Medellín - hotel advice

Hi,

I've been reading this forum for a while now, but this is my first post. So let me start off by saying Hi!

Next, I'd like to say that I'll be travelling to Medellín the first week of June, and I'd like some advice as to safe but cheap hotels where I can stay until I find an apartment. (I apologize as I'm sure this question, or very similar ones have been asked before -- I used the Google search on this site, but I found varying answers, so I figured I'd consult before making my final choice.) I have checked out the hotels on Travelocity.com and Expedia.com, but they seem to be pretty ritzy, starting at $71 and up for a night. What are centrally-located hotels that are in safe areas but less expensive? Or would I best just go with some of the ones offered on Travelocity.com?

Thanks in advance for everyone's advice!

Plaza Rosa ! Plaza Rosa is pretty nice you can also rent a smale studio over there,
you should try also to get a good deal with Hotel Park 10,

if you stay 2 weeks or longer you can get a pretty good rate.

Hotels in La 70 If you need cheap accomodations but in a safe area then don´t go to El Poblado (fancy area) or the downtown area (some hotels are in bad areas). Head to La 70, that´s an avenue in the Estadio - Laureles section of the city, there are about 5 - 7 hotels in that area and you can stay in most of them for about 30 dollars a night, if you´ve never been to Medellin before tell the taxi driver to take you to "La 70" and then tell him that "necesito un hotel en La Setenta, por el Estadio".

Hotels in Medellin I've stayed at a few hotels in Medellin and here are my thoughts:

In the Central area;

Hotel Internacional. The rooms are small but it is right on Avenida La Playa. The rate is 25,000 pesos per night.

Hotel Capitolio. Located at Carrera 49 No. 57-24. The rooms are small here too and there is no hot water. 25,000 pesos a night.

Hotel Ambassador. Cra. 50 No 54-50. The hotel has decent size rooms with hot water, a roof top pool, and sauna. Also a restaurant in the hotel. They offer a discount if you stay for 2 weeks or more. Only bad thing is the street in front of the hotel is not that safe late at night, and not all of the hotel staff are helpful. 1 night=58,000 pesos.

---------
The Hotel Befort. Calle 17 No. 40 B-300 is a excellent hotel. In a decent area and lots of extras. The staff is helpful and the price is about 199,000 a night and reduced rate if you stay longer.

The Hotel Laureles.70
This was by far the best one (decent price range)I found. It is on Circular 5a No. 70-15. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The rooms have air conditioning, and lots of extras. Good restaurant in the hotel. The price is 90,000 per night but reduced rate if you stay longer.

Thanks to all from me too I am heading down to Medellin in 11 days and this info was just what I needed. First time there for me. I needed some hotel names until I can find an apartment to stay in too.
If anyone has any suggestions about apartments, that would be helpful too. The father of my "guide" for Medellin is a taxi driver so he may know some places to check out.
Again thanks for info

Hello Everone!
This may be a bit late but thought I would post it for others.
During my stay in Medellin I found a great hotel (in nice area) for decient prices. Stayed in a two bedroom suite with living room, kitchen and two bathrooms for only about 65.00 usd a night. Great if you plan to have friends over or having the kids stay with you. They dont speak english but will do their best to help you.

treeshark2 Hi treeshark2, I am presuming this is the same person I know from Ctg that seems like a long time ago now, I posted the following information back in January, so the pricesmight have changed now:

Some business quote their prices in US dollars others in pesos.

1. Hotel Plaza Rosa

Carrera 32D No 9-17,
Zona Rosa,
El Poblado.

E-mail: info at plazarosa.com

tel 574 - 312 0005
fax 574 - 266 5252

Daily rates

Single room 107,400 pesos
Suite 142,000 pesos

This includes breakfast insurance and IVA.

Additional person charge 25,000 pesos

Nice rooms, especially the suites, at a good value hotel.

2. Hotel Dann Carlton

Cra 43A No7-50,
El Poblado.

www.danncarlton.com

E-mail: hcarlton at danncarlton.com

tel 054 - 312 7220
fax 574 - 312 7323

Daily rates

Single room 159,000 pesos
Suite 299,000 pesos

These prices are supposed to be for two people, so hopefully no extra guest fee.

These prices include breakfast but do not include IVA (7%) and insurance 1,500 pesos.

A very nice hotel.

3. Hotel Park 10

Carrera 36B No. 11-12,
El Poblado,
Medellin.

www.hotelpark10.com.co

e-mail: reservas at hotelpark10.com.co

tel 574 - 266 8811
fax 574 - 266 6165

Daily rates 200,000 pesos

Additional person charge 40,000 pesos

Breakfast included.

These prices do not include IVA (7%) and insurance 1,500 pesos.

This looks like a very nice hotel, but not as good value as the Hotel Plaza Rosa or Dan Carlton.

4. Medellin Apartments (it used to be called The Playboy Penthouse) rooms, apts & a mansion

Edficio Altos Del Parral,
Apt. 801, 1001 & 1002
Cra. 34 # 1 Sur 150,
Poblado,
Medellin.

http://www.playboy-penthouse.com/

Junior Suite $50
Suite $60
PH Suite $70
PH Master $90

All rooms include a full array of services and amenities, including breakfast, maid service, laundry, free high-speed internet and calls to USA or Canada, private pool, sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi, bar, etc. City tours, girl introductions, cell phone rentals, etc. are also available. Ask about discounts for long-term stays.

