Meeting Opportunity for PBH members in Southern Florida

I am finally back online again after 3 months of hard work. I moved to Miami Beach and I am remodeling a restaurant in the Art Deco district on Ocean Drive. We will be opening the first phase very soon, a street café. I am able to offer all PBH members attractive discounts, and the hotel owner agreed to participate and offer hotel discounts as well.

Since Miami is the main hub for tourists and business people to and from Colombia this is a good place to meet with any traveling PBH members. Plus South Beach is a prime spot for a few days break. Here is the address:

Starlite Hotel and Café
750 Ocean Drive
Miami Beach, FL 33139

phone and fax for café: 305-534-3073 (after opening)
starlitecafe at bellsouth.net (active)

I will be posting PBH member vouchers in my profile when we are ready. I am still working on the details. I will also contact Webmanco (I think it is his name) about the meeting button thing. As café we can seat up to 40 people outside. Later this year we will have inside seating as well. If all goes well we will have rooftop lounge on the 5th floor with ocean view. All in all, room enough for PBH member gatherings large or small.

Since I am the kitchen manager, beware, I will know due to the vouchers who is eating and drinking what ... sweet revenge ... just kidding ... I promise I will do my best to make everybody happy. I might even offer Colombian dishes for these meetings.

I am really looking forward to this new venue and also to meeting more PBH members in person. Those who know me longer here will remember how much I enjoy cooking and international food. I still have my internet radio station, but I tossed my software career to the sharks.

It is good to be back,
Lionheart

Well hello old (not too old) friend Your absense has been giving Tinto more than his fair share of work. Anyway, how the heck are you? So from Texas to Miami Beach. Well that has always been my second home. I know MB very well inasmuch as I have been only going there well over 30 years. I remember when South Beach was loaded filled with Orthodox Jews, and Cubans from the Merilitos boat lift---nothing like it is today. My parents lived there for many years and my father passed about 10 years ago. He lived in a condo at 58th and Collins....about 10 minutes north of you. In any event, one of my cousins from Bog is there now, so I hope to be heading down there in the next few weeks.

There are a lot of PBH members in South Florida so having a meetup should be easy. Miami Mike is there, and so is ColX, although he has not been here for a while. But I am just starting to come back here myself. I had to come back if for no other reason, to stir up some controversey which inevitably, I don't ever seem to have a problem doing......Anyway, I hope to see (meet ya) and a few others if you come up with something concretee for a "meet-up". Miami is less than a three hour flight from Chicago, and there are plenty of cheap flights..

Best of luck in your new locale.

Miami & South Beach is the place Hi Lionheart,

I will visit your establishment. I am born and raised right here in Miami. I am a friends of the legendary Gomezman5 and I am in for a PBH meeting. Good luck with your venture and I will see you soon.

AAAhhhhh Yes forgive me Peter Miami You are indeed one of a kind, and you can be sure that if this meeting takes place, I'll be there to finally get to know ya. And if it does not take place, next time I get to Miami to see my cousin, you and I will surely meet. Of you want to bring some of your friends in the photos, that would be fine too...

Lionheart says on Feb 5, 2006, 20:08:

SoBe is dangerous I am right next to Wet Willie's where all the hip-hop guys hang out, arriving in Rolls Royces and Bentleys ... just saw Ludacris last week. Cops everywhere ... and there was a stabbing at the News Café last week too ...

So if you are afraid to come here, then avoid Colombia. On the otherside, I have never met so many friendly people in a tourist trap like this. Ok, it is not Miami or other parts of the area, they keep the place clean. I will get some bodyguards for Gomez to be on the safe side. Escort him from the airport to here.

Main danger here is seeing all the flesh displayed ... walk into a pole or get run over ... or have a heart attack when she smiles back.

It is all good ...

Gomezman5 says on Feb 5, 2006, 21:10:

Thanks Lionheart....but I will be just fine Now if you guys are really going to compare South Beach with Colombia, you all really need help. One thing I can tell you about Miami Beach Police, they are pretty damn aggressive. They can't be everywhere but they are very visible. And they do mean business. They have no problem arresting you if you get out of line. What people seem to forget is that South Beach is just a large toursit area of Miami Beach. It is not a municipality of its own. It also has the country's larges Historical landmark district (Art Deco dist) which makes development cumbersome.

So the News Cafe had a stabbing???? Now that is really something. I have been there more than a hundred time. In fact, that is one of the few places that consistently has good food for reasonable prices. I dated a waitress from there. It is also one of the places, to its credit, that has managed to keep its doors open from the begining of South Beach's rise as a world wide tourist trap until now.

