ietk says on Apr 9, 2008, 06:52:

In Bogota is cheaper I will pay about 136.000 Pesos per day to rent a car in Budget Rental.

durito says on Apr 9, 2008, 08:37:

Yea, but was the taxi bulletproof?

I'll stick to the bus thank you. Can we limit the # of spam posts certain people make here. This links his webpage 10 times day

Hertz at MDE charges about $55/day Taxes and Fees on Orbitz.

They said I couldn't play football I was too small / They say I couldn't play basketball I wasn't tall / They say I couldn't play baseball at all / And now everyday of my life I ball.

vicshere says on Apr 9, 2008, 08:50:

yes but again bulletproof??
gringos need to travel around in bulletproof car at all times....don't people realize they are in Colombia

listo

Mononoke28 says on Apr 9, 2008, 09:06:

The mileage rental car companies give you is not enogh and then they charge you an arm and a leg for every kilometer you add to it. It's insane. If I want to go to El Peñol all I have to do is go to the Terminal del Norte and take the bus there. Is way cheaper. Shoot, even hiring a guy to take you there and paying his meals is still cheaper than renting a car. $150 per day? nah, I'll pass.

Counterintuitive to think hiring a driver, his car, and feeding him would be cheaper than DIY rental but this is part of the craziness of Colombia. Goes back to business costs and the lack of trust (due to all the fraud/abuse in the past) that can make certain things expensive and/or with tons of bureaucratic red tape. . .

And by the way, the FTA with the U.S. doesn't really address THOSE issues. . . ;)

ietk says on Apr 9, 2008, 12:21:

Hertz has unlimited miles I was thinking in renting a car to drive from Barranquilla to Bogota is about 480 US versus 1200 US if I go Avianca plus I get to show Colombia to my son and wife, just one question how safe are the roads now, my family and I used to travel a lot in the early-mid 80s all over Colombia we went every where you ask me and most likely I have been there and I miss that, and I get to take my father along, any suggestions?

RAAAY says on Apr 9, 2008, 12:40:

What does the $480 include.............??

Is that including insurance ?.............which is not optional.........and miles used.......anything less than $90 per day is a great deal here..........make sure they are quoting you for all the " extras " that are not optional.

Gas at $5 per gallon is a great deal also....

It includes the rental fees, insurance waiver and taxes I just check their website they offer free miles/kms but what I do not know if after I take the car back with 3000 Kms extra they are going to charge me after all it is Colombia, thats why I am thinking but I will make my decision when I get there and talk to someone about it.

Mononoke28 says on Apr 9, 2008, 13:47:

You should call them because when we did, they quoted us with X amount of pesos per extra kilometer. Trust me, it wasn't cheap.

..." How much a day for car and driver RAAAY? "

I just had to bring this post back to life.

On the merits of renting a car, or hiring a car and driver. Today, I hired a taxi guy with a private car, for one week. He will not use a little egg cup yellow taxi, but a larger Toyota of some sort. I saw the car today, but can't remember the name of the thing..

Anyway,he will be with two family members of mine for the week. He will meet them at the airport at the beginning of the week and drop them off at the end. Picking them up at 9 am each morning and going wherever their little hearts desire. ( within reason). We have agreed that 10pm each night will be his cut off point. A trip out to El Penol and to some of the neighbouring towns.........shopping.......restaurants.....general sight seeing...etc etc.......

Total cost per day.......100,000, gas and tolls included.

Just wait that he sees whom he has to carry around, and the price will get higher...

Are those rentals automatic or standard transmission?

Because standards suck I haven't driven one since I was 11 years old driving a tractor on my Uncle's farm.

' a la orden!'

Mononoke28 says on Apr 17, 2008, 13:23:

I'm assuming they have to be standards since an automatic will have a hard time going uphill in Medellín. Although automatics nowdays are built much better to handle hills and mountains like the ones we have here in Colorado.
