Medellin question

Need some advice, have been looking at property(apartment) in Panama City however before I take the plunge I would like to check out Medellin,

I have been to Bogota and really enjoyed the city, however the
climate is a little cool for my tastes.

Everytime I run into a Colombian either here in Florida or in Panama they always make a point to tell me to check out Medellin. It always goes the same way,"Bogota is nice but Medellin is beautifull and the weather is much warmer"

I am never going to retire fulltime to Panama(or possibley Colombia) but I am looking for a cosmopolitan area with a warm climate to spend a few months each year.

Your thoughts on Medellin vs Panama would be appreciated.

I'm gonna go to Medellin for the first time pretty soon. But even sight unseen, I'd be buying in Medellin. To me, Panama City's just a blight on the landscape, compared to any place in Colombia that I've seen...

Sl, you said it correctly and also becoming more crime ridden with one of the new crimes being home invasions. Asholes even shot the finger of my friends wife off as she was trying to protect him.

How're they doing now, Lowell? That experience would have me sleeping with the 12ga. at the bedside - and I never want to live that way.

Interesting takes on Panama vs Colombia, I have been traveling to Panama for 6 years for business & pleasure, it has changed for the worse, the crime has increased along with the Gringos. Most of the new highrises are being marketed exclusively to Americans(and Canadians). There are ex-pat communities in the Boquete area that are all most all Gringos.
I get the feeling that most of the people moving to Panama look at is as just a place to live cheaper than the States, most don't have an interest in blending into the local culture.
They could be in Timbuktu for all they care as long as the weather is warm and the prices are low.

I assume the ex-pat population is fairly low in Medellin, at least in terms of percentages.
If I want my neighbors to be from New Jersey I can just saty here in Florida.

You guys have convinced me to give Medellin a look, now I just have to find a good airfare from Miami.

Thanks.

So much for South American solidarity. Well you'll love them when the modern day Bolivar (Chavez) unites all of them in greater Venezuela.

He Lowell, sorry to hear about your friend's wife. My wife also got mugged last year by 2 males and 1 female, and she looks like a diehard Colombian so they were apparently watching her when she left the bank. She is very streetwise now there but I still worry about her. There is much more security in the financial/Expat region of the city. After 8pm at night people have to pass through checkpoints...locals are checked for residency, gringos/tourists only need to say hello, now it may be different and they may check all passports before proceeding by. Once i have my home there, I will not have any signs posted, but non invited (middle of the night), guests would be treated with a 2 Rottweiler dinner.
Panama City is nice with great places to wine and dine even within resturants you may used to in the states. Movies are pretty much in English and will cost $2.50 if you are a pentioner. Even travel, utilities, banking (No lines/special line for your status), healthcare etc are much cheaper if a pentioner. My wife is 34 years old and uses her ID whenever possible, she loves it but at the same time they look at her funny due to her age. We have best of both worlds in Panama (Primarily), and Colombia second, but we were forced into this due to a security issue in a certain area of Colombia. Tensions are still there but the situation has changed a little and we have gained the upper hand personally, It is all who you know hehe.

Medellin beats Panama "hands down"

I lived several years in Costa and Panama an then discovered Medellin.

I rented a home in Boquete, Panama and watched the prices sky-rocket. It was also a long trip to the Panama International airport and the medical care in David, near Boquete, wasn't that great. Boquete had nice cool weather, but not much to do compared to Medellin. The prices for Boquete real estate was very expensive. I purchased a nice apartment here in Medellin for $56,000 which would have cost me at least $250,000 in Boquete.

I found Panama City to be extremely hot an humid just like David.

You can't beat Medellin for a lower cost of living and excellent medical care.

I have been in Panama a couple of times, however, recently here in the South Florida papers (Ft Lauderdale and Miami) they are promoting retirement and the benefits of living in Panama.

Medellin - the weather is like spring in the states - year round (thus the nickname of "Eternal Spring"). There is no beach in Medellin -- however, it's very possible to get exposure to the sun since we are so far south. I was in the sun for an hour 3 weeks ago Sunday and my face was burned (and I am not real white! (grin)). Mind you I live in Ft Lauderdale..

Medellin the people are so nice - the service at the restaurants - incredible. The weekends in the mountains or down in Santa Fe -- very nice and relaxing. I was at this place in San Jeromonio and they price for the hotel and 3 meals was 75,000 pesos per person. For 2 people for 2 days and one night including a lot of beer and rum, the price total was 212,000 pesos.

I love Colombia -- however, I do miss the states after a couple of weeks.

Just giving you a hard time, from one pasty white guy to another - albeit a bronzed hued one ... judging by the avatar. (smiley face intended - don't know how to add that stuff - need lessons from Poco)
