Miami is OUT, Las Vegas IN

The Latin craze peaked 2-3 years ago. Miami was great early 90s thur 2000. Now filled with blacks, South Beach 50% black at night, with hip hop bars. The place has no class anymore. Look even Shaq just to Miami, to hang out with all the brothers.

Many latinas will be in for a surprise when they move there, it sucks, unless you have big bucks to shelter you from all the crap.

Las Vegas is now where all the young and hip are moving.

The latin craze , well its 15 minutes of fame has come and gone.

I admit there seem to be more brothers nowadays in South Beach, but they're mostly just middle-class thug-life wannabes or just middle-class kids and completely harmless.

If you don't want to hang out with them, there are plenty of places in South Beach that they don't go to. And plenty of places that will allow you to get your Latin groove thang on.

Las Vegas gets cold in the winter and has no beach. And tell me where else in the US but in South Beach can you walk to a restaurant and order bandeja paisa???

There are many racial overtones to your statements, both to blacks and latinos. If race is an issue with you, perhaps stay out of Colombia, as apparently the people there probably won't measure up to your "class" standards.

Why do you even post here? There are many neo-Nazi sites available for those who want to be around the "hip" crowd.

Dude, Miami is not just South Beach, even if your aversion to morenos makes you think the sight of a bunch of them in South Beach means the place is overrun with them.

There are plenty of other areas of Miami with a heavy and even upscale Latin scene. Coral Gables for one. Hell, even where Shaq plays in the American Airlines Arena there's a restaurant/club called Bongo's which is nominally Cuban but a great place to rumbear.

Tons of restaurants, Nightclubs of any variety, gyms, libraries. Been to the Everglades National Park just south of Homestead???-great park and Big! How about Bayside(by downtown miami)?? Lots of nice things there!! Check out the Mickasoukkee Casino--great boxing matches--gen. adm tickets for $15 for 6 fights--sometimes Don King or the likes are there.Lots of other clubs 5-10 minutes east of the casino or farther south in Kendall. Like Topless-go to Tootsies--on 7th ave. north-across from Peterson's Harley Davidson on 441 north(5 min south of pro-player stadium)All of Miami cannot be as you described it-Remember, a short time ago the First Presidental Debates were held at the Univ. of Miami in Coral Gables and if it was all bad as you described it to be--George W Bush or J.Kerry would not have stepped foot into Miami!!! If you want nice, uncrowded beaches-go North on Collins to Surfside--from 80st ave. to 95th st.Great Clean Beach!

From all races & places around the US & the world. GUESS WHY? It's not becuse it's hip, it's because it has jobs! Duh! My buddy is moving out there w/ his wife, they talked w/ a real estate agent, he said that house that SIX MONTHS ago were selling for 160k, now go for 350k. I was just out there couple of months ago for work, and they have HUGE asian-style malls, rival chinatown/litte tokyo of LA or SF.

Your comment about latinos immigrants needing more money to "shelter" them, is true FOR ANY part of the US now. EVERYTHING in the US is more expensive that BEFORE. Not just in Miami, looks like you took good observation and threw in some wacky racial issue without thinking. Hopefully you're well meaning, but ignorant. America now seems to care LESS about race BUT more class base. If you have money, you live well, IF you don't money, you're living in the ghetto with all the other poor folks regardless of your national or racial background.

If anything you are just a jealous person because the blacks and latinos drive the nice cars, wear the nice clothes and have the most beautiful women while you can't find a woman in Medellin.

For anyone that cares your post here answered all the questions we ever had about why you couldn't find a woman in Medellin. The Medellin women knew a LOSER when they met one in YOU !!!! God bless the women of Medellin for their good insight you ________!

In case you never noticed during your one day visit to latin america, Latinos come in all colors white, black, and brown plus all colors in between. They were able to sort you out for what you truely are, a racist. The most friendly and nice people I every met in Colombia where in Quibdo, Choco where they are almost totally all black.

Maybe you could spend a year or two with the people of Choco and mature into a more considerate person. Right now I am on a caribbean island surrounded by 65% african blacks and 25% hispanics from the DR and PR (of all colors) with the minority of 10% whites (including me). My best friends are the blacks and hispanics who have treated me as one of their own as opposed to the whites dwelling on their self importance.

Finally, the american flag flies here and many of the sons and daughters of these african black and hispanic people are stationed in IRAQ fighting along with other american nationalities for the freedom that enables you to write your garbage.

If there is that many blacks in Miami I think I will buy a home there too and hang out with my brothers. jajajajaja

What makes you think that some city located in a non-latin nation is the capital of latin america? Miami may be the latin capital of the USA, but not Latin America! The mere suggestion is insulting. Latin America does not have any one capital, it has many great capitals: Bogota, Buenos Aires, Caracas, Mexico City, Lima, etc.

Well I think there are certainly plenty of beautiful black women in Medellin and Bogota for the black men to marry if any one was counting colors. After all, 20% of Colombia's population is black. I was born color blind so I have never had to separate people by the color of their skin.

The women I have met in Colombia are mostly interested in meeting and marrying a man of any color and not a boy.

