Mi Colombia Take a journey through the majestic Andes Mountains and experience the brilliant flower festivals and lively carnivals of Colombia when Soraya , the Latin Grammy© winner and Colombian singer/songwriter, narrates an original WPBT production of MI COLOMBIA. You’ll discover the heart of a country steeped in rich history, colorful traditions and stunning natural beauty.
This one-hour television special visits Colombia ’s world-famous Barranquilla Carnival, the beloved Flower Festival in Medellin, vibrant Christmas celebrations and passionate sporting events. Images blend together with the distinctive sounds of the vallenato and cumbia music. Interviews with families and some well-known Colombians highlight fond memories that paint a vivid portrait of a remarkable country. The program features interviews with Juanes , Rafael Escalona, Edgar Renteria , Luis Carlos Perea , Enrique Córdoba and Eucario Bermúdez, among many others. Also featured are Colombians in South Florida who are working hard to keep their traditions alive.
The program begins with breathtaking views of Colombia’s natural landscapes, then goes inside various cities to illustrate the wide variety of cultures that make up the country. Viewers ride along with families to “fincas” or ranch houses for weekend outings, and join a Colombian Christmas, complete with Colombian carols, guitars and maracas. MI COLOMBIA also honors the country’s diverse musical traditions, including the popular cumbia and the vallenato, which originated in the region of Valledupar, near the Caribbean coast. MI COLOMBIA ties personal family photographs together with archival and contemporary footage of Colombia, underscored by the vibrant rhythms of its music.

The chances of airing “mi Colombia” on a local Minnesota PBS station are pretty slim, most there don’t know from a Colombian if one landed on top of their head. Now, a program like “Mi Sweden” is more appropriate for that part of USA. It all has to do with local viewers and their interests. We got millions of spics in NYC therefore we offer a wide variety of Latino programs. Mi Santo Domingo, mi Mexico, mi Cucamanga, mi Puerto Rico etc. Personally, I think is a waste of money and time, those spics are too damn cheap to make any donations, they rather spent their time watching novelas and drinking miller beer.
Of course this is my personal opinion and not that of PBS which welcomes all viewers, cheap or not.

??? The website states:

Channel 2 is committed to celebrating the cultural diversity of South Florida. Through the years, WPBT has presented originally-produced documentaries and performance specials which reach out to the Hispanic community in a variety of entertaining and relevant programs. Click here to learn more about this production, as well as other specials produced by Channel 2.

MI COLOBMIA has been underwritten in-part by Badia Spices and South Florida Jeep-Chrysler, proud sponsors of public television and of Channel 2 original productions. Promotional support provided by Radio Caracol.

There is all kinds of involvement with and in South Florida but I do not find it in the schedule for Channel 2 nor in DirecTV line-up. Does anyone know when they will show it in South Florida?

Thanks,

Farmsearch The network is PBS and the network across each city in the US has a different assigned channel numbers. In New York is channel 13, in Florida is channel 2, in San Antonio is channel 9 and in New Jersey is channel 11. In your city it must be a different channel number.
Channel 2 in your city may not be the channel to call about this TV special.

Anyway, you can call any of the satellite stations that are broadcasting "Mi Colombia" and order a DVD or tape, if you wish.

Monpirri says on Oct 8, 2006, 18:23:

It's worth it if one wants to learn more about the country I believe it’s very much worth it because I have noticed there is a great deal of members who only know Colombia about women and dating. Colombia it is certainly more than that.
Of course, if you travel frequently to Colombia and to different places within the country, the DVD or tape would merely be an educational enhancement to your current cultural experiences and would in some degree enrich your knowledge about the country and its culture. I being from Colombia, I learned from the TV special.
After you have seen the DVD, you can add it to your tape/book collection of foreign countries you have visited, or give it as a gift to a friend, your mate or girlfriend even if she was born in Colombia. As in the states, or in any other country not every citizen knows the country very well unless he or she spends a great deal of the time traveling across the country and exchanging experiences with the natives.

Monpirri says on Oct 10, 2006, 22:20:

Yo me llamo cumbia It’s a very popular and classic cumbia song in Colombia.
I began to use, "Yo me llamo cumbia," as a flag of advertisement several months ago, and every once in a blue moon, when few members decided to disregard it in favor of another music genre that was not of Colombian origin.
Soy colombiano (Bambuco) and Colombia tierra querida are also very popular songs and among my favorites.

Here's Yo me llamo cumbia lyrics:

YO ME LLAMO CUMBIA
Autor: Mario Gareña
Ritmo: Cumbia

(bis)

My name is Cumbia (English Translation)
"Yo me llamo Cumbia" (1964)

Original Spanish Writen/Performed by Mario Gareña,
Singer/song writer from Barranquilla, Colombia-South America

My name is Cumbia, I am the queen wherever I go,
no hip can stay still anywhere I go,
my skin is brown, like the hides of my drum,
and my shoulders a pair of maracas kissed by the sun. (line 2x)

I've got in my throat the finest flute, a gift from God,
bouquet of millo, scent of tobacco, aguardiente and rum,
grabbing my bag, I light the candle, the song beating the drum,
and I wrap around moon and stars all of my voice. (line 2x)

'Cause I am the queen, I'm courted by a fine violin,
a piano loves me, a saxo follows me and I hear a clarinet,
and a whole orchestra makes a fiesta around me,
and I am La Cumbia, female coquette, I dance happily. (line 2x)

I was born in beautiful Caribbean beaches of my country,
I'm Barranquillera, I'm Cartagenera, I'm from that country,
I'm from Santa Marta, I'm Monteriana, but it's like this:
I'm Colombian, oh, beautiful land where I was born! (line 2x)
