Mexico seizes drug submarine in Pacific

7/17/2008, 1:18 a.m. EDTThe Associated Press

HUATULCO, Mexico (AP) — Mexico's navy seized a homemade submarine carrying a drug shipment off the Pacific coast on Wednesday and arrested its four-man crew.

Similar vessels carrying cocaine have been discovered off Colombia and Central America, but navy spokesman Capt. Benjamin Mar said the seizure is a first for Mexico.

The 30-foot makeshift submarine was detected heading north about 200 miles off the southern state of Oaxaca, Mar said.

Wow.. and I thought they were just joking when they mentioned this method on the "Sin Senos No Hay Paraiso" show that's airing now on a local spanish language channel (Not Univision, the other one). They could sure get a lot into Mexico this way. I don't think they could get it across to the U.S. though --- they'd be blown up unless the military was in on the deal.

Sort of gives a new meaning to "We All Live in a Yellow Submarine"...

it's not dissimilar to how it is in colombia....more blow for the govt. coffers. they don't dump that shit at sea nor do they burn it. those are just all disinformation videos.

right, they're gonna throw 'platinum' in the ocean or burn it.

So anotherwards the gist of what yur all saying here is that the entire govt orchestrated effort of the DEA and their correlaries in other countries is nothing more than a mechanism to put the competition out of bizniss and consolidate the product under one umbrella, theirs, correct or no?

lpdiver says on Jul 17, 2008, 08:54:

Actually, " the entire govt orchestrated dffort of the DEA and their correlaries..." is what drives the cost of drugs up. The war on drugs drives supply down and keeps prices up.

i remember years ago, watching these disinformation videos in poblado around 1990...they had seized about 38 tons of blow in some jungle lab and had it spread out on a soccer field about three kilos deep...everywhere. just unimaginable. enough to make a line to pluto and back.

then, they show em burning stuff.....right, my aching ass....a colombian friend of mine who was visiting looked at me and said...you believe that bullshit? no way jose. all that solid gold goes to the feds bodega.

and the young guys who work for the dea, btf. and who ever else, they--many of them--look like thugs, bandanas around their heads, pistols in their belt and espaldas like outta romancing the stone. these are dealers', dealers. si o no.

it's all the same to me. business is business. and if they'ld humanize a bit and legalize it and make their money off taxation, most of the crime surrounding it would disappear. remember, las indigenas have/were using it with in their culture for 10,000 yrs before ole round eye came.. they still have no problems with it. it's just our greedy little miserable asses that create problems.

Douglas, I sometimes think the same thing. The USA tried to outlaw alcohol, and it didn't work. I think it is in Switzerland, and most likely also in The Netherlands, that there are areas when junkies can get clean needles, and do what they have to do, and then they die. That's inevitable.

Maybe, like Iraq, it is better than spending billions of dollars fighting an unwinnable war. And the falling prices would drive the criminals from the business?

it's the criminals who put up the money to the lobbyists to pay the groups to keep the comotion alive and keep the drugs illegal. makes sense.....

Huh? Who are the lobbyists for the drug war in the US and Colombia and for stiff prison sentences in the US?

in the us, the strongest is the christian right. war on drugs? or war for drugs?

i saw a tv documentary in the early 90's when one american journalist was interviewing a colombian drug capo...from the back...and the capo, making a laughing reference to nancy reagan, said, "...how do you 'just say no' to a billion dollars.' this was on tv in medellin.

Well, I have always supported the legalization of Marijuana :) But not just for smoking but for making all kinds of things, like paper that lasts and lasts (The Original U.S. Constitution is written on Hemp Paper!), hemp rope, hemp clothing, etc... Just making Marijuana legal (and all of its by-products) would really impact the oil industry and the street drug market somewhat.

Hey, is it legal to chew coca leaves in Colombia? I have seen documentaries with indigenas chewing the leaves to help deal with the high altitude, but they're not eating gobs and gobs of it, just a manojo (a handful).

I guess I'm curious if you can go to a mercado and buy it in the produce area hehe... though the nature of the leaf and the way things are in Colombia I doubt it would be available and if they found some on you they'd arrest you and throw you in jail for 15 years on drug charges...

I have seen it is legal to sell coca tea bags and ground up coca leaves in Peru (not for export to the U.S. though).

I have chewed the leaves and drank the tea in Perú for gastic distress and to prevent altitude sickness. The tea is available at the high altitude hotels, and gives no buzz.

I even transported a bag of leaves, lost in my luggage, back to Puerto Rico, via MIA.

The indiginous chew it to increase stamina and reduce hunger, like these silla quarrymen, in the south, near Arequipa:

re legality...yes possession of up to --i think it's 2-3 grams of coca--for one's personal use is legal in colombia...trafficking is strictly illegal and can quickly get you dead. as for the leaves, the plant grows everywhere and is even a decorative plant in cities all over the country. no problem chewing the leaves if you like lime drying out your mouth and parching your lips. better to just eat the powder and keepit outta your nose. it's like a great cup of coffee and a good energy boost while doing your work. nasaly, it sucks. i know, i've done more than my share.

There is a CNN piece with fotos and a video at:

http://edition.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/03/20/drug.subs/index.html?iref=news...

It claims that they cost as much as a million dollars, but I read elsewhere that they cost anywhere from $600K to 2 million, and take a year to construct, and of course are only used once, and then discarded.

i probably don't need to tell who has the biggest stash in colombia or in mexico. they get it free and are known to profit from it's "distruction". RIP
