MEDELLIN VIOLENCE HITS HOME!!!!

Medellin violence hit home last night when my novia got mugged and beat quite severely after getting off the bus near Parque Botero after leaving her sisters house. I sent my friend Alvaro to check on her and he said they beat her pretty bad. Apparently the hit her on the head causing a 6 in gash that needed stiches and then beat her and kicked her untill she gave up her cell phone and her money. I can not comprehend how a anyone could do this to a defensless girl walking home. Don't these people have any decency at all, what a couple of low life scum. I am beyond angry, I wish I was there and the two punks who did this woud try it with me. I hope they try it with someone who breaks their scrawny necks and put them in the hospital for a very long time. There has to be a special place in hell for assholes who beat women. I wish I could hunt them down and smash their knee caps and cripple them for life then they could never do it again to an innocent girl. She is in bruised all over and in alot of pain so please keep her in your prayers.

Scooby sorry to hear about the attack on your novia, stories like this are sickening, what a couple of useless human beings to attack a woman.
A similar story happened to my ex novia in Cali, she was attacked in broad daylight at an intersection, she was on her moto with her 10 year old son on the back, two men pushed them off the moto into the intersection, when she protested they kicked her in the stomach and drove off with the moto.
No one did anything to help her and the boy and the police well the police in Cali are less than enthusiastic about doing their duty.
It seems in Colombia its everyone for themselves.

I hope she feels better soon. A couple of people commented on the "giving up" of the cell phone. I don't know what kind of money your novia has, but mine had none. The only thing of any value she owned was her beloved cell phone. So I can appreciate why your novia's reaction would be to resist.

Anyway, it must be torture for you not to be able to be there with her. Hang in there, and I hope everything works out OK.

I believe he means Botero Plaza. It is in Centro just west of the Parque Berrio metro stop. I have spent a lot of time in that area, but I always leave by 7:00 pm. There are a lot of glue sniffers and drunks in that area. The odor of urine is pervasive.

About the only relatively safe place in Centro after dark is the Avenida Junin pedestrain mall between Parque Bolivar and Exito. Parque Bolivar is not safe after dark.

I was told that the Centro was a lot worse some years ago. I personally spent something like 15 days in a cheap hotel there when I was fixing my apartment and had walks around at any time of the day and night. Never happened anything to me, but the view was not really relaxing... and made me keep my guard on everytime.

Anyway I told my wife after being eyed up by just about every person we came into eye contact with that we visit only during the day from now on. I am not the type to feel uneasy but I felt like I had a bulls eye on my head. Maybe a bad night but didn't dig it. In the day it is perfectly fine.

I think it's getting more common to steal cell phones. I have heard of several people who have been robbed of their cell phones. Cell phones seem to be pretty expensive in Medellin. I have a friend who bought one for a million pesos and I think it's easy to resell them. I've been to botero plaza at night after work before. Went to take pics of the musuem and the lights with my digital camera. Didn't seem all that bad but of course I wasn't hanging out there either. Sorry to hear about your girlfriend.

Lowell says on Sep 9, 2007, 08:41:

Very bad tragic news. I'm very sorry for you friend. I pray for her speedy recovery. It appears (but is probably not the case), that life in Colombia may be more risky for Colombians, than it is for foreigners.

For a while I worked as a criminal defense private investigator. After a couple of years I couldn't stand the work anymore. I did many a jailhouse interviews. To many violent and non-violent criminals, the public is seen as the enemy and or a target whose health or life has no value. It's a form of intense hatred. Others that were so wasted, lost all knowledge of right and wrong. That is until they are forced to sober/clean up and face their charges. All had their stupid excuses. All left victims behind, forever affected physically and or mentally.

My wife loves her cell phones (2). I believe that without thinking of the risk involved, she would resist having them taken. We hardly ever go into town at night and never anywhere near risk areas. If anything we walk to the local bakery.

Once again very sorry for your novia.

From what I understand she was hit in the head from behind with a gun then after she fell one kicked and hit her while another went through her purse and pockets. She told me she resisted because she did not want to give up the phone that I had sent her for christmas and it was special to her. I told her I can always get you another phone but there is only one you. Damn she's a fighter, and a very nice girl, I just found out that this is the third or forth time she has been mugged in different parts of Medellin. I guess there are guys that just go around looking for women (or easy prey) to prey on. Even though my novia is poor she likes to look good I guess they thought they found a rich target. They only got about 50,000cop and her cell phone.

I guess I live a sheltered life because I can not understand how a group of men can ever do anything like that to a defenseless woman its just beyond my comprehension. I forget sometimes how good I have it up here in my little mountain town in Calif. where that stuff never happens.

It was 9pm & she was heading home from her sisters house she had gotten off the bus and was waiting to transfer to another. She was talking to one of her GF on her cell when 2 teenagers came up behind her and hit her on the head from behind with a gun. She fell down and they put a hanger over her head around her kneck and tried to grab her cell phone. She held on to it so they started choking her with the hanger and hitting and kicking her. She let go of the phone and they one continued to go through her pockets and purse while the other held on to the hanger and pointed the gun around at bystanders. When they got all she had they dropped her and ran away. No one person came to her aid till after they left because they were waving the gun around.

