Medellin Sun-Wed.

Does anyone know any happening bars or clubs in Medellin that are open and somewhat happening early in the week? I understand Medellin has hot nightlife Thur-Sat but there have got to be a few places hopping the rest of the week, no? Also, is there a place near Park Llleras that has live rock/latin bands playing? Anyone have any recommendations? Thanks PBH and fellow travelers.

On Tuesday nights at Eslabon Prendido near parque del periodista they have live latin jazz, hot salsa and great dancing. There is a light cover but you can use it to buy drinks with at the end of the night/use it to square up your tab. Have fun! Sebas

Sarao has a lot of people on Tuesdays, it's a good salsa joint going towards la 80. Aside from that probably in Poblado but don't know.

if you're in poblado, in the lleras bar area.walk south two blocks from the park. then two blocks south of the body shop and right there (ask anyone) is la casa de los cinco puertos. been there at least 50 years or more. goes back when all the streets were dirt. you wont find hot latin jazz, hookers, or wild shit goin on....but you will see poblado, what it was, and for some locals, still is. only the real find their way there. check it out. been goin there over 19 years....back when some of the streets were still dirt.

Sunday Night De ja Vu, you will need to take a taxi from Poblado - gets a decent crowd.

Monday - yet to find

Tue - yet to find

Wed - Melody lounge and the next street up is a bar with good size crowd but slightly bizzare people.

morph.....i don't think centro was ever the place to be, even back 'when', when it was the place to be. yup, there used to be lots of dirt streets in poblado. they went the way of the whale. are you familiar with 'la cola del zorro'? that used to be THE most dangerous place in poblado...by far. if you decided to take it--it's a shortcut to ave. las palmas, going towards the repressa and el retiro, etc--at night, you signed your death warrant.

Melody Lounge is like a trance music (mellow) type lounge, upmarket on the street next to Poblado. For the bar that is one street up, it is sort of the alternative crwod - I would call them MODS or something in Austalia. Strange hairdo's etc.

De ja vu, cant remember the direction - u will need to ask a taxi driver, or, many of the barmaids in P lleres will know where it is.

wellm morph....i did a lot of work....i had twelve workshops, about 60 workers, and they were spread from bello to rio negro. i had to visit each, three times a week. my secretary spent her days driving and watching me eat my powdered coffee (toot). that's what kept me going, i dealt with the mfg for 2 1/2 years and was burned by the time it was finished. remember that medellin and the surrounds was a war zone then. all manner of hell and chaos going on, all the time, everywhere. it was just something one put up with...no body said anything, what's to say...55 dead last night. 26 bodies in rio medellin this a.m. same news every day. when the end of the day came, i would hang out with my friends, go to the then, three clubs in poblado...then hit a few after hours places that were in private homes in las palmas. even there, you'ld be sitting around enjoying a drink and in would walk 8-10 maybe more young guys with their chicas and all packing heat. they would immediately take over the place. i never got up and left. i figured i got nothing with these fellas and they got nothing with me...so, why not party. never a problem. hos? really not my style. i got in enough trouble with plain ole girl friends, can't remember any bar flies active in my life...well, maybe a couple back during the viet nam days in okinawa. almost lied.

Did you ever meet Pablo Escobar? How did he feel about you being the king of Poblado?

no, sir. i was outside a restaurant where he was eating (?) once...the whole parking lot was full of his espaldas and their parking lot was huge. the restaurant was owned by my then landlords, adolpho podesta and alvaro vasco...they, like most colombian associations, later parted ways. each opening his own restaurant on the lower side of ave. poblado (oriental) the original restaurant--mentioned above--was just south of poblado, across the creek, on the east side of the street.

their restaurant was bien famosa....ooof. any day of the week you'ld find the governor of antioquia, the alcalde de medellin, crime bosses and their usual onterage of espaldas.

on calle 10, on the left hand side going up--above oriental--one (i think) block above pablo's old office building (you can tell which one it is as it has an external elevator), is a panaderia, el portal. it's still great today, albiet different. i can remember sitting eating a ham and cheese croissant and drinking a cappucino royal. that's a shot of expresso coffee, steamed milk and two shots of ron medellin. i used to drink all day long...and since it was legal (Thank you president Gaviria) i would eat 'toot' during the day, as my days were about 14-16 or more hours long, running my 12 workshops, the alcohol kept my feet on the ground. note i said, "eat" it. i never liked putting anything in my nose but air. nuff said... some of my loving detractors think i speak to openly about my distractions, early on in colombia. i really don't know why...it was and still is legal to have a small quantity for personal possession;/use. i can't imagine why not, just about everybody does (OR AT LEAST DID) enjoy it as a party favor. when one goes to the parties in the fincas...what comes along with good music, good comida a la plancha, visiting with friends, riding horses, being free from the children as there's more than enough space for them to be outta your hair busying themselves with healthy wholesome activities, plenty of guaro????? rooty toot toot!! what else. i can only only speak for myself, i have fully enjoyed my esperiences in colombia, of everything. period. dw