Hey Lionheart, have you checked out any of the hotels that specialize in marketing to tourishts in Germany. There are a couple of hotels, that actually work with tourists agencies in Germany to lure them to Miami Beach. It is amazing how you can walk down Ocean Drive, Collins Ave, or Washington St. and here so much German being spoken,or people speaking English with a German accent.

Anway....The G5 can take the heat of MB. No bodyguard needed there.

Maybe March 6th I should be in Miami on March 6th for 1 night before I fly on to Medellin.
What time do you close? How far from airport? I know nothing about Miami. Planning to stay at Princess that night.

Gomezman5 says on Feb 6, 2006, 14:07:

Hey Treeshark... You are just around the block from Lionheart. I believe he is on Ocean Dr, between 7th and 8th. The Princess Ann is at 9th and Collins. You only have to walk about a block and a half. (not even really) The blocks are short. I don't know when I am going to get down there. I would like to meet all the PBH members in the South Florida area. There are a lot of them down there. I wish I was still in touch with Colombiano X but, I don't even communicate with him by email anymore.

I know one thing, it is really cold up here in Chicago again, so now would be a great time to head down there for a long weekend. At the same time, I also am thinking about a trip to Colombia. But the Miami thing I can always do as a last minute type of thing too.

Lionheart says on Feb 6, 2006, 19:55:

not comparing just being a little sarcastic ...

Why not add a night or more in SoBe before and/or after the flights? Especially when you are on a longer flight.

We are planning to stay open 24/7, but probably not right away due to personell shortage. Most want to wait until we are open before they apply. So we are thinking about closing 2am weekdays and 4am weekends, and be ready to serve again at 8am.

Lots of Germans around here, as tourists and residents. I am fluent in German and have been chatting with hotel guests frequently. I haven't heard of a hotel specialized on German tourists, but I'll ask around. There are so many hotels here, chances are high that you could wind up quite far from the action district between 17th and 5th.

Gomezman5 says on Feb 8, 2006, 10:09:

Hey GringoD SoBe is always an option when you have a long lay over at MIA. It's a 15 minute ride. From the airport, take Le June Road (right outside of the airport) south to 836 (a few lights). Then 836 east (turns into 395)which then (turns into the McArthur Causeway to South Beach. You come off the cause way right onto 5th street. Your there.

But keep in mind, you are not going there if the lay over is only 3 or 4 hours. Anything can happen. You need a long lay over to go through that trouble. Remeber, you're purpose is to go to Colombia, and you don't want to miss that flight under any circumstance. I always tell people to just "stay put"!

24 Hours of Partying - South Beach & Miami Gomezman5 Dam, great directions you look like you live here. Yes you can not go to South Beach and think you can stay there for two hours, you will never leave.

I was born and raised here and I go to South Beach every weekend (I use to live there now I live 5 minutes away in Miami. Well I get there Friday nights at around midnight and it Sunday night or Monday mornings when I get back home which is 5 minutes away.

After clubs start to close in South Beach around 5 or 6 am you head for “After Hour Clubs”, clubs in South Beach or Downtown Miami. They clubs on weekends do not stop. You could go from Friday night until Monday morning from dance club to dance clubs. Even strip bars are open 24 hours (Master’s Strip Club). Bring a lot of money and we have any and everything else that you want.

HeyPete..... I practicaly did live there. My parents had a Condo on Collins for over 40 years. First at Maison Grande (6039) then one of the Sea Coast buildings. I know Miami Beach and nearby areas almost as well as I know Chicago.

Hell, at one time I think I was flying there about every 2 weeks. But, things change and I only get down there a few times a year now.

Thanks Gomezman5 however However when I said Princess, I meant the Miami Princess Hotel which is at 4251 N.W. 11 St. I like it because here are 3 places I can walk to for food. However if Lionheart's place will be open March 6, might just stay else where.

Gomezman5 says on Feb 8, 2006, 19:58:

Got ya Treeshark Well, I know that hotel. In terms of convenience, you cannot get much closer to MIA, It's just outside the airport off off LeJune Road. My feeling is if you are going to South Beach, go down there to visit, but if it is one of those deals where Your flight is going to Colombia early the next morning, stay at that hotel and forget about South Beach. You need to be as close to the airport as possible. And you cannot afford to miss that early morning flight to Colombia. Things happen on South Beach. You may stay it too late, you might get pick pocketed,,,whatever. You don't need any grief the night before you flight leaves to Colombia.