Scooby, Scooby.... this friend Alvaro, is he a friend of hers too? How long do you know him for? Does Alvaro speak english or do you guys also communicate through a translator?

Is the translator somebody you know and trust?

Do you have a webcam? Did you ask her to get in front of the webcam so you can see how beat up she is?

Why would the guys hit her over the head.... muggers usually use knives. My mother got mugged, she fought back and the guy stabbed her hand, but I have never heard of anybody getting hit over the head.

If she has lived in Medellin all her life, she knows her tufr. Why would she be walking around alone with an expensive cellphone.. at night?

Do you have a doctor you trust in Medellin, one that you know but she doesn't? Can you flip the doctor some money to examine her and get back to you letting you know the state of her wounds?

And finally, did you send her money to buy a new cell? Did you send her $$$ for medical care to get the "wounds" looked after? Are you sending her money for medication?

Anyway, if it is not the case, just excuse Colombiche and me, but chances are always high of being treated like a marrano. What I do not like about this story:
1) Walking at night in Plaza Botero is a no no for a local.
2) She's from a lower estrato.
3) You sent a Colombian friend to check it out.
4) You use a translator.
5) They beat her up quite hard. It does not happen often at all.
6) You used to enjoy brothels and strip club and Medellin Mansion. Nothing wrong with it, but it happens that you are easy to meet some kind of persons there.

Now, all of those points taken separately are ok, but together... well, sorry again Scooby, but keep your guard always on...

strata2woman,
when you smelled and saw lots of crap, you begin to recognize it.
Sadly, a girl from a rich family would hardly have the need to try what a girl from a poor family would. That does not mean that if you are from a poor family you are automatically dishonest. Like being a prepago does not mean you are a dishonest person. I've seen prepagos genuinely falling in love and being the most honest persons in the world. Who can judge a person in needs?
What I can tell you is that 99% of the times it depends on the man and the way one can handle the relationship. Being the average man in Colombia is not the same as being the average man in US or Europe, accept it or not.
About the current story, I have been clear on my post and Robert gave some explanations as well. I would just add, that similar stories have been used in the past by people I know to get money from a gringo boyfriend. And not once.

Too much trouble just for a cellphone. Good eye CB!!

When someone got into my neigboor´s apartment, the police told me that usually those guys don use guns, "Apartamenteros".

I walked on August thru several places near downtown, went thru El Barrio Triste, Centro, Parque Botero.

On a Sunday me and my uncle listened to some street singers "Que orgulloso me siento de ser Colombiano, upon y uncle´s request.

Sad to say but sometimes people make up these stories, blowing up the bad security image of Colombia. While in Medellín I did not see danger anywhere or hear about it from other people.

Oh girl, Colombiche you need to wake up and smell the coffee! "Rich Gringo" is just a palabra compuesta. Perhaps the gringos that throw their dolaretes around you are referring to, are the ones you probably know. However, I am not here to defend the gringos, that, they can do themselves.

My answer to your post was and is, the underlying inuendo: Some gringo girlfriend is trying to fleece him, and she wants his money, [your Western Union post]. Yes, Con Artists are universal and are from any social status, however, it looks like because she is a poor girl, her mugging is suspected. If she has been a well to do girl, she probably won't be taking buses and perhaps this could have been avoided, but she's not and buses are our form of transportation. - I was shopping not too long ago at the Vivero in Buena Vista [B/quilla] and it was past 8pm and no taxi wanted to take me to my neck of the wood, so I had to take the bus loaded with stuff and take the long ride home. Was I probably more likely to be mugged, than if a taxi has taken me home? yes!

Poor women are limited to where they shop or where they hang out, violence is more prevalent in poor neighborhoods, pero aun asi, most low income women are decent human beigns and no con artists.

I take it VERY PERSONAL when anyone throws inuendos without hard core facts, only based on stereotypes.

Most of PBH people are crazy. You will never accept the fact that Colombia is dangerous. It's nothing like living in the USA. It dosn't matter about her Strata, wealth or class, I think the poor are more honorable then the rich that recieved their wealth from DRUG!!!!

This guys girl was mugged, please don't look for holes in this story. I have a question for the Gringos here, would you bring your children or grandchildren to Colombia?

Annual Drug Deaths: Tobacco: 395,000, Alcohol: 125,000, 'Legal' Drugs: 38,000, Illegal Drug Overdoses: 5,200, Marijuana: 0. Considering government subsidies of tobacco, just what is our government protecting us from in the drug war?--Ralph Nader

strata2, I think YOU need to wake up and smell the coffee!

Why do you always turn every single post into a class war? This has nothing to do with social class. It has to do with a Hollywood/Indiana Jones style robbery ... all over a "chichigua" (a cell phone)-- that makes absolutely no sense!

