medellin and airlines

from the newspaper today, LAN starting up flights in a few weeks from Medellin six times a week to Quito and on to Lima and TACA starting in a couple of months from Medellin direct to Lima four times a week. Also the head honcho at Medellin's RioNegro airport says the airport is in talks with Spirit about the low cost airline starting up from Medellin to the States.. That would be good news.

Wait, are you saying that a plane goes from Medellin to Quito?
This is a clear violation to Ecuador, wait until Correa realizes it...

Oh Yes I agree Nails............................ Oh will be nice...Let's see what happens and if so that airbus will be a bumpy ride in with the crosswinds in MDE...but cheap I hope.....I will be Spirits best customer...well every two weeks....and no more MIA>......I bet ya Avianca will then add a FLL-MDE route to compete...

I wouldn't believe the Spirit to MDE rumors anytime soon. Sorry to burst your bubbles.

Earlier this year, the US airlines, after years of negotiations with Colombia, finally got approvals for expanded service into Colombia. Spirit was awarded FLL-BOG, JetBlue Orlando-BOG, Delta JFK-BOG, and Continental got one route also. Bogota was the only city awarded expanded service by the US DOT. It remains to be seen if there will be any changes to this agreement. We're still holding out hope for Delta routes ATL-MDE, ATL-CLO, but it's really looking like wishing thinking.

Last year, the open skies agreement was approved. But that only includes Cartagena and Barranquilla. Spirit, so far, has been the only airline to take advantage of this.

So, the Medellin and Cali talk is pretty much only wishful thinking at this point. I'm holding out hope too, but it's not looking very realistic.

it maybe wishful thinking but the main Medellin newspaper saw fit to put it in its business section saying the head of the Medellin International Airport was in talks with Spirit about a Medellin route. Clearly that will help. May be two years away but its probably inevitable.

Oh well need to deal with MIA every two weeks still and my three airlines Copa,Avianca, and American...Who every I can grab specials from...which is a battle between the three my problem is noticing that MDE-PTY flight is always full...the connection in Panama....with Copa/Aero Republica...that daily night flight out of Panama.. I think many Colombians are going to Panama alot for vacation or shopping...

I'll hold off inevitability status until that article reads "in talks with US DOT or Colombia's aviation department."

Spirit has no real power nor influence in this decision, esp. since the alloted routes have JUST been increased and locked in contractually by both national governments.
