Countryside of Medellin I highly recommend taking weekend trips to nearby San Jeronimo and Santa Fe de Antioquia, located 1-2 hour scenic drive from Medellin(the road is safe and heavily guarded by military). These are quaint colonial villages where many head to on the weekends. You can stay in an old colonial building converted to a hotel with drinks and food included for a relatively cheap price.

What to do in Medellin If you´re going to be in Medellin the first week of August then you´ll have the opportunity to enjoy the Feria de las Flowers (Flower Festival), it´s the biggest festival in Medellin and one of the best "carnival" type festivals in Colombia. It takes place from October 1st until Oct. 7th when the main event takes place, the Flower Parade. There are many parades that week, also music festivals, street parties, etc.
While in Medellin don´t forget to visit the Museo de Antioquia, go to El Tesoro Mall for a nice view of the city also to the Nutibara Hill for an even better view of the city.
