Miami Jewel Theft Industry Link to the Mythical Andean School of the 7 Bells

Quite an Interesting Article in our Local Miami New Times Paper today concerning this Industry. According to the paper its pretty widespread and Thriving. Its a dangerous profession, Jewel/jewelry salesman/woman as I have a friend who engages in this type of work selling Colombian 18K Gold Jewelry as well as emeralds brought in from Bogota. Take a few minutes to read the whole article as its extremely interesting. I've herad 3-5 of these Jewel Thefts here in Miami the last few years but i happens much more. A lot of the cases go unreported out of fear and the fact some of the sellers are undocumented and work under the table.

"Former Miami-Dade Police Det. Jeff Frau worked pickpocket and distraction thefts at Miami International Airport for some 20 years. Each day he'd comb the terminals for crooks. Legend has it that some had been educated at the School of Seven Bells — a training camp said to exist somewhere in the misty reaches of the Andes Mountains near Bogotá. The academy supposedly creates a class of thieves with preternatural finesse. The final exam — according to lore — is to remove valuables from seven pockets on a mannequin booby-trapped with seven bells. A slight tinkle of a bell and, like Fagin's student pickpockets in Oliver Twist, the student flunks"'''

What did you think of the Article?

On Sept 17, 2008: Senator John McCain said, as he had many times before, that he believed the fundamentals of the economy were "strong."Hours later he backpedaled, explaining that he had meant that American workers were Strong.

Mike....I think the article, like many of the articles you post, sheds light on the pervasive crime in Miami. I enjoy reading your articles. I think the majority of people in the United States have no idea how bad of a problem the crime is in Miami.

Miami is the epicenter for many crimes in the US like fraud (mortgage, medicare...), drug smuggling, illegal immigration, government corruption, etc. Cuban, Jamaican, Haitian, and other criminal organization rob the Federal Gov't everyday, and Americans seem to be content paying for this.

I understand that the premise of the article is the organized Colombian Jewel thieves, but the message that I received from the article - Miami is haven for crminals. I am glad, as are most of the readers of the Herald, that this man pulled out a Luger and managed to kill at least one of the robbers. I only wish he would have pulled out an Uzi and killed them all.

People if the jewelery business are trying to make a dollar like everyone else. You can't count on the Miami-Dade Police or the City of Miami Police to do provide a safe environment in Miami. If anyone ever wants to get together and do an expose on the corruption on South Florida, I would love to be involved.

On south florida corruption, we are known as the Medicare Fraud Capital of the USA. This is an Investigation that recently broke and is ongoing. It has been going on for years and even though Constituents complained to their Congress Persons(illena ros Lehtinen(R-miami, Lincoln and Mario Diaz Balart-R-Miami) the cries for action went unheeded. Now 36 people were busted on this multi million Dollar scam, half already blew out of the country and went back to Cuba with their scam Money. And the Politicians knew about this--How could they Not know?? Trouble was they(scammers) were on the right side of Politics and no one from Washington to Miami wanted to act and offend their Cuban voting bloc.. Meanwhile the American taxpayers have been fleeced. Hopefully in the oncoming election, some of these Congress Reps here will be voted out and elect people who represent all natioanalities not just Cubans.

Mike....Do you remember Illena Ros Lehtinen (R-Miami) called for the assassination of Fidel Castro? This, of course, is in direct violation of International Law. She denied whole thing, even after reporters showed video of her clearly making the statements. Proven liar.

Some of my favorites are Johnny Winton, former Commissioner for the City of Miami, and the Mayor of the City of Miami, Manny Diaz. Johnny was fired for being drunk and fighting police offers in MIA "Do you guys know who I am?". Manny Diaz, Johnny, and the City of Miami do Real Estate deals using public dollars and resources for personal benefit, and everyone stands around watching.

The City Commissioners in Miami were paid a meager salary, so corruption has become an accepted practice. I believe this may have changed. But, this just addresses some of the problems with the commissioners.

Every year one or more high ranking public officials are arrested in Miami. I used to think people from Miami exaggerated these corruption stories until i moved there. Now, I am shocked more people do not know how bad the problem is.

Douglas--I do like New Smyrna--almost moved there but in a less then rational moment I relocated to Miami. LOL Not sure when I will get up that way! Not sure what the deal with TS Hannah is but I would imagine at the least we will get some rain and wind! Maybe you guys will catch a piece of it!
==================================================================

HE-Yes I remember J. Winton and his arrest--3 ring circus. The Art Teele Suicide in the Main Lobby of the Miami Herald around the same time was quite a big deal also. He walked in the doors-placed a gun to his temple and blew his brains out! Manny Diaz and his Sidekick-Joe Arroyo, then city manager, were caught up in the multi million dollar Fire Refund Fee, quite a scandal in itself. Manny Diaz really never recuperated his Good name after that. On Ros Lehtinen, Yes I remember her calling for Castro's Death and of course, this being Miami, she got away with it. Sadly there are a lot of Scams costing the US Taxpayers by Cubans here in Miami--if the rest of the US knew about it they would march on Washington. There is a Colombian American Businesswoman, Annette Taddeo, running against Ros-Lehtinen but she is considered a longshot though there is hope. We need some Non-Cuban Lawmakers here in Miami but I doubt it will happen anytime soon. People have Horse-Blinders on here in the USA when it comes to Miami's problems. Many people who live here don't know what is going on!
