Medellin looks like Roosevelt Field

Just got back from carrefour.. Have any of u ever been to Puerto Rico? How much longer before Colombia becomes like any other god damn strip mall in any location in the U.S. Puerto Rico lost´s it´s identity..I vowed NEVER to go back to Puerto Rico.. Even with a free ticket..I fear Colombia is heading down the same path...Pretty soon I´m gonna save myself 6 hours and 700 hundred bucks. Ill just take a ride to Roosevelt field..

Not too many people will find your comparison understandable. I can relate to the Roosevelt Field comment. I agree Medellin is changing, but isn't it good for the local economy?

Yep, but we don't want to change the look of a city to become a carbon copy of another city.

The post is an merely an observation imho. Of course it´s excellent for the local economy. However. everything has a price.. That´s why the Puerto Rican statement came in to play... They signed a deal with the devil... and lost it´s soul..

I understand and agree. Medellin is beautiful and unique.
I'm not comparing the two, but look what happened to Cancun!
It's more American than Miami!!!
Corporations control the entire area.....

I really don't think that Medellin has an identity, maybe looong time ago, but if you would go to Medellin and you would feel like you are in another country!
I could be wrong but we'll have to go there again and find out.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE MEDELLIN Last month I was given a free ticket to go anywhere in the world.. Coulda went to bahia for carnival, but instead, I came here.. This is my fifth time here..However, It is not the same like before.. It´s better in many ways.. But in the same token, I don´t want Medellin to loose it´s Idenity..That would be a heartbreak

"Puerto Rico lost´s 'its' identity.."?

Obviously you didn't spend much time in Ponce, Viejo San Juan, San German, or a lot of other places. You should have gotten away from Plaza las Americas.

Those malls are in most growing cities on the planet.

BTW, I lived in Viejo San Juan for nearly three years.

I always have a problem with the "better for the local economy" nonsense. What other problems does it cause???? Not that I feel this is the case for Medellin, rather smaller places (most locals don't really "benefit")

Hey, sloop, I don´t think I even was at plaza las americas. Actually I staid with locals. And they took me all over, arecibo, all the way down to salinas, isla de muertes.. etc. And they actually were the ones who were even more skeptical of the situation in PR then me.

It's like that in Bogota too. It seems like you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a new mall.

Actually I still find the shear amount of commercialism in South America strange.
You can spend days walking around el Centro in Cali, for example, and see shop after shop of shoes, clothes, electronics, ect... all at prices similar or higher than in NYC. I still can't figure it out, a pair of jeans or shoes are often more than a day's pay, how can there be so many for sale ?... who's buying ?

I've never spent a day's pay on a pair of shoes or jeans and I'm supposedly a "Gringo rico"... it puzzles me no end.

Colombia has been blessed with fantastic natural resources and wealth. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that an American making minimum wage here would be in the same situation here at the Scottsdale Fashion park as one there. The would be spedning a days wages on just about anything sold. Wal-mart fills the gap.

I think the Colombian are culturally brought up conservative and are afraid to show wealth because of the old(present?) danger of being held for bloody ransom.

We have a family member with many kids, all around the same age. They needed cars, they bought four identical cars so it wouldn't appear that he bought four. I don't know that it made any difference but that sort of mind set says a lot about the sociology of Colombia.

caligula, were you in Ponce, San German, or Viejo San Juan? What a shame if you missed those places, and many more.

But I must agree, plenty of shitty places on that little island.,

Do you really not know? Or are you making a point? A pair of jeans at Studio F or whatever it is called costs a MONTHS pay for my wife's mother. The way those stores stay in business is that they are not there with the intention to make a profit. Why???? If a business doesn't make a profit, but still remains open and staffed, there is another motivation for the business other than making money. It is called washing money.

If you have people that have billions of pesos obtained illegally, they eventually have to make those pesos look semi-legit. The way, without writing a 1000 page dissertation, for them to accomplish this is to start small businesses. They could care less if they make money.
