Medellin Dentist

Good Morning - has anyone had experience with the dentist below in Medellin (or another recommendation)? I need to have the second half of a root canal completed (tratamientos de condutores) and want an english speaking dentist so he / she can read the technical note produced from the dentist who started it - and was recommended the below clinic.

Juan Carlos Mejia Escalante
Artica Dental Clinic
Carulla en Las Palmas, Medellin
office number 448 48 47
cell number 312 258 34 36
juancarlosmejia at une.net.co

thanks for your assistance.

So...What does a root canal in Medellin run? I just did one in the swamps of Louisiana. My insurance co pay came to about $700. I was considering flying to Medellin and having the work done there.

Juan has been my family dentist for years and is without a doubt one of the best in Colombia. Root canal from his partner ran about 220,000 pesos plus follow up work by Juan cost 300,000-350,000 total. I'm sure the rates will vary depending on the work required.

I would suspect an honest price for root canal should be had for $125USD or less,,,

The irony of it all is that the actual crown was probably manufactured in Colombia or Mexico.

LPDiver- a few years back, the ST Petersburg Times(florida) did an article just on what you wrote about as far as where Crowns are made. Many US Dentists at the time, were unaware of the fact that the US Dental Labs they were dealing with, who they were sending their plaster Impressions to after taking them, were actually sending their impressions to Mexico. In Mexico at that time, a Finished Porcelin Crown was around $10 per crown(not including precious metal price) Then the middle man in the US dental lab would increase the cost to the US Dentist by maybe 500% or better. I would suspect that even at today's increased prices, Porcelin crowns in Bogota are made for under $15 and ultimately the final price installed would be contigent upon what type(and how many grams) of Precious Metal is used in the crown. Gold is by far the best and it has to be Dental Grade, not Jewelry grade. I bought my dental grade gold(Design 91) in Buffalo NY and handcarried it to Bogota where I had my crowns made and installed. That way I controlled most aspects costwise. I suspect that most Crowns used by Colombian Dentists are in fact made in Colombia. A Caveat for the Col Dentist is to make sure she he/she trusts their Dental Lab because some unsavory Col Labs swap and subsitute a cheaper metal(copper, nickel) instead of using the Gold or Silver the Customer is in reality, paying for. Many times the Customer finds out only later, after the crown is uncomfortable and complains, that he finds out his fillings do not contain the Gold/silver he/she paid for. My Bogota Dentist informed me of this scam,,,

On Sept 17, 2008: Senator John McCain said, as he had many times before, that he believed the fundamentals of the economy were "strong."Hours later he backpedaled, explaining that he had meant that American workers were Strong.

Envigado Oral is the name of Juan David Restrepos clinic;

Artica Dental Clinic is Juan Carlos Mejias Clinic.

You can see them both (and their photos along with their staffs) at
www.medellintravelguide.com/medellin_dentists.html

Juan Davids average prices are also listed on his page.

I highly recommend both. Juan David specializes in root canals but has staff that do implants, periodontics, general dentistry, laser whitening etc.

Juan Carlos specializes in implants, restoration, aesthetics and has staff for root canals, and other dental specialties.

MiamiMike...exactly. My uncle from a prior marriage used to make a living hitting all the local dentists and mailing them off. As you stated most dental offices were unaware.

I'd prefer to deal with a dentist in Colombia but the logistics were too problematic. It would have been a break even deal.

one thing most folks discover when they have a colombian doctor or dentist. that they are really amiable...friendly. just plain nice, non condescending folks. at least that's been my experience over the last 20 years...one of my surgeons started out as my drinking/getting high buddy. i only found out from mutual friends that he was a surgeon when i needed one. his name is fabio pio. when my friends knew i needed a surgeon, they asked me why i didn't use pio, that he was a surgeon.

the relation between doctor and patient in colombia is much different than in the u.s. i had dortor buddies in colombia that would come to my bar and just hang out and drink with their wives or girl friends til all hours. GOD i love colombia.

It was a nice place and Juan Carlos seems like a good guy. He speaks good english and uses, what seems to me (as a novice) to be very modern equipment. Costs for a root canal are 320,000 pesos (and will be completed by a specialist in that area). Other general costs for comparison are:

80,000 pess - full clean / polish.
200,000 pesos for a tooth bonding (broken tooth repair).
x-rays to look for cavities 10,000 pesos ea (total of 3).

He made it clear he only uses the highest quality materials - and that I should never have used a dentist (Sonria) from the coast!!!.

I have had very good experiences with Sonria in Cartagena and in Medellín over the last 4 years. They have done 2 crowns, 2 root canals, several cavities, and many cleanings/polishings for me.
