Melgar Anyone?

This came in the (e) mail today from the US embassy in Bogotá. I´ve read elsewhere there is supposed to be a US military presence there for helicopter training purposes. I´m skepticle. Can anyone confirm that?

“This Warden Message is to alert American citizens traveling to or residing in Colombia that the U.S. Embassy has received information indicating that the terrorist organization known as the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) may be planning to target U.S. citizens in the town of Melgar, in Tolima Department. The Embassy recommends that U.S. citizens avoid travel to Melgar until further notice. For U.S. citizens already in Melgar, the Embassy urges them to maintain a low profile and to avoid restaurants, bars, and other public places until further notice.”

There is definitely an American military presence in Melgar because of the very large military base - Tolemaida - just outside of town.

Helicopters, the Lancero school, Plan Colombia, other training courses - there are a number of reasons for the Americans to be at Tolemaida. And they're not the only ones, a number of foreign military VIPs pass through, too.

If you look hard, you can see a bird waiting for a fish, I imagine. That river is cold, even though Melgar is quite hot. It's also fast and you can see from the stones that during the rainy season it gets quite a bit larger (photos taken early Jan 2007)

Kat, My Ladyfriend and her Family have a Large Farm in Melgar. I 've never been there bit she always talks the place up about how scenic and Tranquil(peaceful) it is.LOL Now you write this! Interesting Info to know for our next phone call! I cut and pasted that first post and sent it to her. I see this so much-denying the risk&danger of an Area by the residents. Is the endemic to the culture???

On Sept 17, 2008: Senator John McCain said, as he had many times before, that he believed the fundamentals of the economy were "strong."Hours later he backpedaled, explaining that he had meant that American workers were Strong.

Miamike if you live outside the town on a farm like your friend then yes it is pretty like any other countryside in Colombia, but the town itself is ugly and as i said unless you kind of holiday is just drinking and swimming all afternoon then melgar will suit, but is a place i will never put on my list as a holiday anymore i get claustrophobic after 2 days!

Ok I prefer Girardot but again over Melgar although it is not on my favourite list either.

Im with GIB and Kat on this one. Melgar is possibly the nastiest place in that area. If you want to have a nice relaxing time, rent a villa in Anapoima. People are nice, weather is great. Id take girardot over melgar ANYTIME at least girardot has some decent places to hang around...melgar is a big black hole full of prepubescent horny greasy teenagers, and old horny greasy gringos.

Theyre probably still pissed off at the sex videos of American Soldiers having sex with what seemed to be underaged girls and the fact that they were never prosecuted. If Colombian justice does not apply to americans, 3 kidnapped gringos prove that FARC's will does, and they might even get a couple million for them as well. Not that I am condoning FARC, I hate the bastards, but surely that is the way they look at things.

When US citizens are hostages in other countries, it's a big deal. Why have the 3 US citizens hostages in Colombia been forgotten?

Tinto (Moderator) says on Jul 1, 2007, 08:19:

They haven't been forgotten, Lowell. Keep in mind two things, 1) the U.S. government has a policy of not paying ransom because it only encourages more kidnappings and 2) they're not soldiers.

I imagine some things are happening behind the scenes that need to stay quiet for good reason, but if Colombia cannot find hundreds/thousands of their own kidnapped citizens in their own backyard after years of looking, what makes you think the U.S. is going to have more luck?

GIB i never said what theyre doing is moral, right, understandable or anything of the sort. Yes they recruit kids, yes they rape women, kidnap children, kill people without any remorse. But does that change the fact that THEY believe they are entitled to all that in order to resist a State that does nothing for its people and remains on its knees when it comes to bilateral relations with the US?
It can piss you off, as is is not necessarily that way. But does it matter how you see it? Does it matter that it pisses you off? I dont think so, it does not change the way they see things. So chill out and dont get pissed off at me because I am not supporting any of those views. I can however, express that is the way THEY see them...didnt know that was so offensive.

It's been a while, but getting this thread back on topic, what is the deal with this warning, we were planning on going to CAFAM in Melgar in a couple of weeks, which is gated so I'm not worried about safety there, but on the road to Melgar from Bogota you're sometimes stopped by the army, so I'm wondering if FARC is going to be stopping cars on the way o Melgar or whether they are just targeting U.S. militarios in bars in Melgar itself.