In addition to Caracas, you named all four of the old virreinatos. Times change. Get with it. You'll find peruanos in Lima, colombianos in Bogotá, mejicanos in Mexico City, and argentinos in Buenos Aires (oops, I meant "el Virreinato del Rio de la Plata"), but only in Miami will you find all of these people together in one overwhelmingly Latin American city.

greenday -- you seemed to miss the word "walk" in my post. Can you walk from whereever you it is you live in the U.S. to a restaurant that has bandeja paisa? I can, and to more than one. That was my point.

Miamigo I think that the term "Miami is the financial capital of Latin America" is a more correct terminology that could be successfully argued especially regarding the private capital from Latin Americas wealthy. Maybe this has been less of a haven during the past few years because of the declining value of the US dollar vs. other currencies but there is certainly a lot of Latin American wealth parked in Miami.

South Beach I won't back the racist undertones, but will say it's a fact that ON THE STREET in South Beach along Collins and Ocean at night ghetto culture does rule. The majority or at least the largest minority ON THE STREET is black, not latin. Ghetto/thug culture, unlike latin culture, is generally unfriendly toward outsiders. However, people of all skin colors do mix quite well on South Beach. Maybe not mix so much - more like co-exist.

You do have to watch your back on South Beach like any other city. And if you make eye contact with a hard punk gangsta looking kid that seems to be staring you down give him the reverse-nod and the "whazzup". Chances are he'll say hi back to you. Nice people come in all colors, cultures and dresses. You just have to take the initiative and break the communication barriers, because it's not part of their culture to be welcoming or outwardly friendly towards outsiders - especially white outsiders.

To be honest though, I do very much prefer to be not surrounded by the ghetto culture. I'd rather be surrounded by people that go out of their way to be friendly. People like me not in skin color, but in spirit and mentality. Who wouldn't? I couldn't live on that side of South Beach. Maybe the bay side of South Beach. Maybe Coral Gables... definitely Key Biscayne, but who could afford it?

G-Capo, it sounds like you got some of that like Tupac talk down pretty well yourself and stuff. Maybe you just need more baggy clothes and more bling bling, and you'd be baggin them ho's too, youknownwhamsayin? ;)

After your 1st month of the glamour and glitz of the strip and downtown LV, the complete plasticness of LV will probably wear on you. You'll still have some of the same type of people in Miami. Most latin people I know are good at that. You'll love the fact that there's no winter. You'll love the fact that you can be well entertained all day at the beach for FREE. When you get sick of the hustle and bustle of South Beach's beach, you drive 10 minutes to Key Biscayne and you're in a virgin tropical beach paradise. Concentrate on the good things and the good people and you'll have a great life in Miami.

As for Miami, I go there frequently and enjoy it. I stay in South Beach. Yes there are a few thugs, but not on Lincoln. Espanola Way is cool, nice french cafe and a groovy yoga studio, Wild Oats health food store, tons of great places to dance (for fun or for cash), and beaches where you can wear a tanga with no top.

I will say that Calle Ocho is, in my humble opinion, over-rated. But nothing beats renting a caonvertible and driving down route one to Key West for a few days, stop in at Bahia Honda beach - a real treat.

If endless strip malls and steaming blacktop and smoking in the grocery store is your idea of hip, with-it culture... Las Vegas is your place! I'm no fan of Miami, either, but at least Miami has things. Vegas is nothing but a creepy, hideous, blasted, apocalyptic wasteland.

Gomez, they (Sagua) really lucked out with that spot, imagine between Ocean drive and Washington Avenue, the freaking heart of touristy Miami Beach. I still go there, is my daughter’s favorite place, it reminds them of when they were kids.
The first time I went to Miami was in the winter of ’78. I was with my brother and another Colombian friend. We had rented a car and were clubbing in NYC. About 1am we decided to drive down to Miami, non stop. No luggage, clothe, toothbrush, nothing just our winter clothe and platform shoes. We bought everything we needed when we got there, the following day at 1 am. It was too late for a hotel so we slept on the beach, and got up only after we heard screaming kids and their families all around us. Man, when I opened my eyes, I was blown away by the awesome beauty of Miami Beach. Until then I’ve never seen such beautiful water my entire life. The ocean in Barranquilla is nothing like Miami Beach. I‘ve been going back every year since, sometimes up to 4 times a year.

I'll get there, when I get there!

ELmo other nice beaches in Miami Hey Elmo-next time you are in Miami-go about 70 blocks north to 80 and Collins and you will find North Shore State Park--its really nice with trees, showers, Barb. Grills, Picnic Tables--I go there for swimmialso lots of good parking always! None of those Nazi Meter Maids found always lurking on South Beach. If you are a Nudist-you may find Haulover Beach a little more entertaining and revealing. Its about 2 miles up from North Shore I mention above. Be careful you don't go to the first beach in Haulover--thats the Gay Beach and you don't seem from your posts to be of the variety.

Guys, I gotto Haulover park all the time. That’s where they got the Viking fleet. I go out for all day fishing. Right across the street is that incredible beach, with picnic tables under those tall trees. I thought that was my little well kept secret.

