PBH / colombia (travelguide, pictures) / post |
fortunately not with me (hooo boy, I don't even want to think about that :) but for the past two or three nights in a row, colombians have been the cast in a very negative light on the TV. She's been offended that in every case Colombian = Narcotraficante and worries that this is how the Americans think of them.
I said, some might, but for the most part that's just Hollywood playing up racial stereotypes. If they don't play up the stereotypes, they lose credibility for not showing the "reality" (like TV has anything to do with reality, these days).
I told her that some of the common stereotypes you will see in American TV include:
Russians = mafiosos (moreso than Italians)
Colombians = Narcotraficantes
Mexicans = farmers or just lazy
etc.
and of course American = saint, hero, etc.
In my experience, these stereotypes represent the vast, though perhaps more visible, minority, yet seem to be reinforced in the "TV Reality" quite frequently.
Now that I think about it, I'm angry, too!
