Latin artist Mercedes Sosa dies
Argentine folk singer and activist Mercedes Sosa has died aged 74 after suffering kidney problems.

Sosa's popularity in Latin America spanned four decades, but she fell foul of the Argentine junta in the 1970s.

Her latest album has been nominated for three Latin Grammy awards, which are due to be announced in November.

Dubbed "the voice of the silent majority", Sosa was credited with championing the poor and fighting for political change.

Along with her first husband, Manuel Oscar Matus, she became a founding member of the mid-60s Nueva Cancion movement.

At a 1979 concert in the Argentine city of La Plata, Sosa was searched and arrested on stage along with all those attending the concert.

She was subsequently banned from recording, and left the country to live in Paris and Madrid. She returned to her homeland in 1982 just before the collapse of military rule.

A Unicef goodwill ambassador, Sosa produced 40 albums over her long career and collaborated with musicians including Luciano Pavarotti, Sting, Shakira and Joan Baez.

Mañana ya, la sangre no estara
Al caer la lluvia se la llevara
Acero y piel, combinacion tan cruel
Pero algo en nuestras mentes quedara.

Un acto asi terminara
Con una vida, y nada mas
Nada se logra con violencia
Ni se lograra.

Aquellos que han nacido
En un mundo asi
No olviden su fragilidad.

Lloras tu y lloro yo,

Me desgajaré...
cuando el turbio ojear del zonda
cementando montes va
soy verde acorde del valle
salada cresta del mar
no ha de matarme la muerte, jamás.

Un horizonte de zambas, buscaré
iré rastreando guitarras, para ser
pastor de cosas perdidas
pechando siempre a la vida estaré.

Mensaje vivo en el bombo, cantaré
sin nombre para nombrarme, viviré
cimbreando en las polvaredas
salamanquear chacareras con mi voz

No ha de matarme la muerte, jamás.

Thousands bid farewell to Argentine singer Mercedes Sosa

The Associated Press

12:00 PM EDT, October 5, 2009

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) -- Argentines lining the streets tossed flowers and applauded to honor the late Mercedes Sosa on Monday as a hearse carried the folk singer from honors at Argentina's Congress to the Chacarita cemetery.

A large crowd sang, wept, danced and prayed together, vowing to keep her memory alive.

The legendary singer, who died Sunday at 74, will be cremated and her ashes scattered in Argentina's capital as well as the Argentine provinces of Mendoza and Tucuman, her family said.

A column of police on motorcycles led a caravan of black limousines from Congress, where she lay in state while thousands of fans -- including Argentina's president and celebrities -- came to pay their respects Sunday and Monday.

The leftist Sosa was forced into exile by Argentina's military dictatorship of the 1970s but never backed down, lending her voice to inspire many who suffered. Colombia's Shakira, who sings on Sosa's last, Grammy-nominated album, said "we are all better for having known her -- she showed us that a song can teach us so much."

"Just an honest, decent Colombian trying to do the right thing."--Simon

My wife and I had the privilege of seeing her in concert at the Royal Festival Hall or QEH on the Southbank in London around the time of our first wedding anniversary in May 2001 and I must admit that I left the concert feeling quite stunned. I am not a fan of Latin music generally but she was TERRIFIC and after that, I became a little more open about my tastes in world/Latin music!! My wife is in a form of mourning as I write this and out of respect, I have given her unlimited access to the hifi to play Mercedes songs for as long as she needs (which is a first).
One great talent who will be missed by so many in not just South America but other continents too!

Good God. What a pity.

I bought one of her CDs in 2000. Heard it in the record shop and got it there and then.

I've never been able to like her music. I understand that her lyrics can be deep and profound but you know me and goat sounding singers. Not my cup of tea. But putting that all aside, may she rest in peace.
