Medellin versus Bogota

I am looking for some thoughts on which is a better place to live. Medellin or Bogota. I have look in here and found some info, but it doesn't tell me much.

I am an older guy so I could care less about night life and piaisas, etc. My wife is from Bogota and we want to retire to Colombia, have a kid, and live a somewhat quiet life. She has been talking about looking at Medellin because they might have better housing and more employment opportunites for her.

I know it's pretty, the people are friendly, the food is perfecto, and the women are beautiful, but what would make someone want to make thier life in Bogota versus Medellin or vis versa. Also, where is a good strata 4 or 5 area to live in Medellin?

Your thoughts?

Rikito The weather is a lot better in Medellin than Bogota for starters.

But I would suggest you visit Medellin and Bogota before deciding on anything.

I agree Oh I will visit Medellin before deciding, but for some reason I value people's reponses in here. There is a unique perspective from the kernow's to Kat to old gringo that always helps my comfort factor.

and who can decide on anything until Elmo checks in! I hope sober, not in some BAQ brothel, or marrried...to a burra.

Bueno cada quien tira por su lado, I am costeña, and although Medellin, Cartagena, barranquilla, Cali are beautiful cities have wonderful weather beautiful and people I have to said that I won't live anywhere in Colombia but Bogota. Its the best city really, in Bogota you can get anything from nacional e international food, best Universities and schools, the best airport in Colombia you can go from there anywhere in the world without too much stop-overs, you can find all kind of bars with different types of music, good theaters, cinemas, employment? more chances in Bogota, embassies, not need to paid to stay in Hotel for weeks if you come from Medallo or cali to get a visa, nice parks, do I have to keep going ah! and people from everywhere no just Bogotanos, good sport facilities and if you want a bit of suntan just pop for a weekend to villavo (nearly two hours from Bogota), Melgar or Giradot. I tried to live in Cartagena but after 2 month I was bored to death.

What do you like? Kat has a point. I’m from Medellin, went to college in Bogota. Bogota has a lot to offer. It all depends on what you like. For instance, most people believe Medellin has better weather, but I prefer Bogotá’s cooler temps. Bogotá is more cosmopolitan, cultured, sophisticated, and hip. It is also pretentious, insecure, pompous and hypocritical. We have to do lunch!Medellin is frank, relaxed, unpretentious. People take pride in their can-do attitude. There is more to do in Bogotá on weekends, comparatively little to do in Medellin (the best entertainment in Medellin is outside Medellin!). But if you are looking for a more relaxed attitude Medellin is best. I’d personally would love to spend time in Manizales; Antioquia attitude, cooler weather, less crowded. Medellin as it once was.

well.............. i think to tell you the truth cartagena, manizales, and cali are the best places to live. but if i had to chose between medellin or bogota well..............i would say it depends medellin is a big city so is bogota. but medellin is more peacefull and the climate and people are nicer. it has an airport and it has lots of international things tooo ( afterall medellin is colombias second largest city). but if you want peaceful i really suggest manizales. im costeno but i dont think youl like to live in da costa.

WTF? Even the costenos are voting for Medellin or Bogota? I think they should live in Monteria and sweat like animals 24x7 while they're choking on the dust from the traffic in the streets and being deafened by the incessant blare of music blasting, people hollering, and traffic honking. It's a dump and a chaotic mess but at least everybody can hang out in the street and talk to their neighbors.

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

I nominate Santa Marta In spite of all its problems I think Santa Marta is still a great place to live and raise a family. Just one man's opinion. I wouldn't live in Bogota with a ten foot pole.

You need to visit yourself Obviously asking a questions like that, you're going ot get everyone's opinions. LOL And like my dada always says... opinion are like a$$holes, everyone has one!!!!!!! So, my best bet would be to just hang in each place for a weeks or so and get your own opinion!!! :)

Winners have simply formed the habit of doing things losers don't like to do.......

Near Bogota There are quieter places that are within an easy commute of the city and it's attractions/employment ops. I saw some nice housing complexes in las Caleras just east, and have a cousin who lives in Mosquera with his family. It's a nice area and close enough for him to work in Bogota.

Practical differences As allready mentioned before its up to you how you will experience the athmosphere personally.

In my opinion there are some practical diffrences

The international influence in Bogota can be noticed all around. Restaurants with all foreign influence can be found easily
in Bogota aswhere it will be harder to find in Medellin. Another point of attention may be the language. In bogota with a basic
knowledge of Spanish you can feel yourself comfortable.
In Medellin it will be hard sometimes to understand the Paisa Spanish with there tipical meaning. After many years visting
its still a problem for me.
Contruccion (including buying property) may be cheaper in Medellin and specially wood is at a very reasonable price.
Cars however can be bought best in Bogota.
Traffic is a horror in Bogota but in recent years Medellin is getting full of cars aswell. To mention is El Poblado a nice neighbourhood
where a lots of foreigners arae living but a pain....moving around by car.

The surrounding, but here we come to a personal opinion, is with the antioquia villages an eyecatcher and will give you
a holiday feeling passing by in the weekends. There is a very nice surrounding near the airport but don't forget the temperatures
will be closer to Bogatas average caused of its altitude but havent seen this beauty near Bogota.

People mention the people in Antioquia are warmer or more open minded which is a fact but I can not complain of Bogota since
I think to foreigners all Colombians are very open minded including Bogotanos

Another thing is Medellin is changing very fast, only 50 years ago like a big village and last couple of yeras
one proyect to another is completing with new roads contructed meaning easiyer to entrance and maybe a concern
it will be getting real crowded very soon.

My choice 8 years ago was buying property just outside Medellin and sofar did not regret one day.

A lots of succes..

I love both cities. Medellin is nice, people are friendly, its a city with modern things and all but people still have that very informal almost province kind of attitude which is very laid back and fun. However, I love bogota, it is more international, more restaurants, more universities, more places to visit... I love the weather in bogota, yes medellin is warmer but then again bogota isnt cold at all (unless you are costeño, paisa or caleño), there is more to do on weekends...I mean villa de leyva is close, chía is close, hell even the airport is close!!!