So go there in the afternoon and early evening, meet up with a few people, and then head back to that hotel for your early flight to Colombia. Trust me, you will be glad you did.

read my original post Name and address are there.

Things are falling into place, last equipment suppliers are scheduled for next week, and we started placing the food and beverage oders. I hope we can open next weekend.

Parking recommendation: Drive to Ocean Drive on 8th, turn right, 2nd building is the Starlite Hotel, where the Café is, with valet parking. They are the same price as the meters plus tip. Taxi to Ocean Drive from Miami Airport has a fixed rate: $28 each way. Within a few blocks North and South on Washington you find all the main nightclubs, 2 blocks East of Ocean Drive. Lots of shopping in this area too, plus on Lincoln Open Mall, about 10 blocks North.

I hope to see you here,
Lionheart

no GringoD You should know me by now. I operate in a very conservative manner. I would not leave the airport period, no matter how many hours I had between flights. I would not want to take the chance. Even on domestic flights, I arrive at the airport an hour and half before the fligt, and I don't check any baggage, and I already have my boarding pass in hand, So that should tell you how I am in that respect.

Also, I would NEVER have 12 hours between flight to Colombia. I always take a flight out of Chicago and to Miami that leaves in the AM. That means I would never have to wait more than a few hours to catch the next flight to Bogota that leaves MIA around 5 PM. I would never have to wait all night for the morning flight

Actually have about 24 hours in MIA I am flying on the 3PM flight from MIA to MDE..

Used to do it in one day but getting lazy in my old age.

For same day have to be on a 5:30 or 6 AM flight to start and hope that nothing is late or goes wrong. Miss that 1 PM checkin with Avianca and I fly all over the place anyway.

So I leave here at 10AM and I have PLENTY of time to make that 1PM checkin the next day.

We are open for business just to make it easier, here is the address again:

Starlite Hotel and Café
750 Ocean Drive
Miami Beach, FL 33139

phone and fax for café: 305-534-3073
starlitecafe at bellsouth.net

I haven't designed a voucher yet, so whoever comes by earlier just bring a copy of this post (not the whole thread) to get specials. Please incluse your PBH name on it so I know who you are. Currently I am present in the Café during business hours, but that will change fast ... it has to ... we are open 8am to 2am for now, when possible we will be open 24/7. It is hard to find reliable people willing to work.

I bought a few bottles of Aguardiente Crystal for PBH members ... any other ideas?

Cheers,
Lionheart

Nice job Thanks for sharing the information, It will be nice to have simultaneous meetings in different parts of the world, with PBH posters and from "Friends of Colombians" and colombians all over the world.

I had the pleasure to meet several participants in person from PBH, and I am glad the number of users is growing, chances are that one day some could gather in the same city even is it is for a few minutes.

webmanco We should coordinate the schedule of meetings, I know several in this area want to meet each other. I know a bit about your meeting concept.

Anybody can get the ball rolling with a suggestion for a date. The March weekends are very full now - Spring break season, most hotels close to here are sold out now.

Me too! Sounds like a great idea!!!!! I would love to stop by too! I've lived in Miami for 27 years and frequent the beaches quite often! Lionheart, would you be open to meetings or middle sized function on that terrace as well or is it strictly dining?????? Sounds like a great place to have a small, intimiate gathering (reception, etc.)... HHHMMM?????????

Lionheart says on Mar 4, 2006, 11:58:

Sure we can I could reserve like one half of the terrace once we have the planters and umbrellas in place. The terrace is then split into two halves, that gives us room for a group of about 20 people. Later in the year we will be opening inside dining, in a year we will also have roof top dining and entertainment.

I am uploading a photo of our block on Ocean Drive to my profile, the Starlite is the building on the far right.

Hey, I'm up for a long weekend visit I'm prety flexible. Besides I have not been down there to see my cousin for a while. I would finally like to meet as many of you all as possible. Friends and foes (if I have any) alike. :)

I think it would be fun. But Lionhear, as to the Aguardiente....I'll pass. Crown Royal or.......God Forbid I say this among all the Mexican haters here, but TEQUILLA (El Jimador, Hornitos, Herradura brands please) and only Reposado will do just fine. But also......some great European or Mexican beers. My favority Lionheart is...

Harleys and more Right here seems to be major biker meeting point, and many go to wet Willie's for their drinks. On some nights there are over 100 bikes lined up along the street, and the biker's are rambling around in the park across the street with their biker chicks.

I'll probably be at the bar in front most of the time, hope you can make it! Just ask for Dave ...