Anyway, I was just pointing out some stuff, I can't sit here and argue all day over it. If you guys believe the story then fine......

I would think that most Colombian girls would have the sense to give up her cell phone when being mugged by a group of people, even though it is of great sentimental value. My condolences to Scooby, this story is very melodramatic.

Strata2woman - No disrespect, but I think you'd be wise to go back and read Robi666's post with the 6 points. Several people on this site, including Colombiche, are aware of the probable circumstances surrounding this "relationship."

As Robi stated "when you smelled and saw lots of crap, you begin to recognize it."

In this particular case, I wouldn't be so sensitive with "class" issues. It's not about that. The OP's probably getting fleeced, and doesn't have a clue. He doesn't understand the culture, doesn't speak the language, yet is very defensive, rather than absorbing it.

And finally, it's not the first time she's been "robbed" this year.

If you need me to be more blunt, let me know. However, Robi's post is a great start.

People like Colombiche who have to catoragize others and put people down only so that they can feel superior to them shows their prejudice and feeling of superiority. It does not matter what background a person comes from whether they are decent people or not. Its the well off that always look down upon the poor when they themselves are the cause of the seperation of the classes. She posted "I won't tell you anymore things that you don't want to hear, keep believing what you want to believe." you just keep telling yourself that, that is why you decided to attack verbaly a decent and very good person. I really don't give a shit whether you think she is lying or not. My only regret is ever posting what happened to my dear friend thinking that it may help someone else and not happen to them. Some people only see the evil in others maybe I am naive but its my life so keep your negative crap to yourselves.

Scooby, we've offered our sincere condolences for the situation. I did not have the impression Colombiche was trying to put other people down, not at all. Rather that the description of the event is melodramatic -- I agree tragedies are often dramatic. I work in an emergency department and see a great deal of tragedy. Occasionally the most melodramatic stories are the ones where the truth has been embellished. Pointing out this unfortunate side of human nature may seem negative, but is not in itself élitist, evil, delusional, badly intentioned nor vindictive. And Colombiche certainly is none of these things. The Internet is not a trusted friend, and the advice you get in a public forum is not always unfiltered or diplomatic, as you well know. Only you know the very decent and very good person involved. Our sympathies, but keep an open mind.

Look, I don't even know why I am wasting my precious time trying to clue you in. At least you can take my suggestion and say "mmm, I'll keep than in mind" instead of getting all defensive.

You guys are seriously twisting things by making it look as though this is about class. What a feeble argument. Anybody that is familiar with my cyberpersona over the past two years knows I don't give a crap about class, colour, sexual preferences or religion. I also don't put myself on a moral pedestal. Everything I say I say flat out and I am anything but a hypocrite.

Me categorizing and judging others? As far as I can remember you are the one that spews your christian rhetoric about how gays/women who have abortions etc etc are going to burn in hell,so spare me the bullshit. I don't know where the hell people here get the idea that I am from well off family, you really have not idea about the harsh things I have endured. I have been around the block a few times, that is why I have street smarts and can spot a conartist a mile away. I am also colombian, which probably gives me a bit more insight than you have, colombians are good people, but the bad ones are very smooth and can take the socks off your feet while you have your shoes on.

Anyhow, I'm done, believe what you want to believe, you are right, mayyyyyyyyyyybbee the story is true.

Colombia is no different than the US, tons of people made their money honestly, working hard, getting an education...some others made money doing shady stuff...

I am jumping on here which I generally don't do. Anyway We all know for a fact that Scooby met her while he was searching for hookers at the Medellin Mansion. Therefore Strata2 Robi is correct in suspecting her story and he is not sterotyping but just pointing out things that raise flags. Secondly Scooby loves to talk about how he has found Jesus now and prays with his girl via telephone etc.. However then he sends Colombiche a FU email (Really Christian) and posts YESTERDAY on another PBHers Profile who was asking for information on a taxi driver to pick him at the airport.
"I talked to him yesterday and he asked me to spread the information that he is more than willing to take you on excursions to Manizales, Pereira, Armenia etc. to enhance your Colombian mongering experience." I am not as Catholic as my wife wishes I were but I don't know if my priest would think referring people help on how to "Monger" is very Chritian. Lastly but not leastly does Scooby just assume everyone on here or a majority are "Mongers"?? I mean I had seen no indication that this is what that PBHer was asking and if am correct I think this guy had an apartment previously in Medellin as well as a girlfriend and simply had to work in the USA for the last few months.

okay, I'm late to the thread but from my opinion is that the chemicals in Scooby's head are wreaking havoc and distorting his better judgement. I too call it a bullshit story in an effort to get him to Western Union. This happens all too often with gringos falling in love with a young beautiful Latin woman in a foreign country, because they think she is different than all the rest.. Lucky them,"F" everyone else who thinks different.

The only problem I see is that sometimes you have to learn things the hard way, on your own..
