say take a cab, but it'll probably cost you around 20 dollars each way. You dont have that much time to wait on the Miami-Dade transit system, not very reliable. If the day is nice, south beach will be full of people and beautiful girls!

those "beautiful" girls in sobe wont give you the time of the day.in colombia they will.

and you can eat here too I am opening the Starlite Café this week and will offer PBH members special discounts. Check this thread for more info:

Starlite Café

I wouldn't say the girls don't give you a good time here ... I have to disagree.

Go to Bayside outdoor mall. There is usually live music and lots of things to see. I've killed hours there on long layovers, usually overnighters where we go there until 4am and thenback to the airport to check in for the flight. It is $20 cab ride from the airport to there. There was a luggage check in / guarding at miami as well.

South Beach Amen Arthur Brode, the women of south beach are beautiful, and all kinds, but they won't give you the time of day.
When I went to Barranquilla, the women come up to you in the pool and ask what is your name, and when they get out of the water, they are hot, even women 40 years old are hot as a firecracker, and will have a nice time with you.

Lionheart says on Feb 21, 2006, 19:40:

Depends where you go I agree, a layover isn't time enough to integrate. If you stay longer and do the clubbing scene you will have success if you try. There are locations for each age group. Plus the scenes wanders to new locations every few months. When you are here I can find out what is in and what is out. But chances are good by just sitting around in the street cafés and strolling up and down Ocean Drive in the evening. Mangos and Cleavelander are good places to find company.

Springbreak season is starting soon, enough drunken meat for both genders available then. It will get wild.

How true Mr. Brode....how true "those "beautiful" girls in sobe wont give you the time of the day. In colombia they will."

No debate here

Hey Lionheart... Listen - I live in the Grove, and I rarely venture to South Beach. I mean I love the glamour... Espanola Way, Lincoln Road... but the truth is, I HATE SOBE clubs.

I absolutely refuse to wait in line with a bunch of kids while some punk of a bounser decides whether I'm "cool enough" to get inside his techno club and pay $12 for house liquor while listening to crappy music.

That's usually my experience when friends invite me out in SOBE, so I don't go much.

I don't mind a cover - I just want to be greeted with a smile and treated like a customer. I love 80's, or 90's music, and best of all live music. I'd like to hear it played at a volume which doesn't make every attempt at conversation a shouting match. I'd like to hang out with the young thirties crowd.

You sound like a grownup who knows the track. Could you give me more recommendations?

also Don't forget to go down the road in front of the beach and admire the beautiful renovated art deco houses, also the harbour was full of huge cruise ships which I had never seen before and looking at the private yachts was fun as well. The harbour is on the way to South Beach, on the way back to the airport a look around calle ocho the Cuban quarter might be interesting although this is something that I didn't do. There are plenty of taxis so don't worry about how to get back to the airport which isn't far away.
As stated above there is a left luggage facility at the airport.

michaelz says on Feb 22, 2006, 06:17:

Thanks all.. for the info. Guess I'll try South Beach, just to see what I can see. I'll look for the Starlight and the Bayside Mall.

Lionheart says on Feb 22, 2006, 07:17:

Art Deco and clubbing The Starlite is in the middle of the Art Deco hotels on Ocean Drive, the road in front of the beach. You also have the best view of the cruise ships from here, when they sit in the harbor they are quite boring. When they leave at sundown, mainly Fridays and Sundays, they leave in a procession and pass SoBe, all lit up and glamerous, a nice sight.

I don't do the clubs, when they start I go to bed, I can't go there from midnaight to 6am, for example, I have to work, plus I hate the music style, the loudness, and the intoxicated kids. I usually go to a sports bar or one of the pubs, where many locals hang out. It is easy to get into the clubs if you get a pass from the promoters handing out invitation cards on the streets. I think you pay them the cover charge, then you get the pass, and you are let in if you look and behave decent, i.e. you are not drunk or stoned on arrival.

Try Little Havana !! Take a City Bus to save $$, cost like $1.50 from the Airport and take a walk from 8th ave to 32 ave on Calle Ocho. Go to the Versailles(very nice) or La Carreta Restuarant. The Versailles is where Bush, Clinton, Kerry, Reagen all come(or came to) when they make(or made) the Miami Political Vote tour! This area is MIAMI. in a few weeks, the World Famous Festival "Calle Ocho" will take place there-that's a Vacation in itself!!! There are typical Cuban, Mexican, Hondran, Dominican, Argentine, Colombian, El Salvador ect Restaurants and ARE NOT Tourist traps. Everyone knows where they are once you get there. You'll feel like you are in Havana, Cuba. There probably will be some Cigar Stores open where they Hand-Roll your Cigars. You may want to visit "Domino Park" on calle 8 where the playing starts early in the day! Also various stores sell nice Guayabreras(the typical cuban shirt)During the Day, this is a safe area. No Problem. The Cuban Chicas are HOT! One of my favorite clubs is located there "Cuba como Ayer" ! On SW 12 ave, just a few blocks south of Calle Ocho is the Colombian Restaurant, "Monserrate" also very nice! Very Good Ajiaco is served there on Sunday. Good Luck, it all depends if you want to see the Natives on Calle 8 or the Tourist trap they call South Beach! Takes LOTS of $$$$ if you go to south beach! haha

MIAMI LAYOVER!!!!! - Calle Ocho, (Little Havana)
-(Bayside Shopping) - Miami
- South Beach, (Miami Beach)

Good places, just that a layover isnt much time to enjoy them. Prob, 1 hr to get to you destination. 4 hrs of fun. 1 hr back to airport. 2 hrs wait?

Bayside and South Beach I recommend the most.

Atrevido says on Feb 26, 2006, 03:21:

Natural History Museum? Does Miami have a natural history museum or botanical garden and is it/are they far from the airport?

SiempreHero says on Feb 26, 2006, 08:11:

So Be and Clubs For a layover, check out SOBE. You wont be there to find a girlfriend anyway. I agree with all the above comments regarding giving the clubs and the scene. I dont have to wait in lines, since i work in the music industry, when i go, i go with cool girls and party like a rock star, but you know what? After you do that 3 times in SOBE you get bored. I would gladly give up the SOBE scene, for the nightlife in any major city in Colombia. I would give up any night out in SOBE for a good colombian breakfast with friends. SOBE is a great place to visit, but for me, thats about it.

Lionheart says on Feb 26, 2006, 08:16:

colombian breakfast ? Tell me more, I am curious ...

We are going to be serving breakfast all day long, so I am very interested in finding specialties to do ... why not offer a Colombian breakfast?

Christian88 says on Feb 28, 2006, 19:28:

Colombian breakfast? ... I thought the definition of this was scrambled eggs with sliced up hot dogs mixed in?