I recomend the playboy penthouse for newbies who are unsure of Medellin/Colombia, two Americans live at one of the apts and there are nearly always other foreigners there.

5. Torre Poblado apts

Edifico Torre Poblado,
Cra 42 No 9-28,
El Poblado,
Medellin.

http://www.torrepoblado.com/

Daily rates

Single room 110,000 pesos
Double room 120,000 pesos

Weekend Double room daily rates 80,000 pesos

Weekly rates

Single room 630,000 pesos
Double room 735,000 pesos

15 days

Single room 1,155,000 pesos
Double room 1,323,000 pesos

Monthly rates

Single room 1,900,000 pesos
Double room 2,250,000 pesos

These prices do not include IVA (7%) and hotel insurance of 1,500 pesos

Nice rooms at a good value.

All the accomadation above is situated in El Poblado neighbouhood of Medellin, which is the safest area of the City. They are nearly all within 5-10 mins walk of a large amount of restaurants and bars and several malls or a few minutes taxi ride to these locations will cost you 2,800 pesos.
There is cheaper accomodation to be found, but generally the neighbourhoods are not as good or safe.

One thing to note in Colombia regarding accomadtion is that it is always worth negiotating, it wil be hard to get the prices down on internet or phone, but when you are on the ground it becomes a lot easier. The only exceptions to the rule are certain times if year when there are large conventions going on like Colombian Moda in August.

There are two airports serving Medellin, the one in the City, as far as I am aware there are no international flights, just some internal ones, to get to the area of the the above accomodation will cost about 7,000 pesos.

The main airport is just outside Medellin in Rio Negro, there will be a line if taxis at the Rio Negro airport, it costs 40,000 pesos to get to El Poblado, the journey takes about 30 mins, on the way you will travel through some spectacular scenary.

Si, es Tiburon Hola Senior Hunter
Si, Estoy Tiburon. Si, been a year mate. All hell broke loose the last time I saw you. Broke up with the blond but she has been emailing for the last year so have agreed to talk to her this trip in Medellin.
I fly in from MIA on june 15th and will stay for 22 days. Maybe I can get some dance instruction this trip.
Trying to find someplace that will have hot water for showers and cable TV for when I need to hear some english. And will not get upset if I have 3 or 4 amigas visit me.
Have been wondering what happened with you and that chica from the banco. the one you sent the flowers to.
Thanks for the info.
Figured I would stay in hotel at first and visit and talk to people at other places to see what I liked. Will checkout the playboy-penthouse. Might want to try their intro service since I am still looking for that "special" chica.
Had been wondering about temperature at night. Would I need some long sleeve shirts or just take a real light jacket with me??

Hunter says on Jun 7, 2005, 08:05:

Hi treeshark Most of the hotels/apts have cable, with some English channels.

If you need a dance teacher let me know, I know several.

A long sleeve shirt or light jacket will be needed for some nights, or if you go to the higher altidues to visit some place in the mountains around Medellin.

I ditched the girl from the bank, to much hassle.

Si , I need a dance teacher. Figure that my "guido" and I will be out dancing friday and saturday nights. she will dance until the club throws us out. Would like to have some new moves before we go out.
If one of the teachers could work me in for some lessons on thursday the 16th or during the day on friday the 17th, that would be great.
I like to wear my Harley t-shirts during the day. Did not know if that would be OK in Medellin or would make me too much of a target. I want to visit all of the sights in Medellin. It was just too hot for me in Cartagena, I am really looking forward to Medellin.
Thanks again

treeshark2 You will have to arrange the lessons, I can give you some contact info, just PM me.

No problem with the T-shirts.

skinmail I stayed at Cabo de la Vela for two weeks in July 2003. We had a sinlge room and bath and kitchen and breakfast every day. Our rate was less than thirty dollars a day including the expensive items we drank from the mini fridge.

We stayed at Poblando Plaza on the next year for $70.00 per night. It was am executive suite with a desk and pretty ritzy. Fantastic breakfast and they polished my shoes for free every night...jejeje.

Medellin - Hotel Laureles and Hotel Ambassador
Hi,
I am looking for some more information on these two hotels which have been mentione on this forum:

1) Hotel Laureles 70:
Is this Hotel in El Poblado? If not how far from the Poblado area? Is there a in-room safe or lock box?

2)Hotel Ambassador:
Post by JR mentioned that the "Only bad thing is the street in front of the hotel is not that safe late at night..."
If I use a taxi and dont walk late at night, is that safe? Do they have an in-room safe?

Thanks in advance!

While we're at it... Anyone ever stay at Hotel San Lorenzo de Ana in Poblado? It's located at Cra. 39 No. 12-08 (tel: 266-7021). It's supposedly a very nice property with nice rooms and economic at COP98.000/nite.

I stayed at Torre Poblado last time down, and it was a more than decent. I liked my experience there as did my girl, but it was a bit costly by Colombian standards at COP140.000/nite including taxes.