I'll get there, when I get there!

Miami Beach or Baranquilla?? MB wins---hands down Miami Beach truly is gorgeous. Watching the sun rise in early morning (which you must have seen since you litterally slept on the beach) or watchining the moon shine over the ocean's horizon at night is reallly cool!!

Considering you're Barranquiero, saying that MB is better than Barranquilla says a lot!!

Latin Population Peaked?? In Miami?? When??? Hey Greg-they run these Immigration Stats all the Time here in Miami and their opinion and Stats differ greatly from yours. The Influx from The South and central americas and Carribbean Still is driving the growth. Not too many Northerners at all come to retire or work here. A few European investors also are trickling in. Our housing appreciation is driven NOW by wealthy latin americans. On your other comment-Miami is not like what you see in the Magazines--what place is? Workers who immigrate to Sun Valley Idaho or Las Vegas because they were there on Vacation also find its different when they go to live and work full time. Got to do your Homework anywhere and Yes, MONEY does help--not only in Miami but anywhere, including LAs Vegas. If you have neither Money or an Occupation or the Langauge skills you are going to have a "Hard Row to Hoe" wherever you go. Man this is universal.Colombia too--no money, no honey as the saying goes. Sounds like you based your whole impression of Miami on Chicks and South Beach. Nothing wrong with that but with such limited experience you can't honestly critque the whole area. Next time you are in Miami-head west to the Everglades on 41(known as sw 8 st, calle 8) past krome ave. into the everglades and go for an airboat ride at the Gator Farm and then get a plate 'Gator Balls and fries. "Gator balls" are cut round pieces of alligator tail deep fried and "Finger Lickin' good"--it will put your perspective of Miami into an entirely different light. PeaceOut!

Elmo-fishing at Haulover Beach& Nude Beach Hey Elmo-you have good luck going out Fishing on the Boats at Haulover? I never went out there. If you headed south and east about 10 minutes thats where I live.In the 125th&Biscayne area. I always Fish on the Bridges between Biscayne Blvd. as you head over to Bal Harbor on the causeway. Have to try Haulover fishing sometime. That Kite Park right where the Boats are docked at Haulover is great also-on Sat. and Sun. they have 100s of Kites in the Air--adults and kids practicing their Kite Tricks. That is entertaining in itself. Elmo-you didn't say much about the Nude beach at Haulover--figured that would be a place of interest to you! On Collins at about 85th st there is a Hotel called "Dezerland" check it out-the Decor is all Old Classic American Cars-and these are actually the seats also. Good Ocean view also I might add.

I based my opinion on knowing Miami for 15 years and seeing how it has changed, but I used to live in Boca for a few years.

Yes, it can be very nice, if you have the bucks to be shielded, otherwise latinas maybe disappointed.

My amiga came from Bogota to Miami and was upset having to work with people so clearly below her strata, and work with lazy people with bad attitude, so spoiled and lazy.

Langauge Barrier here in Miami! Greg-many Latinos(as)come to Miami and become depressed at the jobs available to them. As I mentioned, lack of Langauge skills-many do not speak english at the technical level(if they speak english at all) needed to progress in their careers here. Miami is the WORST place in the world to learn English-so many speak spanish here that new arrivals are not put into that "learn english" to survive mode. The would learn English much faster if they went to middle america where their survival depended on their learning English at an advanced level. Remember to be considered truly bilingual you have to Write and Speak the langauge. A lot of people simply don't put the effort into properly learning the Langauge and never advance in their life here. I see attornies baby sitting, working as maids, bartenders ect. This would depress anyone but many many schools here offer English Study practically free of cost. True, the better langauge schools cost some $$$ but well worth it considering the alternative. The flip side of the coin is that if one of us Northamericans moved to a spanish speaking country we would be expected to learn Spanish if we were to sucessfully integrate into society there. There would be no Exceptions made for us and its the same here in the US. Got to learn the langauge!

What are you taking about? I do not know what Miami your talking about because no one has more beautiful weather, beaches or people. Here in Miami we have all types of people all type of music. Yes there is more latin people than every other type. Las Vegas is cool but it does not compare to Miami. I should know I was born and rasied here. But I also love visiting Colombia.

Forget Las Vegas. You clearly should be in Montana with all of those white supremacists.

True In my city the school has free continuing education types of classes free my certified experienced ESL teachers. Many people think they are going to pick English up in six months. At my wifes recent "graduation" we were told that to get to the native English speaker level takes about seven years typically. It can be shortened to three with a lot of effort. This does not mean that it willl take you seven years to become functional.

My wife obtained work in six months in an English enviroment. She is in retail sales in a local store. Typically she has to greet and help 1500 customers per month. She is keeping pace with her American coworker in sales but still has great difficulty at times.

She is disappointed at the six dollars an hour but like I told her many are working for less. Also told her to look at it like she is getting paid to attend English classes. And she picks up a new Colombiana friend every so often.

She has progressed at about twice the rate of her class mates and I attribute it to regular attendance, hard work, and most of all working in an Englsih speaking enviroment.
